Oregon Crusaders 2013

So what does it mean to be World Class? They still are playing an incomplete show for their Northwest shows, then taking two weeks off for more rehearsals before resuming tour in San Antonio. It's the same thing they did last year as Open Class. Why aren't they putting a full show on the field when they start, and touring completely through the summer?

It's a Northwest problem, not a Open Class/World Class thing. The last day of finals at University of Oregon is June 14. High schools and the other universities end around the same time. California corps are in all-days three weeks before that. If you're a Blue Devils horn player you have a head start of over 30 days.

If only the Southerners and the Soybean farmers would realize this, there might be many more New Englander, Californian, Northwesterner, and Northeasterner high school kids involved in competitive drum corps rather than the season already being well underway before they even get out of school. Remember when DCI championships weren't even until the third Saturday in August and these kids still had several weeks to go home, enjoy their homeboy friends, hit the beach and/or work before school began again, the day AFTER Labor Day. Ah Americana lost.

So is there a photo or vid somewhere of Oregon Crusaders' new uniforms? Haven't seen it on the new duds thread either.

It's much like Little League today, done before school's let out so that the travel teams can do their eliminations on the way to Williamsport. The rest of the summer for most goes on and on....

Now drum corps is about money. Money (scholarships) for the college members who race from Finals week even when moved earlier, to make their mandatory band camps for football band.

Money for the instructors and designers who are already compromising their presence to the drum corps with one foot in the marching band season (writing drills while on tour, skipping time with the corps to go do a band camp or meeting with the Fall crowd paying them), and monies for the housing of drum corps as schools become less and less available to touring groups.

When did the change happen? According to CorpsReps, for instance, in 1980, the first junior drum corps competitions were June 7 in New Jersey and Wisconsin, while the last ones were August 16 in Boston and Chicago.

2) Percussion Naut Pats 69.05

3) Tri City Columbians 60.88

4) Sentinels 59.80

5) Titans 56.65

6) Shamrocks 52.40

7) Seattle Cascades 45.00

8) Black Watch 37.80

The same year of DCI, 1972, 17 Drum Corps from the Northwest Competed in SEPTEMBER ( 9/2/72 ) for the Northwest DCI Championships in Spokane , Washington. DCI ends their season on August 10th this year. In the first year of DCI, there were 17 competitions on or after August 10th nationally. The Drum Corps season for most nationalDrum Corps Corps used to run from Mid May to Labor Day weekend or the weekend after Labor Day in a few cases. Going back further, even before DCI, some Corps ( including those from the Oregon, Washington regions ) competed into late Sept. and even into October in a couple of instances for the national VFW, or American Legion National Championships.
