  1. JJ!! What's up bro? Yeah I live in Nashville... I'm a recording Engineer with a pretty sweet gig recording the Nashville Symphony. I have been in sessions all weekend. I also got married .. i really like it here... don't think I'll be moving back, but hopefully next summer i can talk the wifey into letting me march Music City Legend. I aged out SDub in 2005 and I miss it.
  2. From and Old Heat Wave Alum, now living in Tennessee.... Good Luck Sun Devils.... and btw that is a pretty sweet name ya got there.
  3. oops i should learn to read before i post....
  4. 2004 Southwind and troopers were lined up next to each other getting ready to on for retreat at San Antonio. we are lined up through the bowels of the alamo dome.... we are at parade rest. a top 6 STAFF came through and wanted to cut through our lines. when we silently didn't let them and when we didn't they started #####ing.... in my head though i thought to myself it doesn't matter if we (southwind) lets them through.... because there is no way in HECK the troopers were gonna let that happen. But to answer the question.... ranks are sacred to every member of southwind...... dems fighting actions.
  5. there are some early season vids of it on youtube i think...
  6. Thanks man, that show was a blast to march. That was a special year with a special corps.
  7. Any news on when S-Dub will be announcing their show? as an alumni I'm curious...
  8. As a Classical Recording Engineer... I have 1 bit of advice..... DON'T DO ANYTHING.... the guys that work on the CD's are very knowledgeable with several Grammy's amongst them.... Mastering is a very painstaking process that even most engineers aren't very good at.... don't go and squash the hell out of the recordings with a cheesy sounding compressor you find for free online... they are suppose to have dynamics... this isn't a pop album. trust me they have optimized these recordings to play as loud as possible without crapping out your system... if you want it louder.... turn it up, but please don't go messing with the original..... pleeeeeeeeeeease. as a little background... I work with the guys from Soundmirror who have worked on the DCA recordings lately and also assist Larry Rock (they are friends) with the DCI recordings.... they are very knowledgeable and know what they are doing. There normal gig is recording all of the Boston Symphony Concerts in Symphony Hall, Boston.
  9. I was under the impression that this is the year for brand new S-Dub unis....
  10. ... Philip Glass Ensemble.... saw them last night..... FREAKING SWEET!
  11. The Old Southwind of Montgomery, AL and the New Southwind from Lexington, KY are one in the same. At the end of 1997 Dave Bryan (the father of SW) had saved quite a bit of money for the corps and realized he couldn't do what southwind really needed as Director. He turned over operation and all properties to his friend Scott Stewart and the Madison Drum and Bugle Corps Association, which ran S-Dub beginning in the 1999 Season... (Southwind took of 1998 for the move and to build ties in the Lexington Area) and the rest is History.
  12. whoa whoa whoa..... This is where I the recording engineer step in..... A)Digital didn't really start sounding good til recently... for proof see 80's pop music (if it sounded good in the 80's it was ANALOG) B)The best analog gear of the era would have sounded a million times better then what they must have used... for proof listen to Steely Dan, EWF, all the great bands from the 70's.... Some still prefer analog... my mentor is one. So in summary.... Analog can sound Better then Digital.... the true culprit is the shoddy recording tactics used on DCI recordings of the era... Also at the Nashville Symphony I work with two guys who are engineers for the Boston Symphony... they are actually friends with Larry Rock, and the help with the DCI recording (started doing it in 1999) and do the DCA recordings themselves.... So I KNOW the technology they use now and its good stuff. Carry on.
  13. Southwind.... one of the most consistant fan favorites over the past few years.... New Drum Staff, New Guard Staff..... good things will come!

About the 2007 season, Lindsay Kusmierczak said, “I have always wanted to return to Southwind, there was always a strong sense of camaraderie and family-like atmosphere with the corps. My first summer of Southwind was where I fell in love with the activity. I look forward to continuing the education and growth of the color guard program at Southwind this summer.”
  15. I do agree drum corps vets would have the most knowledge to teach a band (marching and playing), but basically all of us here are vets so I'm not referring to us. I'm referring to the person that goes to a college that doesn't require it and didn't march drum corps.... i think those people are at a VAST disadvantage then even a person that marches in College band. Why do you think A lot of small schools have agreements with large schools around to add members to the marching bands... I know for a fact FSU (atleast they use to) have members of Tallahassee Community College march with them.... I think Belmont has an agreement to march with Vanderbilt.... Santa Fe Community College with U of Florida maybe? My old community college had an agreement with UCF.... If you don't march Drum Corps, I think its an experience you need... look I'm done with this subject.... you can feel whatever you want to....
  16. As with any statement, this is not 100% true, but the vast majority of high school graduates aren't ready to take the reigns of a program. You are defending the minority, when it's the majority i'm speaking of. I understand that if you march in one of the highest level High School groups you might not need the experience... but that is BY FAR the exception and not the rule. High School bands by far and large is a past time activity. MOST bands in America don't delve into the finer idiosyncrasies of marching and movement. They have barely enough time to teach kids their spots in the drill and the music. I also believe anyone with a music background could be a BRASS caption head like you say.... I think thats awesome.... Good music is good music and brass technique SHOULD remain constant from Drum Corps to the outside music world. But to be a band director you need to teach marching as well, and In MY opinion i feel someone should have a little more experience then the 4 years they did High School Marching Band. The Best way to learn something is by doing, and doing it a lot.
  17. well it obviously doesn't... that why they have classes that teach how to teach it.... but if the highest level of marching you have done was a high school marching band... then you dont even know how to do it yourself.
  18. the only schools i know that FORCE people into band are music EDUCATION majors.... how can you teach marching band if you haven't been in marching band after high school?
  19. As an Alumnus of the Band of Blue, Thanks! In my opinion we are the best band for the amount of time we rehearse.... 3 days a week for an hour and a half.... we are just loaded with a lot of talent (see: two collegiate Pasic championships in the two times we have competed) We are also probably the best unknown band.... fortunately since our football team is getting better, you might be seeing and hearing us more... P.S. its rare for a Band of Blue Halftime to get less applause then the home team at our away games. For those of you unaware of the Band of Blue. here is the 2000 show at Contest of Champions (a long running high school marching band competition that MTSU holds) Band of Blue 2004 MTSU Pasic line

  21. OMG, the model inthe picture is one of my fraternity Bros.... he marched scouts and rooked out in 2005 on trumpet. It looks really good... i really like it.
  22. The problem is with the current medium that CD's are limited to. you can fit around 80 minutes on a CD so if they record the whole thing it'll take more discs so expect to spend more money.
  23. the SW at the end of the 2000 show comes out of nowhere and is HELLA sweet. the crowd goes pretty crazy for it as well.
