DCIHasBeen
One of my students that I sponsor called me tonight after the show in Walnut, CA and said "As we (SCV) were pulling up to the show site, people were throwing rocks at our bus! Our Caption Head said not to go ANYWHERE alone....even the bathroom. It's definately in the 'shady' area for sure." I know last year, we had a few show sites that were next to or IN the ghetto, but none ever threw rocks at us. Have you had an experiance like this? Where would you say are the 'Not-so-friendly' show sites? Doesn't really sound like Walnut ... It's a nice community with some fairly upscale homes. Mt. SAC is in a pretty good neighborhood as well. Doesn't even begin to compete with dives like the Manning Bowl (torn down I believe) and Randall's Island.
MHSmirage
That's what I originaly thought..... I'm assuming it was just some punks with nothing better to do than throw rocks at corps busses.
scadesboi
Boston in 05, we stayed next to a project where the train went by every half hour. It was scary. Oh, and Pioneer saw someone get shot...that was fun to hear...
Tony Flores
2 places come to mind... 94 Finals Week...We stayed in a vocational highschool in Lynn, Mass that had to be locked down at night and we could hear gunfire. In '96...Racine, WI (at what we called 'Drums along the Slums)...I was the victim of a drive-by ice creaming...a vanilla cone to my melon
somerville
Lynn Mass, which no longer sponsors a show because the blew up the Manning Bowl. The show, including corps and fans are great. It is just in Lynn, Mass which is very ghetto. The saying goes: Lynn, Lynn, the city of sin...
frontline99
Orlando. You pass so many liquor stores and porn shops on the way to the stadium its unbelievable. as for nationally... ORLANDO CITRUS BOWL!!! in 03 a group of us decided to walk to a mcdonalds down the street from the stadium.. wow... definition of ghetto. Citrus Bowl.I am sure I saw a drug deal going on right in front of the stadium! Orlando is a horrible place for a football game or drumcorps show. YES! Our middle school in Orlando was surrounded by a 9 ft razor wire fence. And I know what the ghetto is. My jobs requires me to take a police escort with me every day because the neighborhood I work in is so dangerous and I would rather walk around there at night than the the one we stayed at in 2003. Slow Adam
Where was the Division II/III show in Buffalo last summer? That was a pretty rough spot.
blueorginal
Jackson, MS 93, Bluecoats, I sat up most of the nites watching the doors, when we arrived there were chicken bones scattered around the gym, the football team liked our guard, houses across the street were burned out, boarded up and tagged. Kids made the most of it and adjusted to being locked in at night.
ekrebs102
Jackson was '93, I believe. And yes....it was BAD. I remember having a police escort into our (Bluecoats) Housing site and also the 24/7 security guard. Horn arc was always fun, as the local folks would come out, sit across the street with their 40 oz.'s, get smashed, and conduct our music for us. WOW is all I can say. Cue Bart...... ContraRich77
In 1989 we (Blue Devils) were warming up at the Riverside, CA show, the hornline was running down "Johnny One Note" when a group of about 8-10 thugs forcibly shoved aside some bari players, did a stupid little dance in front of the hornline, and forced themseves out THROUGH the soprano line. This is the 1989 Devs hornline we're talking about. Not exactly a girl scout troop. Those thugs.............well, er....................let's just say they got "stomped"
