Puppet
Oh, I think that is very much on topic, Puppet. There used to be so many corps, many of them marching members as young at 9 or 10 years old. I was 12 when I started. You mean like these kids who joined in October and would be on the field by the next summer? Oh yeah, I know what you mean! scott414
Yes people would be astounded! In NY if you only go by state AL Championships you will only get a small idea of how many corps there were in NY. We marched in many parades and saw at least 10 parade corps in the Western NY area alone and probably more. NJ was pretty much the same at both VFW and American Legion shows in Wildwood. I remember standing on the "inspection line" at Maxwell Field as the sun was coming up over the horizon. The show lasted from early morning probably to almost lunchtime. Then a few hours off to rest before the parade. NJ drum corps at its finest!!

cmdiddle
What about the Freelancers?...and you thought you would get a quick answer to your question???? Garry's memory is perhaps better than mine, but by then Monterey Park Girls were defunct, and Third Generation and Koyasan Boy Scouts were the same corps. What I can't remember is if Joaquin Caballeros, Pinole Princemen, and Lakewood Ambassadors were still active in 1972.

Are you saying that 20 or so is the best you could do from the entire State of California in 1972? Wow! I felt as if I was under representing when I said we had only 13 (Junior) in the City of New York - hate to think of the number if I added the Seniors and then dumped in Long Island. Up State New York was like wall to wall. We could have had as many as 200 that year. I recall one American Legion Championship that went like this: 1 St. Joseph's of Batavia 83.750 2 Magnificent Yankees 80.880 3 Bronx Kingsmen 80.520 4 St. Roccos 74.950 5 St. Joseph Patron Cadets 74.850 6 Emerald Statesmen 69.080 7 OLPH Ridgemen 68.020 8 Appleknockers 62.190 9 Shortsville Shamrocks 60.880 10 Vagabonds (NY) 60.060 11 OLC Ramblers 58.290 12 Purple Lancers 55.480 13 St. Joseph's Islanders 54.780 14 Carter Cadets 54.410 15 St. Ignatius 51.220 16 Kingston Indians 51.150 17 Grenadiers of Broome County 50.450 18 Mello-Dears 46.710 19 Continental Cadets 34.510 20 St. Joe's Peanuts 26.880 DIVISION SR 1 Skyliners 86.810 2 Rochester Crusaders 85.200 3 Syracuse Brigadiers 83.300 4 Sunrisers 80.080 5 Hamburg Kingsmen 76.380 6 Interstatesmen 72.830 7 Wanderers Just saying … bunch of corps out there then. Puppet Puppet, Yes, indeed! 1966 at Albany, NY. I was there on the inspection, ready, and starting lines. A very hot day it was! I am convinced now that the magnitude of the activity in NY was even bigger than I appreciated from my upstate legion competitive perspective. Geneva
The reality behind the census is that the numbers reported are always smaller than how many there actually were. These are just the ones that have been documented as being active. There may well have been in excess of 90 active in '72, since many corps that are reported as active in both 1971 and 1973 are not listed as being active in '72. Most probably were. The vast majority of junior corps in NY never competed at the state contests. Just the number of all-girl corps from NY is amazing. Brian, I would be interested in seeing a list of the field corps in NYS in 1972. I wonder how many of those corps I have actually heard of. Russellrks
What about the Freelancers?...and you thought you would get a quick answer to your question???? The Freelancers used to be called the Capitolaires since they were from the State Capitol of Sacramento. They changed their name to the Capitol Freelancers sometime around 1974? I'm guessing, and sometime later just became the Freelancers.
