Here's a video of DCI's fastest drummer this year. First time he gets very close to the record, and second time he breaks it.

I can't figure out how to embed it, sorry! I wrapped it in the [ media] tag, but it's not showing up. Anyone?

Thank you for catching that on video many people have been asking if someone got it on tape.

Can't believe Greg dropped his stick and still beat it!

Why? I'm not trying to be mean. Honestly, why? If you commit to marching corps, your focus should be on the corps. Any practice time you have should be used on the instrument you're marching that summer. It is, after all, the DCI I&E Competition. Trumpet, tuba, snare, flag... even singing are all part of DCI. Woodwinds are not.

If the purpose of DCI is to only bolster the skills of music majors, stop marching, allow all instruments, and spend all summer performing amazing sit-down concerts. If the objective of DCI is to provide a specialized, unique experience... leave it as is.

But your daughter is following in good footsteps (if I'm remembering all of this correctly): Diane Wyant was/is an oboe player, marched soprano with the Blue Devils, yet went on to become an oboist in a symphony orchestra, an outstanding band director, AND an outstanding DCI judge.

This attitude is so, so sad. There's absolutely no reason NOT to allow woodwind playing marching members to have an outlet at I&E. It has no affect on the on-field product, and since all of the music judges are fully qualified to evaluate woodwinds, why the heck not? It's not like there's no room on the schedule, especially since it's been moved to mid-season.

Clearly DCI was above board when they added the classification for woodwinds several years ago. The slippery slope fallacy never came to pass. The anti-woodwinds rhetoric with regards to I&E always was, and still is, complete nonsense.

Whether true or not, I interpreted DCI's inclusion of woodwinds in I&E events as a push towards getting people to accept woodwinds on the field. Whether true or not, I interpret small participation in I&E woodwind events as a referendum on DCI incorporating woodwinds in the future.

To be snarky..... Are you also afraid that by having vocals at I&E that will lead to singing and voice overs too?

Singing and voice-overs were already IN DCI before they were added to I&E. That is the key. Woodwinds were/are not.

I&E is a DCI event. It should feature DCI elements. Woodwinds are NOT elements of DCI. Nor should they be. This I believe.

Red score me all you want, this is how I view drum corps. It's a free country, you can feel otherwise. But someone asked me why, so I'm explaining my view.

I think it's great to allow woodwinds at I & E. Many of these kids play horns in the summer and winds in the fall, my daughter included. It's a fun day and a nice break from the grind of field competition. I don't think it's meant to be super serious (as some of the tongue in cheek performances of the past would attest). I'm all for it!

But I&E isn't drum corps, and never has been. Heck, there's no visual element, and even if you include some, it's not scored. It's a competition based simply on how you play as a individual or part of a small group. All I&E is, and has been, is an outlet for performers to just go play.

The rules have always been "ahead" of what's on the field. Any key instruments, electronics, vocals, you name it. Adding woodwinds, what...five years ago? has had no bearing on the field or on drum corps as an activity. None at all.

So let's have I&E competitions for dancing (various disciplines), juggling, fitness, violin, guitar, stand-up comedy, etc.

I&E *IS* Drum Corps. It is set up and run by Drum Corps International. It is judged by drum corps judges. Maybe I'm just a stickler for order and structure, but I don't see the point in allowing this, that, and the other thing just because "we can". Why focus on things that have NOTHING to do with drum corps during an event that (IMO) is supposed to be focusing individual drum corps skills?

Serious question. Have you ever performed at I&E?

For the record, I have.

Come on, don't pull out that tired, ad hominem elitist card.

No, I have never performed at I&E. Or DCI. Or DCA. Or BOA. I've also never been to the moon or played in the NFL, either, but I can still talk respectfully and intelligently about those subjects.
