  2. Ivan Rutherford (Cadets perc. alumni)..famous broadway actor (Jean Valjean in Les Miserables, and other roles) BG

  6. (1) Fans are not going to react evenly to all performances, and I think it is wrong to expect fans to jump to their feet for a show that doesn't move them. I was there, and I didn't stand for all performances. I did clap, but not evenly, for all. There were some very moving performances......Phantom seemed quite effective with the crowd, and I didn't see anyone sitting or not clapping whwe I was sitting. I marched in 2 finals and tought many years (including some titles). If the crowd didn't respond big time, we knew that we had some problems, and added effect. If a program isn't moving the fans, perhaps the designers should look in the mirror to place blame. Today, shows lacking in effect many times are not fixed, becahse the effect caption is nothing but another performance caption anyway. Yes, I do feel sorry for the kids busting their tails on a show that doesn't get it done, but that also is a life lesson. (2) When fans boo, I honestly feel they are booing the judged results and not any corps. If they didn't feel the judges did a good job, I don't have a problem with it. It is the only moment where fans can communicate if they are not happy with the results. Fans at sports events boo when a ref makes a bad call...what's different here? As a member and staffer, I always wanted to know how the fans felt about our show, and I could take it if they weren't excited about us or felt others were better. That's part of competition. I didn't hear anyone booing a corps performance at Foxboro......only some boos on some scores/placements. This also happens at other subjective events such as gymnastics, skating, etc....again, they are not booing a performance, but the judged results. This is America, and I feel the fans have the right to boo results which they don't think are right. I do agree with you that no corps should be booed....these are good kids who have busted their tail....but I'm not going to jump up and down for a show that didn't get it done.....that's life...............
  7. I returned late last night from Mass.....here is my finals review. General....good crowd.......muggy night, and show was interupted a bit due to weather threats....they did not prevail, and the show went on. One minor complaint....$25 a day to park at the stadium.....I realize DCI probably had no say, and I know it is $35 for Patriot Games...still outrageous (it was $10 at Denver last year). Great stadium. Spirit....controlled job, decent visual design, and good execution across the board. Show is "nice" but is a bit lacking on the impact/excitement side, IMO. Glassmen...interesting take on New World....some I liked, some I didn't. I also think this show has some lulls in it musically. Decent visual design, and decent in performance captions. Blue Knights....forte is visual design and performance. Music is interesting in places, but did not generate enough excitement for me. They performed well in all captions. Santa Clara....musical book is very well written, and they played their best job of the week at finals. Yes, the drill is not up to contender level, but it wasn't terrible, either. Hornline had a fine sound. Percussion was competent, but perhaps a safer book then previous years, and I did have some voice clarity issues. They marched much better than they did in quarterfinals, and they deserved to jump past Boston. If they retain members, they will be right back in the hunt next year. Boston....performed well in all captions. There are some moments in the first third, then the show goes a bit downhill. I don't quite understand why they select music that has had legendary arrangements/performances, and then do it in a way that can't hold a candle to those (ie Candide....SCV/Cadets....Ode to Joy..Phantom....) Placed correctly in 9th. Crown....great horn sound.blend/balance/power....it was all there. Arrangements are well-written and musical. Perhaps percussion doesn't get as much credit because they are not as "flashy" as others, but they are very musical and their book fits the brass like a glove...I don't think they get full credit for that....Decent visual program.....I felt they should have been a bit closer in score to Scouts/Bluecoats/Blue Devils...... Bluecoats....really turned on and excecuted a very tough show. My only complaint is I think a few of the endings could have been tweaked to make them better. Percussion book was very tough and they played it well....I had them in 4th. Scouts...........strong job.....I think Bluecoats perc. book was just a tad tougher and they were overall just a bit cleaner........that said, this was still a very entertaining show with strength in all captions.......arrangements worked, although I would have liked to heard them let it rip a bit more..... Devils.....arrangements were poor/fragmented in many places...a two-note fragment repeating umpteen times.....lack of melodic content......tons of isolated hits....other than a few park and blows, this book didn't work, and their 19+ music effect score baffles me.........visual book not among the best....they finished 4th but belonged in the 6th-8th range in my opinion....performance levels were strong, but the poor members had no car to drive here. Phantom.........most successful book on the field....fan friendly/accesible...extremely well-written and performed, but plenty of difficulty present to be competitive........I thought they should have won brass.......percussion was strong/musical, as was visual program. I thought placement was correct but score should have been closer to top......... Cavaliers....I liked their book, too. Playing more than in past years, and the jazz was very well done, with some great phrasing. Great visual program.......solid performance all the way around. I had them 2nd, but closer........ Cadets....most demanding book/visual program......percussion and guard were top shelf with no equals.....brass was very good, but not flawless, and I thought Phantom had a fuller sound/better tone quality......Musically, there are parts of the show that are a bit out there, but they play alot and play very well...exection across the board was great, especially when you factor demand....I would not have had them tops in music effect, but would have in visual effect.........I agree with the win, but the score and spread were both too high. It was a fun season!
