Evans vs Remo

evans is bass drum heads for dummies. if you don't want to put in the time and effort to make a drum sound good, take 2 minutes with an evans and it will sound decent. in my opinion, a remo head sounds much better when the person tuning the drums knows what they're doing. as far as snare heads go, i hate the evans heads. i don't think they feel as nice as a remo head, and i think the yellow head looks like crap. not that looks are as important as the overall sound, just stating what i think. white max is the way to go, now adays you can even get a whitemax and have it be a black color, but it's still a white max head. i used all evans at my high school and all remo at drum corps, so i saw and played on both kinds within a few days of each other, and i'd have to say that remo is the best. you're gonna have problems with heads pulling and stuff with any company, but remo is the most consistent and the best sound.

I don't have a huge beef with Evans Bass heads. They sound fine imo, but as far as snare heads go, I'm all about the Black Max. It is possibly the best head in the history of the world. I teched a line that used evans snare heads, and I wasn't pleased with the sound. It wasn't terrible, but It just couldn't compare with Remo.

BlackMax came out before WhiteMax did.

i realize that, but i wasn't talking about black max. white max and black max have more differences than just their color. there's different materials in the heads themselves. and i like the white max better. what i meant is that you can get a white max head, but have it be a black color. it's different than a black max.

Okay. That's not what remo says...

Remo's WhiteMax and BlackMax are the exact same heads...same materials. The only differences are that the WhiteMax have a very thin ply of white mylar covering the black fibers. With the BlackMax it is a very thin ply of clear mylar cover the black fibers. Exact same heads, same materials, same manufactering practices.

WhiteMax do tend to be quite a bit brighter than the BlackMax when listening to a whole snare line. Not much of a difference up close to just one snare.

i've tried out remo blackmax heads, whitemax, tendura, evans mx white, evans mx7 gold, evans mx5 and evans hybrids.

ive got to say out of personal opinion, the evans hybrid snare top and bottom sound greatest. a nice crisp snare sound without ring, and gives a good cushiony rebound even when you crank the #### out of them.

as far as bass and tenor head, the line i play on uses evans bass heads. i find that the evans head isn't consistant with each drum. we tried them on pearls, dynasties, and yamahas. so it really matters what bass drum your using, as well as the head.
