  1. OT, but is the middle story in the new fanfare yours? just curious
  2. I'd like to say both, but I'd much rather listen to a CD than watch a muted dvd
  3. 1994 Lancers - pretty much the whole thing, but Danny Boy, especially
  4. I certainly don't, but I've heard about a guy who had to get his entire stereo system replaced in his car because it was about a cent and a half flat and would drive him nuts. I'm kind of thinking recognition that powerful would suck, alot.
  5. I thought Jubal was the oldest corps in history, but I can't remember when they were founded
  6. Daphnis et Chloé by Maurice Ravel Just announced
  7. I've never seen a good description of drum corps that relies on the words, horn, drum, woodwind, all summer, or things of that nature, a good description of drum corps is obviously not a dictionary description. To say that drum corps is/isn't marching band, is to decide what definition of marching band/drum corps you're using, in many senses, yes, they are the same thing, a bunch of people on the field playing instruments. But you can also say that drum corps and marching band are entirely different things, and I will go into that shortly. The best descriptions for drum corps as well as marching band are not descriptions of the product, but the process. People dont march an entire season in order to see themselves on a video, or get a ring (at least, I hope not), they march because of what they get and learn while marching, while on and off the field. So, for me, it is really a question of the experience. Is the experience of drum corps the same as the experience of a marching band? I wouldn't say so. I won't say one is always harder, or more fun, or more informative, but I will say they are entirely different. The feeling, and not the end product is what defines these activities for me, and because of that, I have to say that they are entirely different things.
  8. if everything works out like I so very much want them to, VK will be fielding, and there's no way I won't be there
  9. I've never marched/taught anywhere where dots are more important than dressing, but I recognize how it could work and work well. What's better? I have no idea, but I do know that making sure everyone is doing the same thing is the only way it's really going to work.
  10. it might be a good idea to run this poll again but after finals when everyone is actually around to see it
  11. I pretty much completely agree, except replace Euph with tuba. It totally sucks alot of the time (especially basics) but it's entirely possible, and not actually as hard as it looks. I still think it takes a psychopath to decide to march cymbals.
  12. It really doesn't mean that at all... if ALL the same people who voted on the other poll voted on this one, it would, but that's obviously not the case. I know there was a poll to see who marched/marches in what section, but I can't find it. That would be the clear(er) indication of DCP readers. It would also answer this polls question as well.
  13. I would say alot of it has to do with actually knowing about the corps. I'd assume alot more people know what The Cadets did this year than Southwind, so even if Southwind's program was designed more... interestingly than any other corps, more discussion will happen when The Cadets are talked about, just because more people know what they did and are able to talk about them.
  14. From what I've seen, I'd say cymbals definately have it the hardest. Just holding those things up gets as tiring as euph or contra, but they are flailing them around (in time) the entire show. To me, it would be comparable to snapping a horn up and down for 11 straight minutes. When it comes to pit, I don't think the loading and unloading is too hard at all (compared to the work of the other sections), but the amount of time they spend on any part of the music would kill me. The pit doesn't do anything but play the music all day everyday, no marching, and very little visual respoonsiblity, just playing certain measures over and over again until they are perfect. I know I couldn't handle that all summer.
  15. I think the biggest (if not, only) disadvantage, would be because most horn players don't normally (or ever) play on G horns. The time it takes to get used to them, even if it is a short time is time they wouldn't have spent if they started on Bb horns.
  16. while I would love to see drum corps be advertised like that, it just wouldn't make any sence for McDonalds, so many people have no idea what drum corps is, and it would make no sence for them to explain it on the bag, or anywhere, for that matter. What I could see, is just love for music (playing sax on a street corner), but that would really do nothing to bolster this activity.
  17. I don't think there's anything really wrong with the way it is now, but I know alot of people really want to see a few specific shows ad then just vote for ones they kind of want to see because they have extra votes to put somewhere. So I was thinking, you give everyone 12 votes like now, but they can put as many or as little votes into each show as they like. So if someone really wanted to see 27th lancers from one year or something, they could put all 12 votes into that one year to help the chances of seeing it, or they could put 6 votes into one show and 6 in another, or however you'd want to split up the 12 you have.
  18. I would really like to know how much you personally know about what a tabla is, or how it is performed/taught. I completely respect your view that it may have interrupted the flow. I would just like to know if you had any reasoning behind it, because I felt that the tabla added to the style in which the show was played. The show had alot of elements of traditional Indian music, with a composition feel that almost felt like a mix between kaplita sangeeta and manodharma sangeeta... well as close to them as you can get in a drum corps show. With the Cadets show, drum speak can make sense much easier, because of the way the show was put out.... Anything can make sense in their show fairly easy. But it seemed like the drum stuff they were doing followed more of the Dancer in the Dark music they were performing. rather than just being "far out" and if this is the case, did they want the 4 in the guard to be more stymbolic of Selma's character? I'm not sure, and I seem to be getting a little off topic... Again, not knowing your background knoweledge of how a tabla is played/learned, I can't safely assume your reasoning behind your feelings of their show. I would like to say that the Bluecoats show, in my opinion, brang out the drumspeak with a much better reasoning than The Cadets show. The again, I guess The Cadets show wasn't supposed to have much reason in it. Edit ...ack, was beaten to it...
  19. the only problem I have witrh MTX's is that the top part of the show, where your toe bends, gets in really bad condition after a single season, mine were ripped along both sides of both my shoes, by the time tour ended
  20. I'm not sure about making drum corps more popular by learning from figure skating, but I think there is something in the way it is being judged. People constantly say that acheivement is what is judged for drum corps, but with a maximum score of 100, and two corps getting a 99.15, it seems there isn't much room for more acheievement, score wise. With the system set up for the olympics, they getting a score out of a high number (I believe this is how it is), but can only score points for doing well. This means that there is no "cap" judges have to worry about, or, in years to come, different corps scoring up in the high 99's with no place to go from there. Of course the scoring would have to be quite a bit different, from the way it is for figure skating, but I think the idea is a good one.