  8. If I just read right, parking at Gillette Stadium is a lofty $25 per show (Denver was $10 last year if I remember).........Is this correct? If so, does anyone know if there are other non-stadium lots or even on-street, even if it's a bit of a hike? I don't feel like shelling out $75 to park.......
  9. I think at QF I will count how many times he says "Yowza' in the BD show......it's got to be alot..........it would be good if they lost a tenth in GE for each time, then they would get the 15 in music effect this show earns.....anybody have an intermittent extension cord (lol)???
  10. I said in my post that most, if not all....but I am certain at least 20 of 24 corps or more, had those types of openings.....and they've become very predictable..................no biggie...I will actually count at quarterfinals (lol)....
  11. I saw every open corps at Allentown......one thing I have noticed about programming......nearly every (if not every if I remember correctly)corps starts their show either.... (1) slow (2) soft (3) backfield (4) fast, but quiet (4) percussion Also, sometimes these "beginnings" seem quite long to get going.......... Why do I bring it up? It actually has become somewhat predictable......Imagine if the drum major conducted 4 fast, quiet counts and the corps turned and "hit it" on all 8 cylinders immediately.....SURPRISE!!!!!! My point is that you don't have to stick to the above predictable formula.........a "unique start" will grab your audience's attention more than what has been done to death.......just an observation.........
  12. (1) every year since 89 (2) they have been getting the scores they have earned, and I don't expect that to change (3) overall package is not quite up to snuff, and only a hot performance and a subpar one by Spirit would get them in..I would call it a 50-1 shot (4) you mention Colts...there program is potential top 12, but performance-wise wasn't there Saturday, and the percussion is not up to snuff (5) Capital and Mandarins aren't even in the same league..........
  13. Here is my review of Allentown...both nights..... General....good crowd Fri. night, much bigger crowd Sat. night.....shows ran smoothly....miss the full corps retreat, but understand both sides..... Cadets......very demanding show handled well...percussion and guard are stellar....brass is solid, but not at the level of number being given, as there are still some minor quality issues, especially in mellos.....visual effect is strong, but still some room for improvement in execution, so I don't see the 19's there yet, either...they deserved to win tonight, but the score was too high, especially the effect numbers, and Phantom should be closer........ Cavaliers....great show.....stunning visual....I heard complaints written about the ladders, but I think they use them to great effect....staging high-rise horns, and some high velocity drill around them......the musical book this year is well-written, accessible, and they play very well...they could open impacts a bit more....best pit in DCI.....Cadets show is more difficult overall, but this show is more effective musically IMO, and IMO cleaner in visual and brass....we will see.... Phantom.....wonderful musical product....arrangements work well and are much more accessible...the hornline plays very well and has some extreme demands...check out the sopranos in a few places......the show has the necessary difficulty....brass line has wider dynamic range then Cadets and IMO outplayed them tonight.....they have some room for cleaning all the way around, so they are by no means out of it....crowd favorite tonight........... Blue Devils........strong corps performance-wise with a music book/arrangements that do not work....continuity, complete with narration and 100 "Yowza's" is so bad it's laughable......this is a perfect example of a corps that should be getting 18-19 in performance and 15-16 in effect, but that won't happen. Still, this program is lacking and comes off as nothing more than a guard show with accompaniment....Downey seems to have come up dry in recent years.....I certainly respect his work, but play Channel One on your system and then this stuff, and my case is closed. if other corps perform up to snuff , this show doesn't belong in the top 5 due to poor arrangements/effect, and I can see as low as 8th. Madison.....fine job tonight....competent in all sections, fine soloists, good arrangements, excitement......perc./visual problems of the past are gone...I think they could push some hits a bit more and still maintain their excellent quality....perhaps saving it for this week?? Definitely far better than Devils and still has room to grow IMO Bluecoats.....tight job