blitzcon Posted August 5, 2008 Posted August 5, 2008 Ah yes I love this topic! Snares: Bluecoats with their Evans heads, Cavaliers with their Remos Quads: Most Yamaha lines, primarily Cavaliers Basses: Cavaliers. There's just something they do right with their basses year after year. Even with Casella and co, they've kept the same bass tuning and it's absolutely amazing. Quote

As a former Purdue All-American snareline member I may disagree with you a tad. The Cavie tenors certainly have a signature sound, but when tuned right I prefer the heavier Pearl sound. Listen to Phantom '90 to know what I mean. SCV has some good tenor line sounds in the early '90s too. Personally I like what Phantom is doing. Don't really like Cavies snare sound, but their basses do sound good. Cadets do a pretty good job with their tuning too. Quote
BigSnareline Posted August 5, 2008 Posted August 5, 2008 Basses? - I think Mandarins. Those Premier basses sounded great. Snares? - Madison. As good as any Yamaha snare has ever sounded Tenors? SCV - hands down. Quote
caliquads Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 tenors - Phantom, I heard someone tuning in the lot at Stanford this year. I didnt even know phantom was at the show (I know I know), but when I heard that sweet deep tone off in the distance I knew who it was. I also like BD, they have a signature sound you can also hear in the tuning of RCCs tenors, Cavaliers are great also, nice and exposed. Snare - Madison, Roger Carter knows how to tune a Yamaha snare drum. Bass - Lol at the premier comment, those drums suck so hard from a hardware standpoint, tough to make your drum sound good then the tension rods are bent... But anyway, I haven't honestly been amazed with anyone's tuning this year, but I love cavies bass line :p Quote
silvertrombone Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 My favorites:Snares: Bluecoats / Phantom / Crown Tenors: Phantom Basses: Phantom OK, I'm just a brass honk--what do I know, right? But last time I checked, "favorite" and "best tuned" are not necessarily the same. I'm guessing that "best tuned" is probably the line that is averaging 0.45 above everyone else lately. Favorite can be anybody. Quote
ajlemm Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 Phantom Regiment for me is the best sounding. Their sound seems deeper and more resonant than other corps. Love it. Quote
Zeke Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 Phantom!! I'm not sure what Rennick does to those dynasty drums..but they sound Sweet, especially the Snares. Quote
hughesmr Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 I assume this has Regiment's endorsement: As for me, I like PR's overall battery ensemble sound the best, but for individual voices, I've always liked Cadets snare sound (a bit thick and chunky from a distance, with plenty of body), SCV's tenors (can't go wrong with big Pearls and big cookie mallets), and PR's basses.
