  1. OK, here we go: 78 ode to joy 79 elsas 81 opening statement 83 1812 85 whole show, very underrated, would love to see them gives symphonie fantastique another shot as a member: 86, rookie year, very rough, don't think we did a complete rewrite, but not far off. 87 the closer, tieing Cadets for first at DCI Canada, finishing 3rd at prelims, the white unis 88 the ensemble in the closer, winning colorguard 89 the whole show, especially the aforementioned sop entrance to the end still gives me goosebumps, performing with the Kansas City Orchestra, winning visual and brass 90 Bacchanale, winning visual, finally beating SCV after aging out: 91 Nessun Dorma 93 Fire of eternal glory, death hunt 94 white witch doctor 95 opener, another very underrated show, the black unis 96 opener is still one of the greatest 4 minutes ever put on the field in my opinion, was genius. also "and 2nd place... which is actually a tie for first place" 03 canon 07 1000 airplanes on the roof (I love philip glass music, always thought Cadets would do this one) 08 whole show, loved it
  2. Thats funny, cause in 87, finals was our worst run of the month LOL Now prelims.... that was something to see.
  3. You can't compare one years scores to another. Main reason is the judging system changes year to year. Also, the number of judges changes. In DCIs history, there have been as many as 14 judges some years while others (89 for example) there were only 6
  4. Something I don't think alot of people realize is that in 37 years of DCI only 8 corps have won Kingsmen 72 SCV 73, 74, 78, 81, 89, 99 Madison 75, 88 Blue Devils 76, 77, 79, 80, 82, 86, 94, 96, 97, 99, 03, 07 Cadets 83, 84, 85, 87, 90, 93, 98, 00, 05 Star 91 Cavies 92, 95, 00, 01, 02, 04, 06 Regiment 96, 08
  5. If you've never noticed, the top corps generally score 70s in June, 80s in July, 90s in August While in theory, scores are based on criteria on the back of the judges sheets, and how one corps does in relation to another shouldn't effect the score, the reality is its just a system of putting the corps in order relative to each other.
  6. Return to the Winter Palace? I can just hear Brazale yelling "FIRST 5, LAST 5" over n over LOL For those who never noticed, in the 87 show the lasy 5 moves of the show were the same as the first 5 only in reverse. So every day, the last thing we did was first 5, last 5
  7. Same here, 82-96 is basically what I thin k of as the golden age. end of the tic system (more or less) thru mid 90s. I will definitely be buying this years DVDs however
  8. can't see very many doing anything from 08 DCI as most bands picked their shows well before the DCI season wrapped. But I bet we see a Spartacus or two popping up next year LOL
  9. PR did the ring music in 97 I would also vote for Symphonie Fantastique. The 85 show was just too much for the corps to achieve at that time. I would love to see them give it another shot. Having marched 89 I would prefer they leave New World alone. MY personal preference would be a full bore, no holds barred version of 1812 I can just hear the low brass already LOL As good as Crown made it sound this year, I would love for PR to do it. The 92 show just didn't do it for me.
  10. band? BAND? well give hopkins a few more years, he'll get us there LOL oops that was a bit offsides wasn't it?
  11. In my opinion, the last really legendary season before this one was 1989 That year all the top had great, fun, enjoyable, well executed shows. I think in time that 2008 will be viewed as one of the best ever
  12. Should count 96 since Regiment wasn't even top 3 after Quarterfinals that year LOL
  13. I think following 89, that 90 can seem like an off year. 89 was one of those years where everyone was good, just an awesome season. But 90 had a lot of great shows, and alot of great half shows. Cadets had a fun show, a little bit of everything from their 4 previous winning shows. Regiment had Bacchanale SCV did Carmen, a really underrated show BD did Tommy, which alot of BD fans didn't care for, but I actually liked alot and still listen to. There is alot there
  14. I agree. At the atlanta regional a few years ago, a senior corps performed after the show and they used G horns. There is a very obvious differnece in sound and projection. I would bet even the most novice fan would be able to tell the difference no problem
  15. Gonna have to add several more zeros to the left of the decimal point Mark LOL To be honest I think I have only ever worn mine once. Seems kind of dorky to wear it if you ask me. Its on a shelf with the rest of my old drum corps stuff LOL Now whoever said $1,996 is heading in the right direction LOL add another 0 to that, $19,960 and I might just fork it over LOL
  16. I recognize 93 Stars talent and excellent performance skills, and that they had a very difficult book, but man that show just put me to sleep. This argument is sort of like the movie "The English Patient" either you thought it was a masterpiece, or the most boring thing ever.
  17. one more thing. I worked extremely hard for my ring, I love it and cherish it with all my heart, BUT, if someone walked up and offered the right amount of cash I would toss it over in a heartbeat, and so would anyone else. we all have a price whether its $1000 or $1,000,000 now before you trash me, just know the amount it would take assures I would never sell it, but if someone offered me a 6 figure sum? yeah, it would be gone
  18. Only ammendment is I would tell Crown to just keep on doing what they are doing. I love them the way they are, no need to see Phantom :)
  19. You nailed it. thats where I was going with this whole thing. You didn't happen to march with John Apple did you?
  20. ok here we go. Needless to say anything by Regiment gets my approval. 87 Cadets - LOVE appalachian Spring 94 BD - what a horn line 88 SCV - cause its WAY better than 89 89, 96 Regiment -no explanation needed 95 Regiment - WAY underrated show 87 Star - the circus bear and the pink elephant crack me up 95 Madison - Mid season I thought for sure they would win. what a great show. 86 Troopers - I just like this one. way too many to name actually, but this is a good start The reason 89 legacy DVD is a top seller is because the top 12 were amazing that year from top to bottom. very rare that happens. I think this years DVD will be a huge seller as well as all the top 12 had great shows. As far as 88 vs 89 SCV there is a topic in the historical section. The OVERWHELMING consensus is 88 was the better show. There is another on there somewhere about 89 SCV vs PR and last I looked PR had the nod.
  21. my point is they show up on ebay and they never go unsold. just wondering if that happened how much would you pay? You can't honestly say if you walked up to a yard sale and a DCI ring was on the table, and the lady says "make me an offer" you would just say "no thanks". I know I would at least want the history behind the ring and why it was for sale. If there was some good reason it was for sale I would buy it. How about this? What if a championship corps was auctioning off a ring for charity? does that make the question more palatable? :)
  22. Having marched in 89 Regiment when we were said to have lost cause of drums, I can tell you it doesn't really work like that. especially this year. BD lost by a total of .025, if ANY caption had popped an extra .1 they probably would have won, so might as well blame the high brass line for not picking up the slack. See what I mean? As for the two percussion judges, JJ and Jeff, yes, they both marched Regiment, I marched with both of them. Pretty sure Jeff marched somewhere before coming to Regiment, and JJ marched Dutch Boy, then Regiment, then aged out with BD. Plus both are exceptional judges and Regiment won drums all 3 nioghts and they only judged finals. Cheers all
  23. the point is how do you assign a vlaue to something that is basically priceless? The rings themselves can't have an actual material value of much more than maybe $50-$100 max, but its the symbolism and history that makes it worth more.
  24. Christ, you're missing the point of the exercise LOL
