Drum Corps Map and Daily Rundown

Recommended Posts

So almost 3.5 pts gap between 7th & 8th, and 2 pts gap between 14th & 15th. But less than a 3 pts spread between 8th and 14th spot. Hold onto your hats its gonna be a wild ride.

Mandarins in a sweet spot right now. I assume this is the highest they've ever been positioned, but all it takes is a couple of shows with little or no progression and they'd be at the bottom of that grouping. Each of the corps in that group will still be fighting for spots likely clear up until Indy.

July 2, 2018 vs. July 3, 2017

2018

River City Rhythm put up the largest increase (3.90) leading to the largest improvement in ranking (5 spots to #28). Colts (2.30), The Cadets (2.20), and Colt Cadets (2.00) also had 2+ point increases. 7th Regiment decreased the most (-0.60).

Last Night's Storylines:

  • Carolina Crown slightly increased its lead over Boston Crusaders from 1.100 to 1.250.

Tonight's Storylines:

  • The Cadets closed the gap to Boston Crusaders to its smallest margin of the season at 1.700 points. Will it narrow further or will Boston reestablish its lead?
  • Although Phantom Regiment increased its lead in the last match-up, can Crossmen draw within striking distance of its first victory since July 31, 2001.

2017

Four corps put up score increases over 2.00: Colt Cadets (4.00), Legends (4.20), Pioneer (5.70), & Music City (7.00). Spartans and River City Rhythm debuted in 26th and 30th places respectively.

The score increases in Clifton were lowest with the 7 lowest increases (or greatest decreases) coming from that one show. There were several big changes in placement: Music City (#26 to #19), Jersey Surf ( #22 to #28), Pioneer (#28 to #23), 7th Regiment (#25 to #29), Legends (#27 to #23).

Only one show tonight - most of the corps from the Clifton show so we'll see if the scores stay stable or if they come up more in line with the other shows' increases from the 3rd.

Comparison

The high score this year is 2.10 points higher than the same time last year. The 80 mark was not broken until July 8, 2017.

July 3, 2018 vs. July 4, 2017

2018

Spartans led the way in terms of increased score (2.90) followed by The Cavaliers (2.50) and 7th Regiment (2.30). The only corps to decrease in score was Colt Cadets (-1.20). The Boston Crusaders jumped to the second highest score on the season although three top corps were not in action so it will take a few days to determine whether Boston is in the hunt for a medal.

Last Night's Storylines:

  • The Cadets closed the gap to Boston Crusaders to its smallest margin of the season at 1.700 points. Will it narrow further or will Boston reestablish its lead? Boston extended its lead to 2.20 and closed the gap with Bluecoats to its smallest margin of the season at 1.600 points.
  • Although Phantom Regiment increased its lead in the last match-up, can Crossmen draw within striking distance of its first victory since July 31, 2001. Crossmen reduced the gap to only 0.400.

There are no shows today.

2017

There was only one show today. Only one corps increased by over 2.00 points: Jersey Surf (2.30). Spirit of Atlanta's score decreased by 1.50. Jersey Surf and The Cadets each gained three spots in the rankings from #28 to #25 and #6 to #3 respectively. There's only one show on July 5 as well with only three corps scheduled to compete: The Academy, Phantom Regiment, and Santa Clara Vanguard.

July 4, 2018 vs. July 5, 2017

2018

There were no shows today.

Tonight's Storylines:

  • The corps with the three highest scores are all in head-to-head competition tonight. Will Boston Crusaders most recent score hold when seeing Bluecoats and Carolina Crown in the same show?
  • Shadow makes its season debut.

2017

There was only one show with three corps. Phantom Regiment was the only corps to go up in score (0.70). The Academy and Santa Clara Vanguard dropped from yesterday, the show at which Phantom Regiment did not perform after the accident. By virtue of Santa Clara Vanguard's decrease, The Cavaliers moved up to #5.

Only one show again tomorrow. Most notable question - can the Madison Scouts improve on its last head-to-head match-up with Blue Stars? In that show on 7/2, Madison Scouts were only 0.300 behind the Blue Stars, the closest margin of the season.

July 5, 2018 vs. July 6, 2017

2018

Blue Stars and Colts led the way in terms of increased score at 2.65 and 2.60 respectively. These score increases matched each corps coming out on top for the first time of the season over a nearby rival - Phantom Regiment and Madison Scouts respectively. Corps on the East Coast saw much more modest score increases or decreases with The Cadets falling furthest (-0.40).

Last Night's Storylines:

  • The corps with the three highest scores are all in head-to-head competition tonight. Will Boston Crusaders most recent score hold when seeing Bluecoats and Carolina Crown in the same show? Among these three corps, the ranking was reestablished with Bluecoats then Carolina Crown then Boston Crusaders.
  • Colts defeated Madison Scouts for the first time since 2009.
  • Shadow makes its season debut at #34.

2017

Shadow made its season debut at #34. Madison Scouts continue to stay very close to Blue Stars. No significant placement changes or real surprises here.

Attention can turn to July 7 when the remaining two World Class corps and two additional Open Class corps make their debuts and we'll have lots of corps in action. The Cavaliers and The Cadets will be head to head for the first time since the season premiere on June 22. Bluecoats and Santa Clara Vanguard will be head to head for the first time. The Academy and Troopers will also be head to head for the first time.

