George82
Huh....looking at the 84 DVD right now...specifically the "I Have a Love" solo...in fact...here's a couple of pics from the DVD and a closeup of the left hand That is definitely the curvature of a prosthetic under the glove...why else woudl the glove be taped at the "fingers"? Also, if you watch the vid, the mello and left hand move as one, like they were attached. In 83 the glove WAS tied off underneath the mello....you can see it on the vids quite clearly. In 84 she had better control of the horn (not to mention the support of the left arm.) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Sam, let's put this to bed. I marched with the woman and I knew her well. She was born with a birth defect and used an artificial limb. We've already established this fact. And yes, by definition an artificial limb IS a prosthetic device. All this said, what you are looking at is the (for lack of a better term) "hook" which served as a substitue for her left hand taped up in her glove. She was incredibly adept in its use as a mellophone player and manipulation of her horn, she drove with it, dressed with it, and as a brass instructor with Cadets, Spirit and Sunrisers conducted with it. She had the same limb all the years I knew her. Dude, she was a friend of mine and I know these things firsthand, not by watching a video. I have to say this argument is pretty dumb. What should be talked about is what an amazing player Barbara was and the beauty of her solos in 1983 & 84. She was equally as beautiful a person. We've lost touch over the years but I hope she's happy wherever she is. Edited September 7, 2005 by George82
84BDsop
George....what we had was a failure to communicate...we were talking about the same thing, but using different terminology. And you'll NEVER find me talking about her playing in anything other than high praise...I've always pitched her as Garfield's greatest soloist...and I haven't heard anything since to dissuade me! tommytimp
as a brass instructor with Cadets, Spirit and Sunrisers conducted with it. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Wasn't her first gig after aging out of corps with the Crossmen? I sat at the rails at Madison for semis in 85 and I could swear I saw Barbara in overalls with the Xmen staff that night. She rocked, pure and simple. The comparisons to Bonnie Ott are valid, IMO. Medeabrass
She never used a prosthetic device at any time regardless of what you may feel you saw. Just the artificial limb. Barbara was not a french horn player. She was a trumpet player. She began on 3rd sop when she joined the corps and was later moved to mellophone late in the winter of our rookie season in 1981. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Isn't the word prosthesis synonymous with artificial limb? 84BDsop
The 2005 Cadet mellophone solo that ended the "New World" ballad by Bjork was clearly intended to reference Barbara's earlier solos with the Cadets. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Could you explain why you think so....if the section you're referring ot was on the broadcast? If that was the one, I didn;t hear anything that made me think of Barbara....it was a beautiful solo...great control and sound, but I don't hear any Barbara reference... Unless it was earlier in the program and I simply didn't see it...
StarContra4-85
I followed the '82-'84 tours heavily (including finals) and Barbara was always dead on. She had a warm, wonderful tone and could hold that long note forever, throat open, good pitch and support, unwavering emboucher. She is one of the great soloists of all time in this activity, and the Cadets were incredibly smart to put so much responsibility on her shoulders, she carried it well. mchromik
...as a brass instructor with Cadets, Spirit and Sunrisers conducted with it. Barbara also helped out during the winter camps for 86' Star. She was brought in by Donnie Van Doren and Jim Prime.
