  1. I have a cassette recording from 1979 in Cary, North Carolina. They played the entire song as their closer if I recall correctly.
  2. Didn't y'all do a standstill in downtown Montreal in 1981? I have some pics of that and I'm sure it was the Defenders.
  3. Pretty self explanatory i.e. I'm going to the Dallas show on 7/19, staying there Friday to catch Pat Benatar @ HOB and then hauling off to San Antonio for Saturday's show. For anybody interested (which I am not) ABBA will be at Red Rocks the Friday before DATR in Denver. This is the venue that U2 filmed one of their most famous videos which I want to say is "Sunday Bloody Sunday". If you ever get a chance, catch a concert there. A truly amazing venue.
  4. A gal I know from last summer confessed to me that she and her boyfriend who is not in a corps had major issues during the middle of last season. The boyfriend was adamant about whether she should decide about marching this year and risk losing him because he couldn't stand being away from her. She had admitted that this problem prevented her from concentrating for about a week during tour and she wasn't giving her best effort as her mind would wander while this was going on. And this is not a person who has a habit of being a slacker. A very hard working veteran of the corps. But she mentioned any meal break or after lights out or any chance she got, she would be on her phone trying to work this out not only with him but calling her friends for support and advice. To me this is a perfect reason not to allow cell phones on tour. Any emergency back home( true emergency) can be relayed and worked out with a staff member who can determine the validity of an off the field issue. I do believe in the unity of drum corps and imo cell phones do nothing to promote that.
  5. 3 theaters in 05, 2 in 06 and just one this year in Denver although I think Pueblo 100 miles south had a showing.
  6. A couple of observations. I've noticed the attendance has decreased every year at the theatre I go to in Denver. Maybe 150 in a 400 seat hall according to the manager. The sound and contrast during Madison was awful!! Anybody notice the Cavalier silks in the final tune looked like flames as they spun? Maybe just the quality of the video, but for the most part I was also not impressed with this episode. Forgot how much I enjoyed 94 BD and Star of Indiana seemed to impress me more tonight than the 1/2 dozen times I saw their show live.
  7. 1989 was my favorite. loved "Yo Mambo" 1988 1992 1991 loved the music but not as clean as other years 1990 1985 Final analysis 1983 last year before making finals 1984 Yes, record skip before Cavies did it in 06 1979 My year in VK marching the tymp Ugh!!!! 1977 Nice musical book
  8. Well, I'm not limited to just traveling to shows and housing kids and paying their dues. I also work Bingo for them ( 30 some weeks in a row now, I've lost count) but I'll also jump on the food truck helping out wherever I can, whenever I can...
  9. I would love to have that many shows within 200-300 miles from my home! The closest one I'm attending outside of Denver is either Omaha which is about 550 miles or Ogden, around 500 as well. Albuquerque may be a little closer, but I do need to work a few days this summer.
  10. The Omaha/Ankeny trip is running me 800, I have a free airline ticket to Milwaukee so the Madison/Mankato trip about 450, another free air ticket to Philly so Allentown/Hershey 700, The Dallas/San Antonio weekend is the expensive one as I'm flying a girl/friend of mine there from Hawaii so my best guess is 2500, Wichita 200, and I live in Denver so just the price of the tickets, Ogden a 48 hr 300 trip and Pasadena maybe 1000. But before you may think I'm being selfish and not giving anything back, I house three kids in June for the Blue Knights on my dime and I paid all the fees for the two that I housed last year. And I'm helping out a gal from SCV I know as well. Used to give my money to Friends of DCI but didn't like the direction that is heading, and this way I can actually see how my contributions are helping out some poor college kids who really need the help.
  11. Where are you all headed this summer? I'll start it off. All my plane, hotel and rental cars are complete, just waiting on a few show tickets still not on sale. Omaha, NE Ankeny, IA Madison, WI Mankato, MN Allentown, PA Hershey, PA Dallas, TX San Antonio, TX Wichita, KS Denver, CO Ogden, UT Pasadena, CA
  12. Eleanor Rigby also played by Geneseo Knights in 81 and some Chicago tunes played by 2-7 in 70 or 71 perhaps? (Dallas VFW Nats)
  13. I thought it was a tough choice leaving Dallas out, but couldn't leave Opie or Baggs off my list. Whatever happen to Len Carey? Also, Mike D'Angelo judged Performance percussion at 1989 finals, but never judged another DCI Final and I recall talking to some members of SCV how they felt he really robbed them at some shows that season. Mike had taught me in VK and found him to be a very astute instructor. Anybody know what his "beef" was with SCV if any?
