  2. I don't think there is any true correct answer to this question. I know when I joined Reilly which was exactly 4 years ago Dec. 20th. I remember a couple of the really old timers weren't so pleased. Yet I think now they realized the importance that younger members, are what will be keeping the corps around for the long haul. In my personal opinion. They only instance that kids under 18 should be allowed in alumni corps is when they are over 15 and one or both parents are already vetern active members of the corps. In my opinion. I'll be hanging my shingle at Reilly until I'm pushing up daisies.
  3. I'm an ebay powerseller, and I've been shipping with fedex for about 5 almost 6 years now. They aren't perfect. You have to be a mega packager to ship with them. In the past few years they only damaged a couple items. They put a forklift through a monitor, and broke the glass on a pachinko machine. Mouthpieces I always ship USPS Priority mail in a #4 Priority Box. They never get damaged packed in them. Unless something insane happens to it. Tuba's depending on the size I normally get a little better rates from DHL. I recently shipped a Sousaphone to Tucson From Here in PA. Cost about 70 bucks, and insured for $1000. They are a bit more gentle than Greyhound for huge stuff. To me it sounds like it may have gotten damaged prior to shipment. or was poorly padded.
  4. LOL I know Some of their guys are a bit slow on the upchuck. A few years ago I asked for some parts for a K-90 Contra, and I might as well asked them to find a Fart in a Jacuzzi.. Some of the folks in kanstul's parts sales are like that too. Totally clueless. And If you're reading Charles, No Offence! But you know I'm right!
  5. Its F---ing eBay.. --Mr Powerseller--
  6. My Corps needs two Kanstul "G" 3 Valve Soprano's Have any of them for sale??
  7. My Kanstul 3 Valve Prototype has Wicked Thick Plating on it. Non Peeling. But my god its heavy compared to the later horns. That thing has a good 10- 14 pounds on the Later Grandes' I don't know how they managed to march with that.
  8. All king bugles were poorly plated. I see a lot of them get peely and heavy wear patterns.
  9. I asked Dr. Crush who runs the Tubachristmas in Philly and he said it would be alright with him If I brought it next year. Thanks Tubadon For the Parts.
  10. I'm bringing my fiberglass Buescher Sousaphone ::Waits for gasps:: to Philadelphia TC-05. Last one I attended was in 1999. Believe it or not, that sousa, plays amazingly well. I feel in love with the valve action, so much so that I sold my Conn Cavalier Brass 14K sousaphone -I'm Still waiting for money on- Comparing the two. The Conn has a little warmer tone, but the intonation is nothing to praise about, same with the valves. The Buescher wins hands down. The valves are light and fast, and the intonation is remarkable. I played a Selmer Signet in High school which is identical to the Buescher, and that was a piece of crap. This thing was a total sleeper. I bought it planning to just do a couple repairs and resell for a quick turnaround. Best thing about the Buesher I can take it through the car wash.. LOL "Spray wax please." Maybe next year I'll tranpose all the music out so I can use my Kanstul Contra. But the sousa is a little easier on the back, The Contra is pushing 38 pounds :Prototype: The Sousa is like 15 lbs. 17lbs with the mouthpiece. Plus it doesn't dent.. The Best $77.25 and hour & a half drive I spent this year. Thanks eBay!
  11. The King K-80 Euph is a nice horn. My guy will repair it back to playing condition if its reasonably complete. Both Pistons there, no missing slides or major parts. Call the guys up at www.thebandroom.biz. You can ship it to them for an estimate. If you don't like what he tells you the most it costs you is the shipping. Be sure to tell them Pat Hollins suggested them. They are a little slow right now, so it would be a faster turn around for you. I march parades with the Kanstul 3 Valve Euphonium. It isn't as balanced as the king. The Kanstul is a little bell heavy. The Contra wasn't what I would call overhauled. It was demangled, and cleaned up. The Labor was 300 dollars for the dent work, and that included a chem clean, felts, springs and corks. I bought a new mouthpipe from Kanstul, since it was MIA. I'm into the horn with a new Pro-Tec Bag for about a grand or so. Still cheaper than the 6600 for a new one from Kanstul. By the way, this is a Prototype Like the other horn I sold a few months ago on here. My guess is this horn was made in the 1984 - 1986 Range. Charles can correct me if I'm wrong. :-) So it is about 20 years old. It is also MUCH heavier than the newer contra's Jerry my repair tech mentioned that the brass on my horn is super thick and heavy, Quoting. "It's like old Besson Brass." Also mention the excessive amount of cursing it took taking the dents out of the horn. A lot of disrespect caused this horn to become practically scrap. Its a passion of mine to see horns like this get the proper repairs, and a home that it will be taken care of for years to come. This horn I hope will serve me well in the Reilly Raiders for many years to come. Yes I'll miss the 2 year old Corps Issued Kanstul But now I have my own Contra.
