  1. Speaking of getting a ride: Anyone who lives in Pennsylvania, Marlyland, or West Virginia: Don't let your location be an issue... I drive 3 hours to Hawthorne from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. There is always a way to get to corps if you want to be there... the Cabs have LOTS of transportation options that you can choose from... or drive yourself, doesn't matter. Come grab a spot before they are gone!! www.cabs.org
  2. I predict DCA will have another audience favorite in the 2007 Caballeros!! Awesome camp, new drum corps family! Like I said before: THE HYPE IS REAL!! <<<< Listening to audio clip again!!
  3. Ok, back on topic you knuckleheads!! We are going to be a force to be reckoned with come summer. The hype is real, and I love that. If anyone is thinking about marching, come on down and chill with the Cabs for 1 day... you will be hooked, I can guarantee it. As an recent alumni of two very competitive drum corps, I never thought I would find myself here, it just wasn't something that I saw myself doing but I'm so glad I took a risk because this place is second-to-none. The members are incredible, outgoinging and friendly, the staff is top-notch, and the organization is outstandingly well-run. www.cabs.org
  4. not to mention his HANDSOME-ness. :) (hi dave!) :)
  5. You can hear the original "Murder in Manhattan" at Key's website... www.keypoulan.com Great charts!
  6. Moving my own post to conform with Cabs posting policy. My own choice.

  8. I cannot speak for anyone else but even though I've only been around DCA since 2000, it's hard NOT to know about Sky's extremely impressive past reputation. Sky is such an incredibly unique organization it would be nothing short of tear-jerking (the good kind) to see them make a comeback into the upper echelon of competition. Things really seem to be looking up for a lot of DCA corps and with all the growth in the South, West, and Mid-West... wouldn't it be great to have 2 rounds of prelims before finals someday? :)
  9. Agreed!! Never saw the corps in their heyday but I know people who were there and it would be a great thing to see them reach and/or exceed the level at which they once were.
  10. Weren't many of these old Sky numbers done with a full corps? What about something that would work for Sky in its current incarnation? Unless the corps is anticipating a huge jump in numbers they might consider examining the format that the "A" corps have been winning with the last couple of years and adapt it to their own style. A lot of smaller groups have a lot of luck using stages and/or backdrops to make their shows more effective by "walling off" the field and creating a smaller, more intimate stage. The less empty field there is, the more effective you will look. Just make sure you guys march and play even better than before and that the show is well-coordinated and makes logical sense... that is step #1.
  11. Yes, Black Gold was the one... but maybe it's been so long that he's eased up about it...or maybe he will only let certain arrangers do it. Guess the only way to know for sure is to contact his publisher.
  12. Good luck getting the rights to that... from what I understand de Meij won't let ANYONE arrange his pieces any more. Some corps out in the Midwest (Oklahoma I think?) used Lord of the Rings without permission and that was pretty much the end of that.... From what I hear. Can anyone confirm this?
  13. I agree... if the corps is reaching a turning point, they should REALLY commit to it and add to their already illustrious identity in some way.
  14. I can say from experience that Dennis is a REALLY talented guy. His books are a treat to play and he is epitome of the word "class." Can't wait to "officially" join this corps... see you all at Open House!!!!!!! b**bs
  15. Congrats Sky, the future is looking bright for you guys :)
  16. Appropriateness is ALWAYS a consideration for any youth activity, especially when they are being televised from coast-to-coast!! I judge indoor guard and marching band and if I something inappropriate (VERY rarely), whether it be the subject matter or the amount of skin showing... I make darn sure I mention it on my tape, I can't imagine that DCI doesn't do the same. There is such a thing as design choice, but dressing up kids like $5 tricks is quite another. What exactly is "sexual" about drum corps that you find so offensive. Drum corps is probably one of the most kid-friendly shows out there. And just for the record... Shrek 2 is rated PG, that means it was not intended for small children to see.
  17. I doubt it... I hate to say this because I have lots of respect for Cadets as a corps but... they tend to find a formula and milk it to death... they found their new formula in 2005 and I predict we will see shows in a similar vein for at least another year, if not several... it depends on how much steam they get out of the concept... observe.... 1981-1990 Music = Bernstein, Copland, Show Tunes, etc... all typically "American" music. Visual = Z-Pull, fast tempos 1991-1999 = Modern Band and Orchestra with a few nods to their past thrown in (94 WSS, 96 Copland). Visual = Fast tempos, progressive guard, fast drill. 2000-2003 = Clowning Around. Many different genres of music. Visual = Loose and "stage-y" much of the time. 2004 = ????????????? 2005-2006 = Original Music with a twist. Visual = Surrealism on the football field. A brilliant move the first time... 2nd time had a few specks of brilliance but not enough IMO to sustain a whole show. I expect they'll get at least one more show out of this before people starting buying little Cadets voodoo dolls. I personally would NOT like to see them do Appalacian Spring again. I for one hated seeing what happened when they did RPH in 2003, it just goes to show you that you can't go home again... leave the classics alone.
  18. Yes, that 1991 show was pretty awful, I heard a rumor that some music judges actually thought the temple block used in Short Ride in a Fast Machine was mistakenly thought to be a time-keeping device and not part of the original music?? Pretty hard to believe but I don't know how popular that piece was when it came out... it was only a few years old at the time CBC played it. Anyone else ever hear that?
  19. But a lot of people mistake their own opinions for some kind of fact, or they try to make up facts like "G hornlines are louder" etc. A myth clearly debunked in a thread regarding the DB levels of all the finalist corps. :)
  20. Glassmen had a huge turnover of staff and they never got the same level of people back from what I heard... BAC I really am not sure about, but I would imagine something similar happened, I don't know. But Bluecoats have been constantly on the rise for a good 6 years, Glassmen only enjoyed 2-3 years in the top 6 and BAC has been on and off for the last 6 years... they aren't very consistant in their placements. I predict if Crown keeps growing it could be them as well, I think we're all pretty much in agreement that it will either be BC or Crown.
  21. Bluecoats. They have considerably more depth to their show design as of late than Crown or BAC have ever had and they have been developing a performer to take it to the next level. Personally I feel that the talent they have coming into that corps is actually starting to grow beyond the staff and I hope they realize that and make some changes. Sometimes staffs have to change just to keep up with a growing talent level in the membership and I think Bluecoats were at that point this past year at finals.
  22. Hey while we're at it, why don't we strap 50 lb rocks to every brass player's bell, give them ankle weights, cuff their hands together, and make them march with their pants around their ankles??
