  1. Happy birthday, DCP. I wonder how many hours of our lives we've spent here. Yeah, my first post in quite a while, but I figured I'd pop in and say hi.
  2. Corey Hart will be doing vocals for next year's show?
  3. I've heard through the grapevine that the Freelancers Alumni are going to be on America's Funniest Home Videos tonight. I have no idea of what it is, but I'll be watching. ABC SUNDAYS 7|6c
  4. I must have voted for 89 about 20 times by now...
  5. I saw this thread last night, but I hadn't heard anything from Carl about it in a while so I sent him the link. He called me back about 10 minutes later and confirmed. He also added that he and a lot of other people are excited about the new prospect of a small corps circuit here in the west. Not only that, he also had two telephone appointments to talk with two corps last night after he got off the phone with me. Looks like it's going to be big!
  6. Wow. And I'm glad that the people who complain most about DCP can be counted on to jump on a person who gives a valid opinion. Before you call me troll, read my posts. I'm pretty sure I've had many more positive comments than you during my time here.
  7. So I pop on for the first time in a while to see how the world of drum corps is doing. Looks like the same arguments. Another dissatisfied customer gets flamed for giving an opinion. OK. I'm off to participate in the hobby that replaced drum corps for me. Oops. I almost forgot to add that I still haven't been to a DCI show since 07 finals.
  8. Small correction here. Dutchboy did City of Angels while VK's theme/show title was A Night (Knight?) at the Apollo.
  9. I'm not going because I don't like the new format (hey Rich!). I really liked the Classic Count Down.
  10. I'd hate to be the person to have to pick-up all the yellow bricks at the end of the show--or follow Toto around with the scoop and bag.
  11. Another idea, since fellow DCPer 'garfield' is in the thread--what about retro-gear, like an old corps' favorite logo (think Garfield's spinning "G" arrow or Bergen County stuff).
  12. Bawker has it, of course that isn't just any corps. Trinkets are really cool too. This is where a corps can get really creative. Something worthy of putting on a shelf in my office would be awesome. I think someone had the idea of selling mini headgear a few years ago--along the lines of three inch or smaller hat/aussie. Maybe this would be a souvie better created through a partnership of multiple corps in order to get the price down to something reasonable. I think die cast vehicles would be cool too, like PR's equipment truck (didn't I see something like that a number of years ago or did I dream it?). Devil's Food and Miss Amana would be great as well. The SCV or Madison's buses or the OLD VK staff bus that billowed smoked like it would explode at any moment would be huge. Antenna balls with a corps logo? I'm a little tired of seeing jack. Coffee mugs as I've said before, but not a generic white one with a corps logo. My dream souvie would be a full corps of movable figures on a field supplied with set sheets so I could maneuver them according a current favorite set of a corps. Now that would be pricey!! The best souvie for certain people would be the DCI champion rings for all the years so all the fibbers can prove they marched in the year XXXX with _____ corps. Hahaa. I think that's good enough for now.
  13. I always preferred open horns in any venue. I once had a 43 Bach that was so stuffy I wouldn't even play with it in a sand box.
  14. Black will be last year's avocado.
  15. Who says DCI should have a target audience? Marketing specialists? I think it used to be that corps marketed themselves with a certain image based on unique appearance, rep and style. That's not to say that they all sound or look exactly the same, but really, is there that much of a difference these days to the untrained ear? My fixes--tell me if this seems logical (or not--who really cares?): Programming and corps should be different. Have the judges quit using the term "characteristic tone" it's way too subjective, unless it it's used in DCI--In DCI, there is one characteristic tone. In the real world (the entertainment world), there are many styles and tastes--not ever is the term "characteristic tone" used. A characteristic tone doesn't sell records and doesn't fill stadiums. It's intonation and timing--then blend and balance. If an entire corps plays with edge, fine--more points because the corps plays as a body (see how i did that?). But having every corps run around wearing 1980's glass-ceiling professional woman's shoulder pads and and playing wind ensemble music with that "characteristic tone" will drive people away. Sure it sounds good to most people (even people who aren't fans), but it just isn't entertaining. That's why people don't fill the seats. When was the last time anyone saw a sold out wind ensemble concert where the price of admission covered the costs of putting on the concert? I haven't seen a single one. At marching band comps and band concerts, you'll notice very few in the audience are fans. All are typically judges, faculty and students (most of the students are loitering outside, BTW). If you want fans in the seats, give them a reason to want to see a show. Seems pretty simple to me. Still popular today are crazy beats and obnoxiously loud music. That's what the fans want. For the music majors and educators who disagree, look around. If you don't like it, you should leave, the are plenty other avenues you can use to express yourself. Of course, you'll have less fans wherever you go. But really, how bad would it be to take a risk? Be entertaining while not fearing running off the wind ensemble types. DCI already took a gamble by alienating Legacy fans and would-be new fans by throwing the entire organization at music education. Lets see it goes if they reverse course. I personally haven't been to a show since 07 Finals. I wanted to see a couple corps and that's what I did. I spent good money only to watch a few corps that night. The rest of the evening I spent walking around or smoking in the vendor area. The corps I watched did in fact entertain me, but only one corps really made me run the gamut of emotions--the Kingsmen. I never watched them perform live until Semi's night. See ya'll later. I'm heading off to check out forums pertaining to my replacement hobby. Ohh, do you guys know anyone who has a set of '40 Ford 16x4.5 5x5.5 smoothie wheels for sale? lol Think about it:
  16. I've just listed a DEG Dynasty II two valve sop on eBay. All proceeds will be donated to the Freelancers Winter Drumline. Soprano If you're feeling particularly charitable, please visit the Freelancers website! You can even send a check!
  17. I'm working on a course assignment, watching a Frontline clip about teens and the internet and a teen who is being interviewed is wearing a Cabs hat! Am I easily distracted or what? Frontline/Kidsonline He's at 6:45. Here's the hat in question":Cabs hat.
  18. OK, so I voted for 76, 89, & 95. Should I be surprised my votes match with most others'?
