Rimba47 Posted March 13, 2010 Posted March 13, 2010 (edited) If you wanted to show a friend who knows nothing about Drum Corps a Short (30 - 60 second) clip of just what the activity is and has become what clip would you show? Which 30 second or minute of any show do you think gives the best example of what drum corps is and can leave this person with a good idea of what drum corps is? Nearly impossible task I think because drum corps encapsulates so much! But give it a shot. *edit (because of the post below this one)* It could depend on the kind of person watching. So, what would you show according to these different kinds of people? -knows about highschool marching band/ parades: -is a music major/music oriented person: -knows nothing about marching music at all: **Remember short clips of a show not the entire show!!** Edited March 13, 2010 by Rimba47 Quote
DrinkinOuttaCups Posted March 13, 2010 Posted March 13, 2010 One thing to consider is who you're showing it to. If you're showing drum corps to a friend who's only experience of any marching arts was watching their old high school marching band play "Louie Louie" at half-time, you'd probably be better off showing them something that's physically and visually impressive, such as a Cavaliers show from pretty much any year this decade, or maybe even Carolina Crown 2009 for the insane amount of bodywork and choreography they do. However, if you're showing this to a friend who is, let's say, a music major, you'd be better of showing them something more music-oriented, perhaps with stuff by a composer they've heard of. If you're looking for musical shows from this decade, I'd again suggest Crown 2009, and also SCV 2009. Also, while I'm a little bit iffy about it, gimmicky shows work for the non-drum corps folk. Carolina Crown 2007, Bluecoats 2007 and 2008, Cavaliers 2006...shows with a very obvious theme. They may not be the most impressive shows, but they do a good job of keeping the viewer interested because they're easy to understand. Yes, I've done this before. Quote
DanjrusMcRynky Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 For me its kind of general, and ill admit there are really no horn parts in it, but... I like to show/have people listen to SCV's 2005 drumbreak. Quote
CoHmempho04 Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 End of Cadets 2000, 2003 Phantom Closer. I like using 2004 Cavaliers (high cam) as a good example of music / drill if I have a good bit of time to show them the video. Quote
euponitone Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 Ive never been in a drum corps elevator, but if its like most elevators i've been in, the pitch would either be an Ab, or maybe an F# (seems popular for some reason) Quote
TerriTroop Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 Well, I honestly do this a lot when I can. Some of the shows I've used bits from are: 2007 Crown - so accessible, especially the end from William Tell onward; also the ballad is gorgeous and people say "hey, that's Wild Horses!" 2006 Cavies - Machine was incredibly fun and the concept is easy to grasp. 1992 Crossmen - I love this show, and the drum break to the end amazes me every time 1992 Madison - City of Angels is another show I adore, also drum break to the end just kills me 1991 Cadets - I use this one more for the higher end music major types simply because Short Ride is so well done, and the closer Prelude, Fugue and Riffs just KILLS I don't usually go before the 1990's since older drum corps is often an acquired taste for the uninitiated, but not always. It's kind of hit and miss. But if I'm going to go old school I'll do BD from the mid 80's, Garfield 83-87, SCV 83-89, Bridgemen, VK (Magical Mystery Tour especially), Cavies 85 or 88.... or whatever I can find on the Fan Network in a hurry. Honestly, when I play shows from the 80's it's usually in response to a question like "when you were marching, what was it like?" Quote

Well, you would want to stay away from Bb because the idea of falling to your death would be bad. Edited March 14, 2010 by Mello Dude Quote
