Is it just me, or is this a REALLY good DCI year?

You've got Cavies with their dark, complexly intricate "Machine" show with actual developed melodies and harmonies. Ending of course needs a little work (and is getting it) but the rest of the show is solid, they took a concept and did everything they could musically and visually with it...the program design is just so, I dunno...it's hard to describe. Refined perhaps is the best word. All the added sound effects in the pit and just all the "colors" of sound on the field during this entire show. Ballad is beautiful. Best visual program of the year. No, the show isn't an "in your face, blow you back into your seat" type of show, but it's amazing.

Haven't seen Blue Devils, but they seem to be on fire this year. Need to wait for an APD to give them a further evaluation, but the clips I've heard sound like their doing the Godfather justice. Seems like a real winner from BD, can anyone who's seen them comment further?

Phantom Regiment.... I'm sure many of you read my review of them from Powder Springs, so I won't repeat it. Let's just say this is probably the best show I've ever seen live. Great music, great drill, great drum corps. It's a classic already in my book.

Bluecoats have a wonderful, cohesive program from what I can tell from listening to the APD. Love the opening "pre-show" introduction a la Cadets '89. Great Bluecoats-esque opener, love the second jazzy movement, beautiful ballad that ties the show together. Can't wait to see them live the 29th.

Boston has a great show that I'm sure will take more than just one viewing to fully comprehend, but I look forward to it. It's a departure from their previous programs into a more mature show design, which I'm all for.

Madison Scouts...the show isn't Scouts-like at all, but it's growing on me. Better than last year, even. I need to see them live to give them a fair shot.

Santa Clara Vangaurd...saw the show online and it gave me shivers. I'll leave it at that. This is probably--no, is their best show since 2000.

Haven't seen Crown, but heard their pretty good. Spirit has a very enjoyable show that I'll be looking forward to seeing again. Waiting to see Glassmen, Blue Knights, Blue Stars, and Colts...but I've heard nothing but good things about them this year!

I've heard most shows thanks to APD's, and will get to see almost all of them live this weekend at Indy.

Cavaliers' Machine is every bit as good as grooving as the rest of the shows they've done this century, some of my very favorite shows, and I have no doubt the visual will make it even better.

Bluecoats have a book that I just love, with an opener as good as the second half of their 2003 show.

Santa Clara looks to have returned to the style I loved from 1998-2003, and the music kind of reminds me of their 2002 production. Good stuff.

Madison has a different approach this year, but I really like what they've put together. I recognize a lot of the music, but they've been able to take it and make it their own.

Colts have an entertaining product, I love hearing As Time Goes By, and the Saucedo piece works really well for them.

Cap Reg plays a great rendition of Equus, I can't wait to hear them clean it up.

Spirit's show is just non-stop, in your face, I have a feeling this is going to be a favorite for a lot of people.

Glassmen will have a great product when they get back, Beethoven is really a surprisingly unique approach, and works well.

Southwind has a difficult program, but they give you plenty of chances to get into the music and allow yourself be entertained.

The only corps I'm a little disappointed with right now is Phantom, but I expect that I'll enjoy their book more and more, once I get accustomed to such an agressive show.

I'm looking forward to seeing BD, Cadets, and Esperanza. But from everything I've seen so far, 2006 is turning out to be GREAT!. Much deeper than 2005 or 2004, so far.

Personally, I didn't really love any of the shows in 2004 or 2005 (except maybe 007 in 2004), but I'm really liking what I hear this year. Blue Devils are sounding amazing, I love what the Bluecoats have done, and the Cavaliers sound very good with their "Machine" theme. I haven't heard anything recent from The Cadets, but I loved everything about their show (except the vocals). SCV is doing MUCH better than last year, and looks like they're making some big improvements, and sounding good (haven't heard too much of their show either, but I'll get to see them live this week). So yes, in my opinion, I would say that this is a great year for DCI... and still lots of potential.

I have not seen everyone this season but by looking at scores it looks like there is a lot more parody than I have ever seen. That alone makes it great in my opinion. The best thing that could happen to the activity is if we saw more paraody. It would be so much more exciting if it wasnt just the same 2-3 corps winning every year.

On a related subject. What is an APD? Can someone help me out with this