  12. The Helleberg Design dates from what I remember 1905 - 1910 Made By Conn for the Helleberg Brothers of Sousa's marching Band. Or something like that. Since Miraphone has only been around since 1946 they are doing the copying or their own variation of the helleberg. The C4 is a great mouthpiece, but better for indoor work on a rotory valved horn. Not exactly a great marching mouthpiece. I'll make you jealous with the fresh pics of my Contra fresh from the Shop after 3 months in the shop. The shop that did the work is www.thebandroom.biz Before: AFTER:: You could stick two fingers in between this joint before!
  13. I know Reilly won't ever be the same without Bobby. Thanks Bobby for all the shots and beers we shared, and the memories that will last me for the rest of my life.
  14. What the Heck MAN!! Just Because I'm 350lbs and use a 1 - 1/4H On my Euph. It gives every fat guy euph/Contra with donkey lips a reputation! LOL And its a Helleberg for Contra Funny enough you mention a Miraphone C3/C4 which are Helleberg Copies/Slight variation on the Helleberg's design.
  15. Try www.1800usaband.com They might have cases for it. If they don't list any on the site. give them a call they just might have a nice used one laying around they'll sell you.
  16. Everytime I call they give me an attitude like they are doing me some big favor. That's why I don't deal with them. I'll give my money to someone who doesn't need to get off by talking to me like they're the only place around to get stuff from.
  17. Although the large mouthpieces sound freakin awesome. They're almost total overkill. So tuning issues should be expected. The mouthpiece in a lot of cases makes or breaks the sound of a horn. Using a radically different mouthpiece is going to give you a radically different tuning curve. With low brass the mouthpiece you use really does effect the horn. Small brass its more a preferance of feel, range, and types of music being played. Mouthpieces on small brass generally don't effect the tuning curve. With Low Brass you can have lets say a sousaphone that plays fantastic with a Bach 18. Yet you use it in your King Marching Tuba, and its too big and you lips have to work extra hard to make it work. And you find a 24AW to let you play the king a little better. With Low brass everything is based on bore, overall length, severity of the bows (how tight the pipes are bent.), how free blowing the horn is before you jam a mouthpiece into it. I believe Kanstul reccomended mouthpiece for the Euphonium is a 6 1/2AL Large Shank. Which in my opinion is very small and doesn't give enough sound or control. I think (Never tried) a Bach 2G would be the best overall mouthpiece for this horn. From the size guide I formed this judgement. What I use is totally huge and no one else in my corps except me can play on it. But then again I'm used to using a Conn-Helleberg 7B on my Contra which isn't all that much larger. My fellow Parade euphonium Player is using a Wick 4AL or 5AL. I don't like the feel, and its a little small for the horn, the low end just isn't there.
  18. Your lips isn't strong enough to handle it yet. That could be why you're play flat. I'm a contra playing on a Helleberg 7B, and I goto the euph and I'm normally a little sharp when I first start playing.
  19. Call Kanstul They'll hook you up with a beautiful new horn that will play very well. I played on one of the horns they made for a couple of the guys earlier this year in my corps. Piece of Art! Beautiful Horn. Don't bother with a deg.
  20. Amados are a decent replacment on high brass. However they tend to stick terrible until they wear in, can take 10 years to wear in.. No joke! And they aren't a good replacement for low brass, they are just too small. Some repair shops are using a rubber product now. But I don't find it to be that great. They don't seal/seat well. Cork works great all around. To keep the cork good you can rub a little tuning slide grease on it to keep it flexable. Average life out of corks are 3 - 5 years. I wouldn't go much longer than that without replacing them. Even if they look, and seal good. When they get old they will let you down when you need it the most. For do it yourself parts, and repairs if your local shop won't touch your bugle try. www.thebandroom.biz He does some great work! My Old marching bone is on his repair pictures page. In his eBay store they carry all kinds of parts and good stuff. I've shipped about 4 horns so far to him. A couple trumpets, the marching bone, and my personal contra. Everything always comes back absolutely beautiful.
  21. That 1 1/4H King I have is Made in Germany. At least the package it came in said that. I got it from ebay user mouthpieceexpress when you look at the feedback in the upper right you'll see a button marked contact member. Shoot them an email Last I heard he still had some left. I think I paid 30 bucks for mine after shipping. It was cheap I know that.
  22. Yes this horn is Sold. A Thank You goes out to those that had a serious interest in it. Pat
  23. Currently This is what I use Contra: Kanstul G Conn-Helleberg 7B Thinking of Switching to an OLDS 14 Sousaphone Mouthpiece. About the same cup. Little smaller bore and a softer rim. Maybe if I got it the bore opened a little I'd switch. I love the helleberg, but the sharp rim after extended playing 2 + hours straight can really dig into my top lip, Euph: Kanstul G King/Germany 1 1/4H Most of the Bari's I know use: bach or Kanstul 6 1/2AL bach 5GS Megatone and a couple use Schilke 51D's One of the lead Bari's use a Bellaire Dynamic Trombone mouthpiece. Its Tiny.