with their best show ever IMO.....perc. book very exposed and very well played, and ditto in brass....endings could use tweaking and they could open up a few more places...no weaknesses.....this is a better product than BD.......... Crown....great job....horn sound is wonderful and book is well-arranged....full, balanced, in-tune, great method......perc. is musical, although perhaps not as "flashy" as other lines.....solid visual program....I felt they were underscored a bit, and should now be up closer to Bluecoats and may also pass Blue Devils..... Santa Clara....I was surprised......I felt their musical book was very good, and generally well-performed.....solid power out of the brass.....some sections still not quite clean, but they play....percussion is musical....ok, drill is not up to Cavs/Cadets level, but it's not horrible, either......this corps plays rings around Boston musically, so at least 8th is in order...whether they go further is a question mark.... Boston.......they perform well in all captions, and the visual program is good. The musical arrangements, however, are choppy and lacking in continuity and substance....their Candide arrangement is nowhere close in quality to that of prior SCV/Cadets corps. I see this program in 9th.....period. Blue knights....visual design/performance is their strongpoint....they are solid in brass and perc. (although still some minor perf. issues), but the book is a bit abstract and also seems to have some continuity problems....10-12 range Glassmen....interesting take on New World....they are proficient in all captions....not strong enough to move above 10th....10-12 range Spirit.......they showed good control/performance in all captions...the show is "nice"...not real exciting, but it works....their performance levels and decent visual design earns them a finalist spot, and they will be in 10-12 range Crossmen.....musical book is fun, but charts don't allow for a high level of expression in generalm and they don't do enough of it in the ballad where there is room......musical performance is decent, and drumline has come along....visual package not up to snuff compared to others....guard has improved.....it will take a near perfect job and a sub-par job by someone else for them to make finals, so it's a real longshot................ Colts.....good package, and visual design is their strength....had brass/ensemble performance problems tonight, with some very noticeable blend/intonation problems.......perc. book/performance not up to snuff compared to others....music book itself is not bad, but performance-wise I don't see them catching up.......14th Seattle: there is demand in all segments, and some good impacts...however, the program has too many lulls in the musical arrangements, and far too much narration, which doesn't work.....they are proficient but not quite finalist level....15-17 Southwind....I didnlt like the brass performance at all today (intonation, tone quality, articulation) , but it didn't show up in their score......they have a decent corps, but the musical book seems lacking....it looks like they are a sure bet for semis, but I didn't see it in their performance today........we'll see......17-21 Capital Regiment.....serious brass blend/intonation problems at this show....perc. is competent......another somewhat abstract show that just doesn't connect with the audience......there is demand in all segments....good, but not stellar performance levels.......16-21 Pioneer......I thought they had a pretty good horn sound and competent percussion....book wasn't bad and had moments...ditto with visual package.....17-21 Mandarins.....I didn't get this show getting a 79....I think it was a 75 at best....major brass performance problems.....the ensemble and effect judge obviously picked it up, but I don't know where the 16.7 in brass came from as even a 15 there was a gift...visual package is ok, but show is not effective, especially the second half...they have moments, but there is not a caption which is particularly strong....18-22 Magic..........these guys are getting dumped on....1st really solid horn sound of the night.....good blend, balance, and power......brass performance score was on....musically, they are more solid than given credit for, and they have an enjoyable book.....what's up with the music effect number?? Visual program is not finalist level both book-wise and performance, but I feel a bit better than the number given......I feel they could be15th, Yet I don't even know if they will make semis....... Pacific Crest..........they had some solid moments, and some shaky ones......I think if they want to become more competitive, they will have to tour more, but I also understand