JustinDMoore
Has anyone had any experience ripping their Championship DVDs or BluRays? I buy all of my movies digitally and store them in iTunes where I can wirelessly stream them full quality to any of my televisions. I wish I had the option to buy champs digitally as well. Any insight as to DCI might move in this direction someday? In the meantime, I'm thinking about ripping all of my old DVDs and BluRays (I'd like each individual show to be its own file if possible). Has anyone had any luck with this? I didn't find much discussion on this when I searched. Thanks!
Pete Freedman
I don't own them, so I don't know. However, there may be a ban on this topic in the forum rules; I didn't check. That may be why there's no discussion of it. I'm not a lawyer, but: Legally, my guess is it's specifically prohibited according to the contract that comes with the DVD, but may actually be allowed by case law (which trumps the purchase contract), as long as you don't distribute it. In other words, my understanding is that owning rips of original media that you legally own is not illegal, but it appears to be illegal because the media companies always say it is (in order to discourage it). But it's not. Clear as mud? Before I had FN I had VHS tapes from the TV broadcasts, which were also legal to own and view regardless of the dire warnings on the programs themselves. You just can't distribute. That's just my perception and is not definitive at all. Assume I'm completely wrong.
JustinDMoore
Interesting. I'm a police officer and have no interest in distributing illegal content. I like my job too much to lose it. I just didn't see a problem ripping them if I purchased them.
year1buick
Makemkv can rip blu-rays (super easy) Handbrake can rip DVDs to iTunes format or convert .mkv files (from ripped blu-rays) to iTunes format. Both are free downloads
shhmatt
makemkv is great for blu-rays. mplayer is great for dvds. ffmpeg is great for converting the videos to the format you want. mplayer and ffmpeg are free as well.
Everyfan
I think the DMCA makes it illegal to break the encryption on a DVD or Blu-Ray. So, while it may not be illegal to rip them, it is illegal to breaker the encryption (which is necessary to rip them).

There is software out there depending on type of computer that makes it pretty easy to do.

MikeN
Handbrake has been my friend, for sure. Also been buying individual videos from Fan Network - especially for 1's and 2's of shows, the cost is worth it to be able to avoid the time and headache of conversion. (And of course, my annual plea to DCI - START OFFERING VIDEO DOWNLOAD BUNDLES!) Mike

So, while it may not be illegal to rip them, it is illegal to breaker the encryption (which is necessary to rip them). Yeah, one law states you can back up your DVDs, another states you can't break the encryption, and the consensus opinion seems to be that the latter law trumps the former, but it may depend on where you are. Enforcement is said to be very low (or non-existent) if you have the legal media, but of course that could change. And let's be honest, if you have ripped a movie or DCI show, and a friend asks for a copy, that's some heavy duty peer-pressure. I suspect the percent of people who would refuse such a request is low. A significant minority at most.
