Rocketman
The "winner" of that show may have received help in ways other than Shirley. For example, not being known for having an "outstanding" horn line, if the brass judges kept judging SCV after the first 2 songs, they would have been written off the sheets, it was that questionable. Sorry if you don't agree but, that was one suspect brass performance. The problem they (judges) had was, how could SCV, dropping to 4th, be justified? Thus, other corps (plural) with considerably better performances were "penalized." RM - just my "opinion" ampssuck

IMO, if you look at the finals recaps, Santa Clara's brass score was exactly where it should have been. Their combined brass execution average was in seventh place. However, their Music Analysis score tied with Phantom for first place; personally, I agree with that because of the difficulty of their brass book. So they were penalized for the problems they had in execution, but rewarded for the difficulty of their music, which averaged out to a fourth-place brass score overall. I don't have a problem with that.

However, the problems in execution, which, IMO, were many, should not have been overlooked (my contention) because of the difficulty of the book. It was an exceedling poor "performance" and even 7th, which is low, was probably too high from an execution point of view. Add to that a 9.8 in GE brass and I seriously question those scores. Then again, if there wasn't a controversy, it wouldn't be DCI! :) RM - always question ampssuck