their philosophy and also it is not cheap to travel from California....they have decent size, talent and programming, but I feel they would do a few notches better if they went with a more accessible musical book.....semis is a possibility.....16-20....... Esperanza....they performed decently.....like Crest's problem, I think they need to consider playing a more accessible book....they have some talent to grow with... 18-22 Troopers..........enjoyable musical book....execution hurts them, and horns had a bad day.........decent percussion.......glad to see them around, and hope they grow someday in the near future.........23 Kiwanis.....very small, but worked hard........drumline was decent today.....horns had problems....ambitious drill for small group.....some good musical moments, but a simpler book may have worked better.........again, glad to see them around and hope they grow...........24 I look forward to Foxboro!!
  14. Just a sidebar question here..........does anybody know who holds the record for most consecutive wins....both DCI and pre-DCI era....and also seniors? Just curious................
  15. I voted Bluecoats because I saw them for the first time last night, and in my opinion they have their best corps ever....I was surprised........
  16. Here is my review of the West Chester show.............. general......very hot evening......good crowd.....West Chester Univ. stadium (my alma mater).....field was dry and not in good shape..needs new sod....you would think they would get that with the both the level of band program and also a football team that made National Semifinals in NCAA Div. II....... Jersey Surf.......healthy size corps......some good impacts....solid division II corps.....I thought arrangements were a bit choppy, but there are good moments, too......some individuals struggling on this hot night.......... Mandarins.......they've come along way from a small division III corps......they have some decent performance in all segments, but there were some major problems in brass in terms of quality, expecially articulation....drumline was ok, but staged too deep far too often........show went downhill musically from an emotional standpoint..............ne: 75........judges 79.............. Blue Knights.......had some brass quality issues at lower volumes and some individual quality issues......drumline gave a strong job tonight.....visual is this corps strength...........musical book has momnets, but still lacks musical continuity, as so many books today do..........me:84........judges.........86 Crossmen..........also had some individual brass problems at times....drumline much improved from early season.......endings are much improbed.....had feeling they were holding back and perhaps just trying to be clean.....guard also is much improved.....I agree that visual book overall isn't up to snuff and the show is better musically then visually......that said, I don't think they are out of it yet....when I saw Spirit earlier, I felt this show is better musically overall and Spirit is better visually overall, so I expect a dogfight next week...........me 81....judges 83 Bluecoats.........the surprise of the night for me...........truly strong brass performance job tonight, and in fact I thought right there with Cadets........they have a great blend and they play very controlled with good quality. I could use a bit more impact on endings, which they are still capable of.............I think tweaking the endings could push this show up a notch.....I also thought the visual staging was excellent and the percussion section was stellar, and playing alot. IMO the best Bluecoats have ever been, and I am curious to see how they stack up next week...............me: 90 judges: 91 Cadets: drumline and guard were stellar tonight....hornline was good but not stellar throughout the program.........intense musical and visual demands on all performers....quick tempos....many notes......end of show doesn't make it for me, and I am still having trouble getting into all of the musical book......drumline and guard are absolutely stellar..........I highly question the musical effect score, whcih is a problem that I have with DCI judging....it's just another performance caption, nothing more..............me.....93...........judges 96............... General....to the judges.....is their a justifiable reason that you go out of control with the numbers in the last 2 weeks, even if the performance given doesn't merit astronomical scores? Please consider what a 19 should mean before you shell them out.....we don't have to have obligatory 98's every year............ Thanks for reading.........onward to Allentown tommorrow night.........good night!
