Carolina Crown 2012

Recommended Posts

I think it is fair to say that there are two major ideologies here. First, there are those that want to experience a good show (e.g., spectators), and there are some fans that, regardless of the setbacks, will overlook many of the difficultes or limitations of a show design. IMHO it is easy to be a fan, because we do not sacrifice the time, energy, or finances into marching a season of drum corps with a top five contender. Second, there are the members, who should expect to win a world championship. The guard, percussion, and the marchers should be disappointed over the last couple of years. Their disappointment should be in those staff members that cannot get them to a championship. I am now a fan of the activity rather than a current marching member. It would be easy for me to say, because of my current place as a fan, that I just want Crown to put on a great show and entertain me, but it has got to be hard to be a current member with great talent and put yourself under some leadership that does not seem to have what it takes to win a championship. Crown has been missing this type of staff for the last few years. I know that Crown will be impressive, but can they win? Only if they have the staff that knows how to win because they do not and have not lacked the talent in a long time. As a fan, it is not as important to me if they win. If I were a current member with a good amount of talent, thought, I would consider going to a corps with a proven history of winning and entertaining. As much as the fan does not like to here this, DCI is a competitive activity and the goal is not just entertainment. It is a lot about winning. I hope the changes Crown has made in staff will bring a win for them. Not just in brass, but as a whole organization. I also hope that they are as entertaining as we all know they can be. Only time, however, will tell if Crown can balance these two fundamental aspects of the activity.

As a current member of Crown, I respect your opinion. I know many people who view the activity in this way, and I understand it completely! Why pay $3,000 to get your ### kicked for 3 months when you don't win? And why go back?

Marching at Crown has allowed me to make some of my best friends. It's given me amazing experience, because the people there have made me push myself harder than I ever have. Sure, I could audition at the Blue Devils and, if I were to make it, probably win a ring. But I just don't like the way BD does things. I'm not disappointed in the staff at all. I couldn't ask for a better staff to learn from! I was heartbroken when I heard that Andrew Ebert left, despite only have marched one summer. But this new staff is equally awesome. That's why I love Crown; because no matter how bad the decision seems at first, the people who run this place like Kevin Smith and Jim Coates always have my safety and fun in mind.

Corbin,

Not everyone is as competitive as you. This is my second year marching with Crown. Even if I thought the staff didn't have what it takes to get us a championship, I would still march there again and again because I have fun there, and have made some lifelong friends. I almost feel sorry for you. You probably spent your marching years worrying about winning a stupid ring no one cares about. I don't remember who won finals in 2008, but I sure as hell remember how the different corps made me feel and who won to me. And if you are still young enough to march, please stop bashing staff members and saying they don't have what it takes. They are very experienced people who probably know more than you. Look at Star of Indiana '93. Look at Crown '07 and '09. Enough said. Those members deserved to be placed higher than they did, but I doubt it matters to them because EVERYONE knows they were amazing, ring or not.

And who are you.

To corpsband,

I have very little certainty, only opinions, which is what a lot of DCP is all about. I never have doubted that some of the staff were responsible for Crown becoming better. They just couldn't lean them to a winning a championship.

To MyShilohMy,

What you have describe is true of most people's experiences who march with a particular corps. Crown is not special in this regard. To prove this point, all you need to do is listen to the people's experiences who march Spirit, Crossmen, Boston, Bluecoats, Blue Knights, etc. You are saying, very forcefully IMHO, that drum corps is more than competition, but competition is a major part of the activity. Why do people seem to pretend it isn't? I will not stop critiquing staff as long as they get paid for doing a job, but will very rarely if every critique members. I have no hatred of any staff, but to unrealistically say that there are some staff that are not better than others is just plain wrong. I am open to critique for my opinions and have taken and will take heat. By the way, I am sure the winners of the rings in 2008 remember who they were, they experience they had, and the friends they made, as you do with Crown and so would you. And most likely you would get a ring if Crown won a championship.

And I totally understand what you're saying. But look at the Cadets. There's not a better team in DCI than Sacktig/Bocook. Why don't they win every season?

Maybe it's just REALLY HARD to write a winning show even if you have all the right staff there and the right talent in the membership.

In fact you can have ALL the pieces but someone else might find BETTER music and a BETTER concept and you'd still lose.

I just don't think 2nd - 4th - 4th is really a sound basis to say the current staff can't lead them to a championship. Maybe if it was 2nd - 8th - 12th I'd be more sympathetic to your point of view.

That is what I sincerely respect about you corpsband. You read carefully and respond in a respectful manner and at least try to understand my perspective.

Thank you for a good critique of my perspective. It is good to disagree and be respectful isn't it, corpsband?

I only point you out because of the forceful response you gave to my opinion. Myshilohmy, your response above is really a non-response to the perspective I offered.

I think we both feel exactly the same way in terms being frustrated by recent Crown's placements.

Maybe 2012 will be the year! It's MORE than overdue :-)