  14. Percussion- Rodney Goodhart, Len Carey Brass- Sandra Opie, Bernard Baggs GE- Jay Kennedy, Clarke Williams Visual- Marie Czapinski, Gene Monterastelli Color Guard- Fred Feeney ( who never judged in Finals) from WGI Music Analysis- Lloyd Pesola
  15. Speaking of taunting, I remember doing a parade in Big Bear, California with VK and it seemed like the entire route was dominated by bikers, stoned and drunk off their ### running thru our block and imitating the drum major and color guard. a really scary day. And of course Bob Lendman getting me drunk on my birthday (July 4th) along the parade route in Beloit. Stopped in about 5 or so bars downing a couple in each joint and then trying to catch up with the rest of the corps. The one time I didn't have to march being the tympanist and possibly Bob just being a great guy helping me turn 21.
  16. 82 was my age out year as well. I had marched VK a couple of years, took 81 off and got lucky and joined Blue Stars in Boulder, Co in late June. This was the year Blue Stars were picking up kids at nearly every stop on 1st tour..Colorado, Utah, California and they started the year with about 15 -20 kids from Rogers High School in Spokane WA. Bob Lendman and Moe Latour did an incredible job keeping this corps afloat. If I remember right, the corps went inactive the following year before starting up again in the lower divisions and I can't tell you how proud I am to see them back in D1. I think I was the only age out of the corps that year as well. A small but talented group of instructors kept the corps focused on the history that we represented. Dave Wakely, Randy Knox on Percussion, Jenny Osterheld (PR guard captain), Steve Stueck, Steve Severance and now WGI judge Fred Feeney? also on the staff. My memories of that year were pretty much watching Phantom and Madison at nearly every show with us for 1/2 the summer and being impressed how Phantom pulled off Spartacus for a 2nd year. The runoff at DCM in DeKalb. Living in the Mary Sawyer Auditorium in LaCrosse between tours. The annual Puker, Beers and brats!! Bob Lendman getting me drunk on my 21st on the 4th of July on the parade route in Beloit. Meeting two hot gals from the Riverman, one in the guard and the other a mello from Decorah, Iowa Hooking up with a local french gal at our housing site in Varennes PQ during finals week and Dave Wakely proclaiming, Dude that's the hottest girl I 've seen on tour all summer!! And I still chat with her. Meeting another gal from the Coachmen at the Port Huron show and catching up with her finals night and she had an extra ticket on the 40 yard line for me and getting to watch the bottle dance even though we heard about it a day or two earlier. Watching the transformation of Garfield that year. Still one of my favorite musical books. Madison and Strawberry Soup!! Couldn't hear that enough. One more time Chuck Corea Sky Ryder rifle line ( Tracy Burch maybe?) Pines of Rome Hearing that my old corps, VK had changed their style, but never seeing the show that year for some strange reason and hearing how folks were excited about some of the things they were doing. And my favorite...Allison Lendman beating the hell out of a couple of cars while trying to back one of the buses up in those narrow Montreal streets. And yes, you couldn't hear much during the bottle dance as the crowd went beserk, but I knew it was a special moment ending my drum corps career!!
  17. SCV has been doing cymbal visuals for many years. thruout the 80's and possibly as far back as 78 or 79 if my memory is correct.
  18. Last I heard, still living in the Denver area. Saw him at last year's countdown classic.
  19. I had written sometime back, what I heard from two D1 directors, is Ticketmaster holds the contracts in these stadiums and their events. They can also choose not to be the ticketing agent for shows which venues they have the contracts at. This is why fans were able to purchase tickets for select shows earlier this year i.e. Denver etc...
  20. Along that note, one you'll never see on DVD or tape (thank god) in 2005 in Wyoming during rehearsel, a female horn player lost her bikini bottoms during a run thru. Her name and the corps ID is being withheld also to protect their privacy as well. But she was a good sport about it somehow.
  21. There was a big train wreck in 99 in Denver but it wasn't Cadets. Give me a couple of hours and it'll come back to me at my advanced age.
  22. Agree on "One more time Chuck Corea" but I was really impressed last year with Academy's version of "El Cumbanchero", a song I have not heard since the mid 70's.