  17. In general I agree with you. In 1977, Canada's Oakland Crusaders won percussion in prelims, but failed to make finals. Whereas I do think we have seen an improvement this year in caption integrity, there is still room for more. Eliminating seedings and having random draw appearance orders could help. DCI Buffalo was a classic example of what I think you are getting at. As the visual/design/overall ranking went, so did the captions. The top 5-6 corps finished in the top 6 caption-wise with a monopoly "reserved space" nearly across the board....I remember it well.....and there were some huge question marks I had with those results being that way that year....especially in music effect and brass. I still think the largest caption problem bar none is music effect.....for example, we have a few corps already in the 18-19 range already who have arrangements/performances that are not working from an effect standpoint....almost seems like just another performance caption. There should be far more to effect than just being clean. Either judge EFFECT or change the name of the caption. WE have a few corps right now, who IMO, should be getting 18 in performance captions and 15-16 in effect. That will never happen. Last year, IMO, SCV and Phantom both had far more meat in the musical book and far more music effect than Cavs or BD, yet look at the results. I wasn't the only one who felt that way. We also have the same slotting going on as has been the case for many years now. We have corps suddenly getting 19''s (95%+) in captions and there are still 2 weeks to go, and rest assured the pre-required 98's will come at nationals, earned or not. The top 5, all with a shot earlier on, is now the top 2.....deserved?? I don't know. You can also drive a truck through the gap from 12th - 13/14....is the top 12 a done deal at this point?? I think randomizing appearance order and totally overhauling/re-evaluating the music effect caption would make for improvement.
  18. I will say I agree with your rant about shows not being done in time for the season. Frankly, I think corps are attempting difficult drills that demand too much time, and they aren't hitting June ready. I also have to say that I do not share your other opinions. In my opinion, great music/arrangements STAND ON THEIR OWN, and I will run to hear a great musical standstill performance. Great drill can stand on it's own, too. If we go back to the "old days" to say, 27th Lancers....they weren't the greatest musically, but they had some great visual programs. However, I wouldn't have walked across the street to hear the standstill, except maybe for the drum solo. Cavies have dominated in recent years, but I question their music effect scores......they have generally been tremendous visually, and they excecute their musical program, but the vast majority of their effect has been visual, and not music. I would agree that it is great when we get BOTH, but it's happening less and less. If you are saying that you have to see the show to appreciate the music, I will reply that something is lacking in the musical arrangement/performance. I will reserve my opinion on this year's musical products after I see everyone next week, as I have only been to one major show thusfar. However, I can give two examples.....Boston plays Candide this year....it's too slow, doesn't generate much excitement, and can't hold a candle arrangement-wise to SCV or Cadets from the past. The arrangement, IMO, doesn't work, and falls far short of expectations. The Cadets this year have music that has many extremely fast passages and a very difficult drill. They are great performers, but I can't even remember one melody/musical passage or phrase from the show. Thus, for me, the show has something missing.....yet they will win, because it's the hardest thing out there and they are going to nail it. Also, this may be "old school", but IMO, you write a great musical arrangement THAT WORKS first, and then attempt to write a great visual program that presents that music. Too many corps are trying to write a visual idea and then make the music fit it, as opposed to vice-versa, and what you have is a choppy musical arrangement that no longer has continuity or works. In regards to your comments about movie scores.........I don't need to see the movie to be moved by the movie music scores of John Williams. He is the most prolific writer of music for movies in the world because he writes great music, time after time. His music enhances the movie....fortunately, it's been paired with some pretty good movies, but his music can STAND ON IT'S OWN. Danny Elfman is pretty good, too. Too many musical corps shows today, IMO, fall far short, not in quality of performance, but quality of the arrangement itself. Until that shows up in the scores, we will continue to see a trend toward "drill with musical accompaniment".
