Where do you rehearse?

Just curious as to what kind of winter facilities are being used by corps today? Back when I was in Steel City, we used to have use of a local recreation center that had a gymnasium, a large meeting room and several small rooms for sectionals. It was free of charge as it was a city parks facility. It worked out pretty well.

With other corps I have been with, we have had to pay for high school and college facilities. Anyone out there have there own facility or some other arrangement?

The Reading Buccaneers have been fortunate to have use of Twin Valley High School in Elverson, PA during the winter and early spring months. This is mostly due to willingness of the band director to help us secure the facility. He was a member of the corps in 2004 and his son has been a member for several seasons. They have excellent rooms for us to use (band room, choir room, auditorium, gymnasium, cafeteria and several large classrooms.)

The relationship with Twin Valley has grown to the point where we host a Spring Preview show as a joint project with the band boosters.

We are happy to be back at Twin Valley High School in Elverson, PA on Sunday November 27th from Noon until 6 pm for our annual Membership Day and look forward to continuing our relationship with this excellent school district. We hope you come out to see the corps.

For the various corps I've been in...

juniors - Schools, mostly high schools, with decent access to gyms and facilities.

seniors

- PA - church parking lot, not sure if we ever went inside, but we had full use of the parking lot and surrounding areas.

- OH - VFW hall, inside most of the time. On occassion the use of a local school with decent shade and wind protection.

- TX - church, fairly full access to facilities. Baring conflicts with church events that use some of those facilities most weekends.

You speak of the Market House, Danny. Great facility in the middle of the city for all of the indoor practices, but unfortunately, no field nearby once the snow melted. Just the Washington Avenue 'field that wasn't really there' on the other side of town.

Just read that the Market house has been abandoned for several years and is waiting either for the historical society to renovate it, or for someone to tear it down. Too bad - I just came across some pics that we took of some SCA winter rehearsals from 86. Think I have one of you and Rabbit in the front line of 60+ horns doing drill basics in that tiny gym. Pretty awesome pics.

CorpsVets have been graciously accomodated by RHS band director Greg Teems and the Rockmart High School in Rockmart GA. Fantastic facility IMO, especially all the outdoor rehearsal areas - being in the south, we tend to have year round outdoor rehearsal opportunities. Plenty of indoor rehearsal room too - bandroom, cafeteria, gym, and various rooms for breakout sessions. And being sort of 'out of the way', not too many distractions.

We also use the old HS stadium in downtown Rockmart.

For Westshoremen 74-79 we had Cumberland Valley HS auditorium for horn and full corps winter rehearsals. For drill most of the time was on a city owned parking lot on an island in the middle of the Susquehanna River. In 1975 we were the only ones allowed in after dark as the city cracked down on illegal parties on the island. Few years we had drill camp at Shippensburg College in the Field House. Not too bad except for the short field. (Drill up to a certain spot, stop dead, move to the back of the gym and continue.)

In 84-85 a lot of drill was done on a field where the Harrisburg Senators baseball team palys today. Killed our rehearsal time there when the team moved in. :(

Lancers practice music in the American Legion Post in Hanover (our sponsors).... Drill... what drill.... :worthy:

The Market House.... a lot of good memories in that place. You're right about not having a field nearby, but don't forget how close it was to Dee's Cafe.

The junior California corps I marched with was fortunate enough to have it's own complete facility. It was a former office complex. It had an outdoor court yard in the middle of the facility which was used for staff and members, complete with vending machines, etc. The rest of the huge facility was used for offices and rehearsal areas for the horn line, percussion and guard. It sat on a completely fenced in and black topped lot which is where we parked our buses and trucks. We also did our marching rehearsals on the black top, which was very HOT during those warm summer days.

Every other storefront on the "Sa'Side" was/is a bar - it was heaven!

We use a few different sites. Post 199 in Hawthorne Was the primary spot during the winter.

Over the last few years we have used Saddle Brook middle school, Seacacus High school. Last year and hopefully this year we will Be using Hawthorne High school.

During the summer months we have used Hawthorne high school and the boys club Football fields. Along with the Kholer Parking lot. When the others where in use. Some day we should have our Field back that we use to use.

But for things like the open house (which by the way is on NOV 27th) and Rain Dates we use post 199 and the church close by.. I believe it is St Anthony's. That is where the Guard goes. so I am not sure of the name.

We are fortunate enough to have a relationship of members with the Loudoun Elks in Sterling, VA. They acquired a building and property for future use of the organization, but it is currently just an open warehouse with plenty of surrounding grounds out where no one is concerned with outdoor sounds. They have been very generous with our use of the facility.

The Bushwackers Winter Rehearsal Facility is at the Center for Law and Justice Building Atrium, in beautiful Newark, New Jersey on the Rutgers University campus. Here's a pic!

Last summer, our drill field was the Daewoo parking lot in Ridgefield Park, NJ. Here's a pic!
