AL/VFW Posts and Drum Corps

Recommended Posts

(Current) Talking about this with my folks over the weekend and I was surprised with the answer we came up with. After the hundreds of corps sponsored by American Legion and Veterans of Foreign War posts we could only come up with three that are still sponsoring corps.

AL Post #1523 Garbarina-Mazarakos - Skyliners

AL Post #199 Hawthorne - Caballeros

AL Post #14 Bair - Lancers Alumni

Wow - are there any more still out there?

(Old) Some American Legion posts were started after WWII by former corps members and were named after corps members who died during the war. Only two I can remember are

AL Post #1523 Garbarina-Mazarakos - Skyliners

AL Post #856 F.W. Reilly Memorial Post - Reilly Raiders

Posts started by former corps members (but not named after a member)

AL Post #119 Hawthorne (I think!)

OK DC history buffs, who am I missing

Many pre-WWII posts were re-named in honor of someone associated with the post who was killed in that war. Reilly was the Abram K. Street Post prior to WWII. The alumni corps if sponsored by the Willow Grove VFW Post.

Thanks Wayne, have seen the AK Street Post name before but didn't connect it to Reilly. The pre-WWII post naming fits for the few I know about here as they were named after the first local man killed in WWI. Notable exception is a Black Post in Harrisburg which was named after the last Black Civil War soldier to die in Harrisburg.

My dad was in both Street and Reilly. Street won the 1939 NY World's Fair Contest, which featured an I&E as well. I found their '39 banquet program in my folks attic and had it restored and framed for Dad a couple of years before he passed away. The I&E list was a "who's who" of what was to become Reilly: Bill Hooton; Frank McCormack; Harry Ginther.............

BTW, as of a couple of years ago, Mr. John Reilly; F.W.'s brother went everywhere with the alumni corps. He never played, but he did anything he could for his "kids".
