  1. And he does have old T-shirts, too! And at least he didn't use the old "....she's young enough to be your Daughter, for tap dancing Buddha's sake......" See you at Kamp with the rest of "The Steve's", Homeboy! Spectemur Agendo, RON HOUSLEY KAC 2nd Baritone "...some days you're the monkey and some days you're the football...."
  2. Arivas: Good luck on your Sneak Peek. And good luck to you on the 24th in Walnut, CA, the slate for that night looks great! Also: I think there will be a bit of history happening at that show that is not listed on DCI.org's calendar. May I offer that as an incentive for you all to turn out for this one? RON HOUSLEY 2nd Baritone Kingsmen Alumni Corps
  3. Quote Roark: "... have often wondered if they know what a long shadow their legend casts to this day...." End Quote Brother, we of the Kingsmen Alumni Corps know how much we represent that legend and are working extremely hard with just that goal in mind. It's not just about a bunch of old timers coming together for fellowship and grins, The Kingmen Alumni Corps knows the world will be watching and, like always, we are aware of the pressure on us to be larger than life. The Kingsmen Alumni Corps committee is committed, also, to the high standards of personal excellence and pride that goes with putting on The Kingsmen cadet uniform and, having watched this thing grow literally from the ground up, I can report that these people are high caliber individuals and Kingsmen Alumni who put the corps before themselves and hold it and all of us to the standards that Mr. Donald Porter, Senior would have. I personally need to thank all of you who have written with kind words and encouragement for what we are undertaking and to let you know that in 2007 at The Rose Bowl, when The Kingsmen Alumni Corps makes its appearance the night of Semi Finals, you will not be disappointed. RON HOUSLEY 2nd baritone KINGSMEN ALUMNI CORPS 05-07

  5. I hadn't seen the whole column yet. Maureen says that, upon a second reading, it appeared to her that it was, indeed, a "hoax" and "humorous" column. Oh well......thanks for playing along. If I get any legit questions, I'll call on the teeming minions again. RON HOUSLEY KAC 2nd Baritone
  6. You can also find a great early performance by the 71 Anaheim Kingsmen at World Open that is being sold by http://www.drumcorpsvideos.com Recorded from the stands a bit to the right of the 50 but it is a good black and white historical document of the corps.....the audio's not bad, either. ...and may I also recommend the rest of the line up from 71 World Open, including the famous "Alice" program of The Madison Scouts, and the Casper Troopers "Wagon Wheels" cowboy and indian spectacular from the same show. If you want to see and hear The Kingsmen Alumni Corps live please check our calendar of events at http://www.xkingsmen.com RON HOUSLEY KAC 2nd Bari 06-07
  7. This question was posted on the xkingsmen.com website today and I thought I would turn to the vast and talented minions to shed some light: any takers? QUOTE: "...I just received my copy of DCI Today in the mail today and was flipping through it and came across an article titled "Free Day-Thirst to be First-Great Moments from the Unknown Past". One of the snippets reads: First person to take entirely too much credit for success of a drum corps: Jesse Jacobs, who often claims he dragged the 1972 Anaheim Kingsmen "kicking and screaming" to the first DCI championship in 1972. More than 30 years of bragging have clouded the fact that his only contribution was, in fact, a "Here you go" hand-off of a dropped drumstick to a member of the snare line outside Warhawk Stadium in Whitewater, WI. Anyone ever heard this "legend" before? _________________ Maureen Walter Heckman San Diego Albacores/Golden Statesmen 67-70 Santa Clara Vanguard 71-75 Flag Santa Clara Vanguard Alumni Corps 97 & 02 Santa Clara Vanguard TOR Parade Corps 04 Kingsmen Alumni Corps 06-07 END QUOTE So......who is Jesse Jacobs, eh? 8. xkingsmen.com has a "In Memory" page that lists all those from The Kingsmen organization who have left us sorry for their passing but richer for knowing them and their commitment to The Kingsmen. My first true love, one of the legendary Kingsmen Rifles, is on that list. RON HOUSLEY Kingsmen Alumni Corps 2nd baritone
  9. I suppose adding a loop of the Yellow Rose skirt flip to the endless loop of Troopers guard pillow fight is almost a given at this point. What ever became of the SCV yellow rose tribute picture, JoJo? Is it still extant? RON HOUSLEY KAC 2nd Baritone

  11. I miss this guy. He passed away too young. RON HOUSLEY 07 KAC 2nd Bari
  12. Indeed, indeed! I remember hearing the news from Lance Kellogg about winning DCI when I was living up in Vail in The Fortress Of Solitude with the ex- and a long way from drum corps. Now I'm marching with those youngsters.....and "Mr." Braga and people who I marched with back as far as 1966? Yet somehow so B) RON HOUSLEY Kingsmen Alumni Corps 2nd Baritone
  13. Ought to be fun to hear a lot of the Kingsmen repertoire from between, say, 72 and 74 played by 150 brass, supported by a full, solid percussion section and a guard that will you leave you breathless. When, you say? Well, try the night of semi finals at the 2007 DCI Championships at the Rose Bowl, Pasadena, CA. Who? The Kingsmen Alumni Corps. Madison Reunion Corps in 06 and the Kingsmen Alumni Corps in 07. Couple that with the finest young drum and bugle corps on the planet and I think we're talking about some serious entertainment, folks. See you......... RON HOUSLEY KAC 2nd Bari Squad
