flammaster
I went to see my son perform at his first halftime show and I am surprised I didn't get in a fight telling people to shut up.
perc2100
In Southern CA bands are only supposed to play after a play is whistled dead, and stop playing when the offense goes out of the huddle. These rules are spelled out in the athletic handbook, and depending on whether or not the home team is doing well those rules may or may not be followed. They're a good guideline, and we stick to 'em for the most part, but if the home team is struggling the Athletic Director of coaches get grumpy and remind the band of the rules. Yea but when the band is playing the fans are super rude to the band and talk all though the show here.
NewSkool
Yea but when the band is playing the fans are super rude to the band and talk all though the show here. That's everywhere. It's a football crowd. Some crowds are more supportive than others, but there will always be noise. Always. My band knows to treat halftime like what it is: A dress run. You want silent stands, go to a contest.
Michael Boo
Yea but when the band is playing the fans are super rude to the band and talk all though the show here. In fairness to the football fans, though, I'm guessing that when a band does its competition show, it's kind of challenging for such an audience to relate to John Adams, Hindemith, Hovhaness and some random requiem written to commemorate the death of whomever. PS: It comes down to knowing one's audience. Granted, it's difficult for bands to do a field show and something different for halftimes to which the fans in the stands at a football game can relate. There's only so much time. Edited October 1, 2013 by Michael Boo
