US Open Memories

This is what is "cool" about the tick system. A score could change dramatically! Yes Vags jumped but look at Grenadiers drop from 72 to 65 and Charioteers drop 8 points.

It was a HUGE surprise when the Vagabonds came back from 5th place at prelims to win finals in '72. They were tied for 13th in brass in prelims, and #1 in brass at finals. They were 7th in GE at prelims, and were #1 at finals.

Here are the prelim/finals scores for the top 7 Class 'A' corps:

August 11, 1972 Marion, OH

U.S. Open 'A' prelims

Etobicoke Crusaders 72.9

Grenadiers 72.7

Belvederes 71.85

Opti-Knights 71.2

Vagabonds 70.95

Royal Crusaders 70.3

Charioteers 70.2

August 11 Marion, OH

U.S. Open 'A' finals

Vagabonds 68.3

Etobicoke Crusaders 67.75

Opti-Knights 66.6

Belvederes 66.35

Grenadiers 65.95

Royal Crusaders 62.95

Charioteers 62.9

That was the year the Royal Crusaders debuted their new red/white/blue uniforms, and they tore the house down at finals with their show at Marion. Of course just 3 years later they made DCI Open Class finals with those same uniforms.

Does anyone have the scores from the 1979 USO? It was a very memorable trip for me as I was working with the Lockport Blazers and it was our first venture into the great unknown of championship drum corps. I believe we took last but made a respectable showing with a bunch of 12 yr. olds. After that show I flew from Columbus to Newark to work with CRU at Giants Stadium (not a particularly strong year for CRU either, BTW). Thanks.

Wow, my memory can't be that bad! was there a class B slate? I know I was in Marion and the year was 1979 and it was the Blazers. I also remember a fairly impressive all girls corp that performed shortly after us.

I worked with Blazers during the winter of 1981-82 and then came the merger to form the Renegades. Paul Villella was a nice guy but I understand he messed up, got caught and disappeared.

79 was the first year the Glassmen fielded a DC after a 3 year lay off.

And in 1982 they were defeated in a football game in Montreal against the Renegades (NY).
