chasgroh
Y'all might reconsider wanting DCI to be like gymnastics when you remember that in gymnastics, your score is in large part determined by the official "difficulty" of what you did -- as in, a person whose routine is officially set at a 16.5 will automatically beat a person whose routine is a 15.0 if they both give perfect performances. This means standardizing routines and giving them difficulty scores beforehand. Given how much we all already disagree about difficulty, I'd say that bringing that to DCI would be like opening the Hellmouth except with no Buffy to save us with her girlpowers and fierce weapons. No thanks. ...compulsories would be a great, and fair, addition to the competitive structure of our sport/art. Impractical, though, at least the way the touring model is set-up...time and money rule. wesleyrp
Plus, as we found out in the olympics last week, in Gymnastics if you don't like your score and placement after it was announced to the performers and audience, you can file an immediate appeal to the judges, and the judges can ( and do ) throw out the previous score and placement and give a new one. HOPPIE-" Cadets brought Xmas spirit to the world... In August.... No stinking dada or common man or off with your head opera should beat us...." skywhopper
We essentially do have compulsories. Every top corps has a triple-tonguing section, a high velocity run section, certain battery skills, certain visual skills. It's not laid down in the rules but it's de facto a part of fielding a finals-competitive program even if they evolve organically over time. But this is in fact a major complaint among the folks who are disappointed with BD's shows for the last few years: that they score well by chaining together a bunch of technical skills without necessarily presenting a coherent program overall.
cgmomma
Reacted to it when it happened, but re-watching semi's I was just reminded of how tacky it was that Dan Potter thought it appropriate to conduct the only on-field interview of a drum major just coming down from the podium after Friday night's performance with the Crossmen drum major as the Blue Stars were taking the field. It's as if the decision had already been made. He couldn't do that interview after both sets of scores were announced? I'm sure the drum major would have been thrilled to accommodate. Really DCI????
