  1. Too bad George Wong's oriental food won't be available. I used to the love the LA Odyssey Classic show with the wonderful Chinese food! Have a couple of posters from the late 70's and 80's shows. Or head over to Jack Bevins old digs on Minerva place and make scrambled eggs with Bac'os. Oh Jack!! BTW, any sightings of Sandy Turner, VK guard captain of the late 70's? Or Bill Turner (mello and horn instructor) for that matter? Or my favorite gal, Arlene Ball? Can't help but think of these folks with DCI in Socal.
  2. As much as I enjoyed Spartacus in 81, I enjoyed the 2nd version in 82 much more. I still have 1/2 dozen librettos that they passed out before the shows. Pretty cool souvenir. Still wished they would have done it last year or this year being the 25 year anniversary of those shows
  3. It's always better to foster over-concern than under-concern. If the kids are reading this...take your host out for pizza. Thanks Mike. But no chance of that happenning. I got one thank you the entire summer and that was from the gal a month after the season ended.
  4. I agree partly with you, but there is no way the door opened on it's own. I know that for a fact and the gal I talked with knows that also. If you've seen my doors, you have to forcefully close them or open them on your own. And this year they are not PAYING to get their butts kicked. So don't ASSUME that they paid. I PAID all of their fees out of my pocket. So that is not part of the equation in this case. I'm not questioning their drive and determination as opposed to somebody watching TV at home all summer. Never have. And I never said I expected any kid to be an adult. But we are not talking 15 or 16 year olds. We are talking 21 year olds that all LIVE on their own back home. I know the position they are in. But they are also guests in my house and they are not paying a single dime to the corps or myself this year courtesy of me. They have to realize they are putting my life and ID on the line when they make this kind of mistake. Again, not a broken glass or a light on or the TV left on during the day... A house left open for anybody to walk into. And folks in these areas have been robbed while they are at home. So don't defend them entirely without knowing the full story. So unless you're here, you wouldn't know the entire situation. And I'm not worried a TV stolen but 10-15 thousand dollars of valuable equipment I own. Not a cheap $1500 TV set. It's your kind of stupidity that would make me want to kick them out. Don't tell me what I need and not need to do. You have not been in this situation. I did handle this in a calm and mature manner if you would have read the opening post!!
  5. That idea did enter my mind. I'm trying show a little trust here though that this was a one time slip up. Still one time too many. And the saving grace was nothing was touched. But silvertrombone, you're right. I doubt this would have occured in their dorm rooms or apartment.
  6. Not a bad idea, but I was still trying to calm myself down in an hour before they got home.
  7. Yes and too bad for me, the neighbors around me are not home either the majority of the day. But you did give me a idea as to have a friend who lives about a mile away to try and come by and see that the house is locked. Thanks
  8. WIDE OPEN as in open the screen door and help yourself in.
  9. Well, wait until this happens in your home and see what your reaction and your emotions will be. That is, if you even house kids. If you would have read a little closer, I didn't say it WAS the corps fault, but that the all days that are taking a toll on them which I have noticed have made them a little sloppy. Nothing too big mind you, a light left on overnight, food left out, a broken dish... these are not major issues. Leaving somebody's home unlocked for 13 hours is a major issue. It is an incident like this that has me thinking I will never house again after this year. I cannot have this happen again. But I am showing faith and trust in these kids that this was a one time occurence on their part.
