Diceman
For some reason I show the "Syracuse Brigadiers" beating the Cabs at the '49 AL Prelims, and coming in 10th at Finals... As the Brigs were formed years later ('56?) I'm wondering which "Brigadiers" this could have been? Anyone? Diceman
I read somewhere the Brigs have roots going back to 1938,.........................that is all i know,.............. Thanks, Gary... According to the Brigs Alumni website: "The Syracuse Brigadiers Drum & Bugle Corps is a precision musical/marching Organization that is historically significant to the City of Syracuse and the Central New York Region. The Corps proud history began in 1938 when a Junior Drum & Bugle Corps was organized by the Polish Legion of American Veterans (P.L.A.V.) Post #14 in Syracuse, NY.. After a few years of dormancy during World War II the original Corps was reorganized into an all age Drum & Bugle Corps in 1947. At this time, the corps entered into the realm of field competition. This corps won every title as P.L.A.V. National Champions every year that the event was held." (So I guess it *was* the Brigs at the '49 ALs!?) "The year 1954 brought about an expansion of the Corps when "The Boys From Syracuse"," The Cortland Moose" and "The Sons of American Legion Post#41 all merged under the present title of "The Syracuse Brigadiers". This was the first step in their climb to international fame. " This is where I somehow got the idea they were formed in the mid-50s... Now my head doesn't hurt any more! :P And Jim: which corps were you with? (If it was a junior corps, I bet you were over-age!) Heh... JimF-LowBari
Another case of a corps name (Brigs) being in the records before the name was used by the corps? Oh those later updates :P (If I remember right) According to "History of Drum Corps" Westshoremen won 1952 VFW Champs. Problem is they didn't change their name until a few years later. Ironic part was they were known as the Longshoremen in '52 but got so much publicity for the VFW win that the Longshoremens Union sued 'em for using the name. I think you are right that the use of the name Brigadiers for this score was probably latter day revisionism. Case in point, also at this show was the Geneva Appleknockers. A member who joined in 1951 tells me they went by the name Winnek Post at that time and the name Appleknockers was not used until several years later (probably by 1954 Legion Nationals at Washington, DC).
