Fan Network Webcast of DCA Prelims

Recommended Posts

I'm good with it. I have a 10/7 meg connection though.

Glad to hear it, Kevin. BTW, congratulations to the Minnesota Brass Inc. for taking 1st in Open Class Prelims! Nothing against the Bucs, they're great, but the streak has got to be broken. Finals tomorrow -- watch out!

Absolutely worth every penny, and I'd buy it again in a heartbeat. Stream was really strong with no buffering. One or two interruptions, but nothing a refresh didn't fix immediately. For what it's worth I have a FIOS connection, and streamed wirelessly from the router to my MacBook Pro, then used a Mini Display Port to HDMI video connection to my big screen HDTV and stereo out to my surround system.

The good:

Video quality was excellent. Even the multi-cam mix was well done.

Sound was excellent while the corps were performing.

Announcer was clear and easy to hear (see below)

Between corps content was good.

The stuff to improve on next time:

Please, no lower thirds or advertising while corps are performing. It looked unprofessional and obscured the performances.

Figure out how to put the announcer into the direct feed, and balance it better. He was incredibly hot compared to the corps.

And for DCA, (not a Fan Network issue): does the announcer have to jump in so fast at the end of every performance? Let the show simmer for a few more seconds. It's fine, really.

Perhaps next season, the Fan Network should consider putting out a disclaimer recommending more than just an updated Adobe Flash. Anyone with an ISP above and beyond a "dial-up" connection (like me; I have DSL) could easily assume that the web stream would be flawless. I normally can watch YouTube with no problem. I'm glad that folks with faster broadband enjoyed the show for the most part.

Yes, this was a new endeavor for DCA, but not for the Fan Network... if you've dealt with Fan Network for the past few years, you'd be very appreciative of today's broadcast. The feed never cut out, I did not once have to wait for buffering, the content between corps was excellent, and the announcer was very clear. Some of the other broadcasts have had several sound issues or the picture wasn't great, but I felt today's broadcast was a great buy and a quality product. What a wonderful thing for DCA! I really hope they keep this up.

Also...how can you not LOVE sitting on your couch with a beer and watching drum corps?!

I agree: If you can telecommute and work from home, why not save the gas money and kick back and relax with drum corps? I'm going to have to upgrade my broadband, I guess (sigh!). Of what I did see and hear, it was almost like being there at the stadium.

Is there going to be away to purchase/download the show's like DCI's fannetwork does?

Hey, like "iTunes"? Count me in if they do that! Would love to download at least 5 of the performances.

I don't think the buffering, cutting in and out had anything to do with the broadcast but rather the end-user. I was streaming via wifi to a crummy hotel in Europe to an old laptop and managed it without any interruptions or buffering. The high cam was blurry and/or fuzzy. The sound was excellent. The ads mid-performance were annoying ... I already paid to watch. The static DCA screen was annoying. Maybe use it during breaks but not between performances. Other than that, I would have liked to see/hear commentary between performances. Get a couple of experts up in the box talking about pros/cons, history of the corps, show concept/design whatever to fill the time between performances.

Yeah, next year (assuming I don't go to Annapolis in 2012) I'll have to upgrade my broadband. That will help. I really did not run into major trouble with the buffering until the Caballeros began their show. No, I'm not blaming the Cabs (LOL). I'll be checking YouTube for shows I missed, and I promise not to download any of them!

In Djibouti my server is not very great, the sound was good but it froze a lot, I think that it was mostly my connection though. Unfortunatly I have been very busy at work and fell asleep right before the Kilties 2 Am my time. I woke up to catch the end of MBI. I think it was worth th $20 to keep track of the activity from 7,000 miles away. Next year I will probasbly be at Annapolis. If I do that it will be two years in a row watching it from a Navy base.

Interesting point...

The stream will be available at least 72 hours - probably somewhat longer...

All the performers can go home and watch themselves on www.dcacorps.org

Tom

Forgot to mention our first live WebCast (thought of it after reading Andys post).
