Salas OUT as Director of Scouts!

Recommended Posts

Tom........you seem sincere so I'll respond. How about a little patience?

Amen!

I was offered the position of Asst Director Of Spirit a few years back, and it took four weeks or more for all the details to come to light so that I could make a decision whether to accept the job or not. As it turns out, I declined. So...these things do indeed take time. It won't happen overnight!

Exactly.

As the head seamstress for the corps for the past two seasons (and unofficially for the year prior to that), I have no idea whatsoever what is going on other than having received an inpersonal e-mail from the new president of the board asking us to not act quickly and to remember why we worked for the Scouts to begin with. Well...HELLO...it was Sal and Michael that recruited me so, what does that mean?

Here I sit, with 100 or so pairs of cleaned by me at my home at my expense last week gauntlets in my basement, ready for the next stage of repair before the 2007 season, a bunch of my personal sewing belongings still on the equipment truck that I basically allow the corps to use since the budget is tight and the sewing crew needs this stuff to function effectively, WONDERING what the heck is REALLY up. Whatever this new direction is, I'd like it to also include the cleaning of the uniforms that are sitting dirty on a truck trailer in a parking lot in the sun, whether I continue to be involved with the corps or not. I realize this is fluff considering all that is happening - however, it's the fluff I was charged with taking care of and who even knows to think about the condition of uniforms during this crisis (feels like a crisis to me). I doubt the Board is going to discard the 1 year old uniforms in an effort to make that disgruntled batch of alumni that hates the new look happy...I mean, that wouldn't be fiscally responsible.

Not at all a happy camper here in Kaukauna, Wisconsin!

Mary, thank you for all you've done. As a part time cook for the Scouts, I've had plenty of chances to observe you and your team in action, and there's no way I could ever stay up most of the night making alterations and doing all that intricate work. I have no patience for it.

I expect I will put in a week on tour sometime next season, and I hope to see you then. The other day I received a note from Debbie stating she'd be back.

A lot of alumni reconnected with the corps over the summer, and I hope they can maintain that connection. The closer they get, the more they will understand the corps' challenges both on and off the field, and the more they'll bond with the kids. I can honestly say that there wasn't a meal where someone - a marching member, a staff member, or a fellow volunteer - didn't thank me for being there.

That sort of thing doesn't put money in your pocket, but it makes you a richer person just the same.

I want to echo these sentiments...I offered my services to drive next summer to Cody as they were packing up finals night...and I would be happy to offer it to the new admin as well (provided that I am able to make myself available). I had the time of my life in '05 and would love nothing better than to do it all over again. I can't even put into words the sense of loss I had when May rolled around and I knew I wouldn't be with the corps. It felt like the summer of '97 all over again... :(

The Scouts are going to be just fine. There's a change in leadership, but that happens in every orginization sooner or later. They'll be OK.

Heh, what's funny is that the most vocal critics of the present Scouts always seems to be alum, prompting non-alum to come to the current corps defense. B)

Its not so funny really. You ve never been that big a fan of Scouts until recently, you as a fan liked the changes over the past 4 years whereas many former members didnt. I daresay Alumni have more of a stake in what happens to the corps than you do.

Im not saying your opinion isnt valid but it comes from a different place than the critical alumni you seem to think are so terrible. Youre talking about your likes and dislikes and preferences. Alumni are talking about their brotherhood, an important formative experience in their lives and the prospects that it remain a great experience for all involved. It stands to reason Alumni are going to feel this more deeply than you.

I've always been a big fan of the Scouts, the 1996 show was one of the first I ever listened to when I found out about the activity. They're one of the corps that drew me in, along with Cavaliers 1995, after watching a Blue Devils practice and stage show.

But while I love Scouts 1993, 1995, 1997, 1999, I also love 2003 and 2005. I even enjoy 2004 and 2006. I get that being a Scout is being part of a brotherhood... but if I can find something to like in the past four Scout shows, why do certain alumni have such trouble? I get that there's tradition involved with being a Scout, and that side of the organization is something I'll never know... but the dissatisfaction I read on DCP, a public forum for people like me, is almost entirely about the product on the field.

I don't hear alumni talking about brotherhood, I hear alumni talking about their likes and dislikes and preferences, just as you stated that I am. What's funny to me is that the most vicious comments always seem to come from former Scouts. I remember the thread titled "What in the world are the Scouts Playing? And Why?", started by a former Scout. Are you telling me you haven't noticed this trend, of alumni attacking the product because of their likes and dislikes? I know I'm not the only one.
