While program design plans are underway to propel the Jersey Surf to new competitive heights on the 2012 DCI Tour with its exciting Bridgemania production, intensive logistical planning has also begun, intended to expand the corps' travel schedule to include the DCI Southwestern Regional Championship in San Antonio, TX next July.

"It has long been our dream to provide our members with the opportunity to perform before one of the most enthusiastic and knowledgeable audiences on the DCI Tour at the Alamodome in San Antonio," said Bob Jacobs, Executive Director of the Jersey Surf. "We've had a number of discussions over the past several seasons with our student leadership and corps administration pertaining to further expansion of our tour, and we are excited at the prospect of taking this next growth step, by hopefully adding the Southwestern Regional Championship to our itinerary, along with our regular visits to the Southeastern Championship in Atlanta and Eastern Classic in Allentown. We will have considerable work to do to manage the logistics of this expansion, and of course ensuring that we have adequate funds in place to offset the additional expense, but our intent is to bring our Bridgemania production to a new audience in Texas and the deep south, and to "Share the Love" with tens of thousands of new friends that we've yet to meet!"

Although the official Drum Corps International Tour calendar isn't scheduled to be released yet, some of the rough details of the Jersey Surf's 2012 Tour are starting to take shape. The following dates are subject to change and will be finalized and confirmed later this fall.

2012 Jersey Surf Proposed Tour At-a-Glance:

June 15 – Spring Training Begins

June 23 – Jersey Surf's First Tour Begins

July 08 – Friends and Family Day, Alumni Reunion Barbeque, End of First Tour

July 13 – Jersey Surf's Second Tour Begins

Aug 09 – DCI Prelims, Indianapolis

Aug 10 – DCI Semifinals, Indianapolis

Aug 11 – DCI World Championship Finals, Indianapolis

Aug 12 – Return Home from Second Tour

"When we founded the Jersey Surf in 1990, our goal was to provide an alternative to a full-time touring commitment, to make it possible for corps members to participate without having to entirely forgo summer employment, additional classwork or vacation time," Jacobs said. "In our extensive surveys of members over the past several seasons, however, we've learned that those seeking a World Class drum corps experience have a desire and even an expectation to be a part of major events like the San Antonio regional, and they want to spend more time on tour together. We seem to be doing our job of instilling in our members a love of performance, and a tremendous appreciation of the entire touring drum corps experience. It seems logical, then, that we'd want to continue to enhance their experience by creating additional performance opportunities such as traveling through the southern United States and to Texas."

Spring Training A Competitive Challenge

"With some corps moving in for their spring training sessions in mid-May, we know that we have to be smart about our time management, as we only 'move-in' together for about a week in June," added Jacobs. "The schools in our area of the country are often among the last to dismiss their students for summer vacation, and we've had several instances in the past few years where the corps performed in its first competitive event without a full complement of performers, as some were still finishing up classes, participating in commencement exercises, etc. We don't want our members to miss their final days of high school or college classes in the name of drum corps, and we will continue to honor our commitment to supporting the students and their families in the successful completion of their scholastic responsibilities prior to jumping on board with us."

Corps members involved in the planning process are excited about the possibilities of expanding the tour to include the San Antonio regional and the southern US.

"We're digging the fact that we're going to have more touring, but still have a break between the two tours," said Jersey Surf's 2012 Drum Major. "Having a few days off between tours enables us to refocus, maybe deal with college paperwork or other things like that, and enjoy a few days of down time at the beach before hitting it hard for the final push to the World Championships. It's like having a full tour with four free days in a row right in the middle of it, and I think that is going to be a great thing for all of us. Many of us are ready to get going now!"

The Jersey Surf's complete tour plan will be unveiled at the 2012 Kickoff Weekend, slated for November 18-20 at the Camden County Technical School on Cross Keys Road in Sicklerville, NJ.

It's funny to see a corps using the terms "first tour" and "second tour". Haven't seen those one for a while.

a very good next step for Surf.

I think that extra week will help them on and off the field a lot.

The biggest thing holding Surf back is how little time they spend together compared to the rest of World Class. More time on tour will help.