  10. Okay as some of you may know, I house three kids in for a D1 corps. This is their 2nd year in my home and for the most part, everything has been fine. I don't personally have any kids marching but I thought it would be a nice gesture and a way to give back to a corps who I had no local ties with. That is until a couple of years ago by housing and doing some volunteering. But something happened today that nearly put my future and my life at risk. The way the situation is, I leave for work about 1/2 hour before they head off to all days. There really is no other option for me at work to come in a little later. I am single and have no kids of my own. I have enough trust in these kids that I have supplied them with their own set of keys to the house. Sometimes I work a 15 hour day and they make it home before I do and they have their own vehicles as well. They leave their cars at my house all summer which is not a problem as long as they leave me their keys so I can move them around my driveway i.e. lawnwork, a furniture truck, whatever. Well, I leave this morning, say my goodbyes and good luck for the day and drive off as my car is parked next to theirs. Today was a 13 hour workday for me. Get home at 8:30PM to have a hour to prepare dinner and what do I encounter as I come up to my front porch? They left the front door completely WIDE OPEN when they left this morning. I can't tell you the nervousness and emotions that went thru me as I went in my house. Went to each room and yelled out to see if anybody was around( maybe one was ill and came home for the day early, I was hoping) Nope. Nobody home and my house was unlocked for 13 hours and I'm not in the best or worst neighborhood in town, but the fact that anybody could have and somehow luckily didn't invade my home. I'm talking, computers, laptops, cell phones, digital cameras, stereo equipment, credit cards, bank info, musical instruments a little emergency money stashed away and their personal belongings to boot. But the kicker was, the keys to one of the kids cars was left on my kitchen table with the logos on the keys and the car sitting on my driveway. Neither the door lock or the deadbolt was locked. The door was left WIDE OPEN!! I wanted to come down on them like you wouldn't believe, but cooler head prevailed before they came home. I fed them, chatted with them for a moment and ask the one that I'm good friends with if I could speak with her in private. In an adult manner I'm proud to say, I explained the situation and relayed the severity of it and she agreed and offered an apology and promised it wouldn't happen again. But I can't help but be a little nervous from here on out. I know thay have a lot on their minds. They come home tired, mesquito stung, dirty, hungry and frustrated with the toll the all days are taking on them. They are beaten to a pulp and usually go straight to bed after showering and eating and get up every morning in pain even after 8 hours rest. I can't help but feel the corps may be a little responsible for what occured at my home today as I noticed the kids are losing their focus and stamina little by little each day which has resulted in their sloppy behavior around my house lately. Of course I doubt no corps would ever admit to working kids too hard, but these kids are solid veterans who have been around a while and they look like they need a little time off to recharge their batteries. A little time I said. Not a week or 3-4 days, but something more manageable to give them time to go to all days fully focused and ready to go. I really wanted to give these kids a piece of my mind, but I've marched, I know the stress and pain they are under and I believe I handled it the right way as I do have a special and close relationship with all three of these kids. I though had never experienced such a sloppy mistake like the one that they had made today and put my personal life at risk. I believe they did not do this on purpose, but what could have been scares the heck out of me. Any opinions out there?
  11. I hear a roll of quarters are always appreciated.
  12. Jack Bevins's infamous powdered Scrambled eggs and Baco's
  13. I like this subject. For the fact I don't have children marching but being involved for 30 years now, the one piece of advice I would like to add is don't be a typical soccer/ T ball/ any sports parent. Have trust in the instructional staff in their decision making. I have heard way too much of " I don't know why my my son/daughter isn't the soloist or featured performer" kind of statements being uttered at camps. This is a team effort from the Director all the way down to the volunteer who can help out once a year. I heard one parent last year complain at both SA sessions that their kid wasn't put in the drill enough in front for everybody to see. WTF?? I can't tell you how hard it was for me to bite my tongue during this corps performances.
  14. I have an extra ticket for San Antonio. Sec 112 Row 8 Seat 11. $50 cost I'll eat the S&H charges.
  15. I've always thought if I was to get married, I would prefer a gal with some sort of drum corps ties. As important as it is to me, having the bond would be cool. I've taken many a ladies (non DC) to shows and though they like it and enjoy it, they don't quite grasp the intensity that I have for it. Or expect them to for that matter.
  16. What I'd like to see come back that I miss is moving semis back during the day on Friday. Something special about those days in Boulder, Birmingham, Montreal etc... Bring back full retreat. The shows seem like they are lacking something at the end w/o them. The old snare sound.
  17. Cool posting with the updates on the members of years gone by. Need a lot more of these. BTW, what drums did Phantom play in 1982? Love the sound of those snares!!
  18. Maybe I can help you out working downtown and have been in every restaurant and bar downtown thanks to my profession. Can you describe it at all? Was it right on the mall or did you wander a street or so off?. In a basement or 2nd level? Maybe an idea of the the interior or what it was facing? A sit down restaurant with a lot of professionals or maybe a small store front with very few tables?
  19. Anybody I know in the above pic? and what year? I think I still have my 82 Puker shirt w/ Mr. Rogers on it.
  20. Garry, I have a pic at prelims in Birmingham in 1979 and the corps photo taken afterwards. PM me.
