Sean1
Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and ideas.Sara raised many good issues that have got me thinking. Money and health are not really concerns and although I did march "G" (78-80), I was trained in my local school system before I discovered corps, so I am adaptable to any key. Besides at the age of 44 it's more about staying power than volume. B) Someone else raised a very interesting point that I had not considered about being in a competitive group and having that take my whole summer. Not sure if that is the right move for me at this point. Marching with an alumni corps might be a better way to ease both myself and my better half into this(although a fan, she did not march). Off to contact those groups that have been kind enough to speak to me as a result of this thread. I'll let you guys know where it goes. Thanks again!!!!!! good luck and have fun

CozyChopsCom
Truly this is one of the finest threads I've ever encountered. Folks who obviously have biases have mostly set them aside to give numerous options, whether competitive, alumni or otherwise. The great news is that there are lotsa choices. Better yet, those choices are expanding across the U.S., across the Great Divide. Gotta love it! Best of luck to all, newbies and vets for aught seven. Bushsop89
Yes, I do play horn. I played baritone in the 1993 Bushwackers (High Brass) and again in 2002. I also played Mellophone in the Westshoremen in 1988.Yes, I am a keyboard guy. I write and teach the pit at Bush. What I don't understand is why the key of the instrument matters. If Bush went to keyboards that were pitched in another key, it wouldn't make me go to another drum corps. I thought corps choice would be about the actual drum corps, the style of music and the people there. Not about the key of the hornline. Its a horn thang? Shouldn't it be a drum corps thang? <edited for spelling errors> Joe, How about drums or guard, do you ever do either of those? Dave

EuphKub79
That's cool - I don't think we've met, but from seeing you online, I've always thought you were a keyboard guy only. I guess it's just a matter of personal opinion. My opinion is that I want to play drum corps in a G horn line. You have a different opinion. We're all entitled to our own opinions. I noticed that the original poster marched in the early 80's, so he played a G bugle. Maybe that's what he would be more comfortable with now. Or maybe he doesn't care either, but I brought it up just in case it was an issue with him. It is a horn thang to me. I only do drum corps in G. If you don't agree with me, then that's cool - no worries! I respect your opinion. I also want to march in G playing music I like with people I like and that treat me with respect and dignity. This past summer I hit the jackpot. Next summer? If I don't do drum corps in G, I'll be making $$$$ in Bb. I have no intention of turning this thread into a G vs Bb thang. :P Peace! But a lot of people mistake their own opinions for some kind of fact, or they try to make up facts like "G hornlines are louder" etc. A myth clearly debunked in a thread regarding the DB levels of all the finalist corps. :)
camel lips
Here are the competitive DCA corps nearest to your location listed closest to farthest. Just some food for though. A friendly service brought to you by your friends at the Council for having More People March DCA.Hurcs - 1.5 hours Sun - 2.5 hours Bushwackers - 2.75 hours Cabs - 3 hours Sky - 3.25 hours Brigadiers - 3.75 hours Crusaders - 5 hours Bucs - 5 hours Empire - 5 hours Grennies - 5 3/4 hours I stopped around there because you mentioned keeping it under 5 hours or so. Hope this helps! If I lived that close to all of those it would be no question I would be marching for EMPIRE.THey do music that I can hum too.I also like thier attitude towards other corps.I don't think I have ever had a Statemen come out and lash out at me. If driving is a consideration take a look at the CAbs,.,They always have a exciting show and all of their members are a class act. Thier all great corps..cant go wrong with any of them.
