Holy smoke...........I was at that show........Jimmy Dinkins (Archie/Air Force) comes up North from Alabama every season for both indoor & field shows, still drums/teaches, but no longer marches; Dennis Marta (Vasella) is perc. writer/instructor for Archie; Kenny Newman still plays with Reilly..........then there's Blue Rock........Larry Kerchner was in THAT brass quartet. His mouthpiece was a Parduba double cup (not sure what size) on a french horn or cornet shank. And here is the story behind Riggie and Pepe's battle for the Individual Soprano title. When Pepe asked Riggie what he was gonna play for the contest, Riggie told Pepe he was only playing in exhibition, Pepe said, "I didn't come here to listen to you play, I came to compete". Riggie said "Okay then I'll compete". Riggie played "Flight of the Bumble Bee" (ala Raphael Mendez) didn't miss a note (on his Czeckoslovakian peeshooter Getzen DeLuxe piston/slide G-D horn no less), won his last National Championship and retired. 14 National Championships in 9 years and retired undefeated. Riggie told me that story just a couple of weeks ago. Pepe's piece for soprano individuals was usually "Carnival of Venice", but, as he used to say in high Brooklynese, "Somebody's gonna catch a beatin'." And at that particular show, it was he who caught the aforementioned "beatin' ". For the record, here is Riggie's Individual Championship history. Riggie is my Hero Gene, he may be switching to a 3 valve. The last rehearsal I was at before going on vaction (Jan. 28) he was toying around with one.