July 6, 2018 vs. July 7, 2017

2018

Bluecoats top score held even with the corps not in action. Several corps made their season debuts: Oregon Crusaders at #18, Cascades at #23, Columbians at #28, The Battalion at #29, and Legends at #31. Vanguard Cadets returned from nearly two weeks out of competition with a huge score increase of 9.30, which not only moved the corps up five spots overall but also moved the corps ahead of Blue Devils B for the first time this season. Blue Devils B (6.05) and Blue Devils C (5.00) put up the next biggest score increases after the same time off as Vanguard Cadets. With no days off, Phantom Regiment had a large increase (2.35) once again opening up the spread with Crossmen. The remaining two 2+ point increases went to The Cavaliers (2.20) and Santa Clara Vanguard (2.10). Each returned after a few rehearsal days to return to the top 3.

Tonight's Storylines:

  • The top story has to be Blue Devils and The Cavaliers matching up head-to-head for the first time this season. The last time both corps were in competition on the same day (July 1), Blue Devils were 1.20 points ahead. The last time The Cavaliers beat Blue Devils was July 23, 2011.
  • Jersey Surf makes its season debut.

2017

Oregon Crusaders and Cascades made their season debuts at #19 and #20 respectively. All World Class corps have now had at least one show.

In Open Class, The Battalion and Columbians competed for the first time. They stand at #29 and #31 respectively. Both corps are doing one week of competitive touring with final competitions scheduled for July 15.

Notable answers we got from July 7 shows:

  • In head to head competition for the first time since the season premiere on June 22, The Cavaliers edged The Cadets by 0.20 points. This is a tighter margin that the corps' last meeting when The Cavaliers led by 1.850. The two corps will compete head to head at least once every three days for the rest of the season.
  • Meeting for the first time this season, Bluecoats bested Santa Clara Vanguard by 0.70. They will be back in head to head competition on July 8.
  • The Academy come out on top in head to head competition with Troopers for the first time with a margin of 1.60 points.

Out on their own in terms of the top 6, Blue Devils came back to competition after four full rehearsal days with a 3.85 point increase moving them from #4 to #1. Blue Devils and Bluecoats face off for the first time in one week on July 15 in Denver. Santa Clara Vanguard also increased by more than 3 points (3.30), good for a move from #6 to #4. The only corps to decrease in score was Pioneer (-1.00), which fell from #24 to #28.

Comparison

Just like this time last year, the top three scores come from three different shows, making the anticipation for regionals all the more intense.

Not a real scientific conclusion, but sure seems like the scores are a notch higher @ same/similar placement.  Anyone know why?  Everyone just a notch better this year?

July 7, 2018 vs. July 8, 2017

2018

As expected, Blue Devils returned to competition for the first time since July 2 with the largest score increase (3.00) and a return to the medal rankings albeit #3 behind the now-tied Bluecoats and Santa Clara Vanguard who are a full point ahead of Blue Devils in non-head-to-head competition. Bluecoats remain the only undefeated corps and they will not match up with Santa Clara Vanguard until July 17. There were several other corps with 2+ point increases: Legends (2.80), The Battalion (2.60), Shadow (2.45), The Academy (2.15), River City Rhythm (2.10), and Troopers (2.00). Several corps saw score decreases with Oregon Crusaders (-1.00) falling the furthest.

This date represents the most World Class corps in competition on one date so far this season with only Mandarins and Pioneer off.  Blue Stars defeated Crossmen for the first time on the season with a strong 1.100 margin after previously trailing by 0.250, 0.250, and 0.100. Colts margin over Madison Scouts is now razor thin at just 0.050 with a week before the two corps see each other again.

Last Night's Storylines:

  • The top story has to be Blue Devils and The Cavaliers matching up head-to-head for the first time this season. The last time both corps were in competition on the same day (July 1), Blue Devils were 1.20 points ahead. The last time The Cavaliers beat Blue Devils was July 23, 2011. Blue Devils defeated The Cavaliers by a solid 1.60 margin.
  • Jersey Surf makes its season debut at #27.

Tonight's Storylines:

  • The most interesting set of match-ups are in Orlando where Bluecoats (#1), Carolina Crown (#4), Boston Crusaders (#5), and The Cadets (#7) are all head-to-head. Within this group, Boston Crusaders moved to within 0.450 points of Carolina Crown last night. The last time Boston Crusaders beat Carolina Crown was July 19, 2006.
  • Can Crossmen retake its lead over Blue Stars?
  • Heat Wave makes its season debut.

2017

Heat Wave made its season debut at #36.

Corps in the Sacramento show put up big score increases ranging from 2.700 (Pacific Crest) to 8.100 (Blue Devils B). None of the corps had competed since at least July 2 with a few going back to June 25. Outside of that, The Cavaliers saw the biggest short-term jump, going up 2.950 points night over night. Six corps saw their scores go down, all but one of those corps in the Minnesota show. Pioneer had the largest decline (-1.675). On the placement side, most corps saw a change in ranking. The largest improvements in position went to Vanguard Cadets (#26 to #20) and Watchmen (#35 to #29) while the largest decrease went to Pioneer (#28 to #33).

All of that aside, the biggest story of the night is that Santa Clara Vanguard beat Bluecoats head to head, leaving only Blue Devils on the undefeated list. Each corps has taken one of the matchups. They will not see each other again until July 18 in Broken Arrow. The last time Santa Clara Vanguard defeated Bluecoats head to head was on July 14, 2014.

Comparison

Coincidentally, there was a tie at the top last year as well with Blue Devils and Carolina Crown both scoring 81.900; this year we have Bluecoats and Santa Clara Vanguard both scoring 82.700. Two years - four different corps in the first place spot on this date.
