  1. A little trivia to add with regards to Ed Trautner. In the DCI era, the only year that DCI and the American Legion hosted their jr. corps championships in the same city was in Denver in 1977. The American Legion had hosted their events in Miami, Minneapolis, Houston, Seattle, Portland, and New Orleans during the 70's and was scheduled for Honolulu in 1973 which never occured probably due to the travel expense I assume.
  2. I knew quite a few BD folks from 80-81 but never met Doug. I do remember how wonderful Dindi was performed on the field. It's sad to see folks we marched and competed with pass away in what I'm assuming his early 50's.
  3. Barb Maroney, Garfield early 80's. Rob Carson, SCV Robbie Robinson, Crossmen Greg Blum. Big Al, Freelancers Hunter Moss, Spirit Morgan Larson, Madison Scott Dean, BD Jenni Osterheld, PR Since this is labeled Performers, I will add as DM's who I thought were great performers, Daniel Veerhusen, Madison Al Go, BD Dave Flynn, Cavaliers
  4. It would interesting if this is the case. One WC director told me about this last fall that you could almost count on DCI turning into one class. I guess we'll find out tomorrow.
  5. Jack called me up two weeks before DCI last year and was looking for someone to travel with. One of the better trips I have ever been on. The stories we shared made the trip go by so fast.
  6. I'm just surprised no one else had posted this yet. A DJ I know in a club told me it has been around a little while.
  7. 1979 Guardsmen, 3rd in GE Brass.... 1975 Madison 1978 Spirit
  8. Denver will hold their Tuba concert at Skyline Park on the 16th Street Mall on Sunday , Dec 23rd at 1:00 pm. It draws well over 300 brass players every year.
  9. For percussion moments I would say: SCV's use of Steel drums in 1983 VK snares and quads playing of bass drums mounted on poles during the drum solo in 1989 Bridgemen, Black Market Juggler in 1980. Phamtom having the quads play snares and the large bells in the pit for 1812 Overture in 1983, quite a thunderous sound which is the norm nowadays. The drum charts written for the 27th's Niner two. As for iconic moments: SCV's drill in 1980 Garfield taking it to a more extreme level starting in 1982. SCV Russian Christmas BD One more time Chuck Corea Spirit of Atlanta starting with the first horn impacts from Sweet Georgia Brown to the ending notes in Let it be Me in 1980 after what had happened earlier. Not too many dry eyes in Legion Field that night.
  10. Watching the corps caravan leaving the stadium for another town. My Corps pulling out, but I never do :)
  11. Some of you may not get this one but for a gal: "I hear you're a big tipper, will you Dance with me George?" VK1979
  12. How bout I take you to the Land of make believe?
  13. Hi. I'm from Bayonne, but you can call me SHAFT!
  14. When I first saw you, I knew I was looking at the Story in your eyes. Please, please, Let it be Me! How about a one nighter and we'll just look at it like, The Way we Were?
  15. I never marched with them but I am a Bushwacker!
  16. I'll never forget Bob Lendman. Search for "My tribute to Robert Lendman." He was one of the many great folks who defined DCI.
  17. I would hope that DCI cares about the common fan, but one thing I'll always remember at the Friends of DCI State of DCI/ morning of finals breakfast in 2004 was Dan Acheson telling the audience, " I know everybody wants us to care about what they think, But it is what you people in this room think is that what really matters". He went on to say something along the lines of "the tens of thousands of dollars you contribute is the reason DCI is in such a great state". So unless 40 or 50k fans can come together and agree on a certain topic, I think our current situation is the status quo.
  18. I'll also add that on Saturday, DCI reps were handing out flyers with the schedule of the parade. On the back was a coupon for Indiana residents who could buy a finals ticket for $15 and bring two children with them free of charge, though the seats were in the two cheapest levels, that and giving every ageout a ticket the next year tells me DCI just needs to get butts in the seats and hopefully they will buy concessions and a souvenir or two. I used to be in charge of doing crowd estimates for a large city government at sporting and music events and my best guess from high above in the press level and looking from the field, I would estimate there were 10k for semis and 14-15k for finals. And for finals you need to subtract all the freebies for corps who didn't make the top 12.
  19. I had VIP access to the entire stadium and sat in the press level most of my two nights there. Looking straight down at the crowd, there were numerous empty seats in the 100 level in the closest 5 sections to the 50 yard line. The 300 wasn't much better and I talked to a couple of scalpers I know who travel all over the country to work major sporting events. They both told me it was the worst year in terms of getting good seats and reselling the ones they had at a decent markup.