  19. Four of the 9 judges who judged Murfeesboro on Friday night are also judging Saturday night at Indianapolis. Is that really the best thing?? It is doubtful that the corps are going to make/introduce any major changes from Fri. to Sat. (although possible), and the only variance is how well they perform on the two nights. The judges are human, and chances are that if the performances between the two nights are comparable, the judge is going to have a high tendency to produce very similar results and have a similar opinion. The judge is certainly going to carry their opinion about the arrangements/design/and effectiveness of the written program from one night to the next, but a "new face' may have a different opinion the next night. Having nearly half of the same panel on back to back nights for the same corps does not foster movement or growth. On the other hand, I feel they should have a completely new panel, and perhaps some judges that have not seen the corps for a few weeks or more. A "fresh' look, and perhaps not necessarily the same opinions as the night before, seems to make more sense, especially for 2 of the biggest shows of the year on consecutive nights.
  20. I have been involved in the junior corps activity for thirty years. always been against any kind of seeding in any show. I think it promotes slotting. There are also some problems involving the judge's tools. For example, if two corps go on back to back, are very, very close in the caption in the opinion of the judge, but there are several corps left, the judge may be forced to put a bigger spread than is deserved between the two, to allow room for any others who may rank in the same area or between those two. For example, let's say there are 6 groups that perform between an 83 percentile and 85 That only leaves the judge between a 166 and 170 to fit them (ie 5 numbers....not enough), and the order of appearance compounds problems even more. Now, add a zero, and give the judge 2000 points. He now has FORTY numbers to use between those percentages. The problem is eliminated, and the order of appearance is not a factor. Order of appearance by random draw assures (1) a more even audience for all competitors. (2) The judge will work harder, as there is no way the judge can simply apply any kind of smooth upwad curve, or "take lightly" the first few performances. The judge has to focus on the sheet/boxes harder, and also has to review and consider every corps that has performed before ranking. Maybe a corps has a hot caption but is not a contender........do they really deserve to lose positions in that caption because they went on early, or a score that is too low, even if ranked correctly, because the judge had to "leave room"? ? I know that there are some who say that the 12th place corps going on after the champion is going to make them look bad. Not necessarily. In the long run, that 12th place corps is going to become better as a result of this....they have been placed on even turf, and they are going to work hard to prove to the audience that they are quite respectable. Where a corps places in the quarters or semis should have no bearing on their score or placement in finals. At championships. I am in favor of the 1988 system where prelim scores of the finalists were not announced and the finals judges did not have access to those numbers, either. In fact, I don't think the finals judges should even be in attendance at quarters/semis. Not knowing, along with random appearance orders, will increase the possibility of major moves (up or down) between qualifying rounds and finals.... a judge is not going to know that he just gave 1st in a caption to a group that was 5th, or they put the prelim winner in 5th place in their caption in finals. I know that I am in the minority here, and there are many who are happy with the way things are. I would like to hear other opinions, both those who agree and don't agree. Bob
  21. Totally agreed......Rondo definitely belongs in the Hall of Fame. While we are at it, legendary corps photographer Moe Knox, and legendary audio engineer of DCI Championships Ken Kobold also are deserving. Bob
  22. It's funny that in no time at all, I see some really good suggestions here for music for corps to consider, yet in the past several years I have seen corps attempt to rehash some classics that have already been done extremely well, and fall far, far short..... here are some that I have..... Tchaikovsky Suite No. 3 Finale....... Dvorak Slavonic Dance No. 8 in G minor Pavanne by Faure/Woody Herman It would be cool to compile these and mass email them to the offices of the corps....actually, not a bad idea.....maybe I will try...........but, will they listen?
  23. If I sounded negative on Crown, I'm not. What I meant was that some of the fans may not relate to Crown's music...I did relate to it, though, and it is well written/arranged. (I can't believe Boston is now beating them, as Boston has serious arrangement problems, in my opinion...no matter how well they execute...) I also did mention that I felt that effect could determine how Cadets do at the end of the year. and I had trouble grabbing onto their total book, although I respect the demand of the show, and I still hold to that, and the fact that effect is the worst judged caption in DCI.