  14. That's "Mr. Braga" now. He got married the Saturday before last month's KAC full corps rehearsal.....and showed up ready to play the next day. Mike is my hero. Wait till you see The KAC Cymbal Section in action.....you will understand our mutual respect for "The Other Brass." Viva "Los Steves"! RON HOUSLEY
  15. Thanks, TQM. Post enough and you're bound to get something right now and again. And Jeff.....absolutely right about modern fans and corps members not knowing who The Anaheim Kingsmen were and are again. Even though it is The Anaheim Kingsmen who are credited with, in 1967, actually being the first west coast corps to tour nationally and thereby making drum corps competitions a truly coast-to-coast experience: how soon we forget stuff like that. One of the functions of The Kingsmen Alumni corps is actually to re-introduce The Kingsmen organization to today's public by preparing the way for KINGSMEN STARCORPS, which will be the new competitive DCI corps to come. Cannot give more details about STARCORPS, but you may find some info on http://www.xkingsmen.com I can report that STARCORPS will be in good hands and The Kingsmen Alumni will be supporting their activities from now into the future. RON HOUSLEY KAC 2nd Bari
  16. Felix: you're brown? I've gotta pay more close attention at rehearsals......everybody at Kingsmen Alumni Corps kinda looks "blue" to me......and not in a sad way. See you next rehearsal, Hermano. RON HOUSLEY, The Other White Meat KAC 2nd bari
  17. Don't most people who go to semi-finals also go to Finals the next night? I would think that would be the case. As for MORE people turning out at semis then finals just to see The Kingsmen Alumni Corps, who knows? DCI is about the "junior corps" and rightly so: this is their time to shine! The Kingsmen Alumni Corps are performing "in exhibition" the night of semi finals and therefore are one more part of that evening's slate of entertainment. Not that the crowd is going to want to run out for popcorn and a potty break before scores are announced, mind you. We'll see you in The Rose Bowl in 07.....and a couple places TBA before then. RON HOUSLEY 2nd baritone Kingsmen Alumni Corps
  18. Anaheim Scouts........soon to become The Anaheim Kingsmen and Velvet Knights. Early Anaheim Kingsmen had an all male corps. Note: Ms. Karen Anderson was the first female guard captain of the first female guard of The Anaheim Kingsmen: class personified. Karen will be on the field as one of the guard captains of The Kingsmen Alumni Corps. RON HOUSLEY 2nd baritone Kingsmen Alumni Corps
  19. .....AND concerts gave a judge a chance to go from individual to individual to check heel positions at a halt. In the old vids, that's what that guy walking around the back of the concert formation with the clipboard is doing. Feet had to be at a 45 degree angle, heels together, touching, and even with each other....very military. Not unreasonable to assume that tics here could cost a first place in a tight contest. RON HOUSLEY 2nd baritone Kingsmen Alumni Corps
  20. Seven-seven. Again, thanks to The Renegades for the invite to LMS-LA. See you all there, old friends and new. RON HOUSLEY KAC 2nd baritone
  21. If I were to be laid to rest in Black Watch tartan and do the whole Scottish funeral rites, than I would invite The Kilties.....a dirge version of Auld Lang Syne. On the other hand, if I go out wearing a Kingsmen uniform, well, then it would be all 300 plus members of The Kingsmen Alumni Corps playing "One Hand, One Heart." Followed by "When Ronnie Comes Marching Home."* Baby, I want 'em to know I'm comin'!!! RON *OK, I know, it's "Johnny," but it's my funeral, eh?
  22. 'SOkay bout the chicken......at least she marched. It's not as bad as this person who had to wear a frog suit in front of a restaurant on a little 2 lane hiway in The Sierra Nevada range on a hot mountain day. I used to feel pretty bad for that frog. Show biz can be so cruel! Bridgemen were good entertainment, pure and simple. A most unique drum corps experience. The Kingsmen Alumni Corps has either one or two Bridgemen Guard memebers marching with us: Tori and, I think, Kelly? We're getting so big at rehearsals it's hard to keep the full resumes of our brothers and sisters straight. Phantom french horns are represented in KAC as well.....Rene, you rock, Sister! RON HOUSLEY 06-07 Kingsmen Alumni Corps 2nd baritone
  23. I am honored to be a part of The Kingsmen Alumni Corps. We have been asked to play in exhibition at semi-finals of 2007 DCI. DCI has never had a final competition in California. California is the home of the 72 Anaheim Kingsmen, the first DCI World Champion. To be a part of DCI's championships out here....and at the Rose Bowl!....is a great honor. We are working very hard to present a show worthy of the name Kingsmen. To be able to go on at all is notable as up until just a short time ago there WAS no Kingsmen Alumni Corps. Finals belong to the current editions of the best junior drum and bugle corps the world has to offer, that's my opinion. To be a part of the entertainment on the night of semi-finals as an exhibition corps to honor both DCI's history and commitment to drum corps and to celebrate our own Kingsmen history at the same time is an amazing thing in and of itself. Getting to march at DCI on the night of semi-finals before a huge, enthusiastic crowd for the first time, for me, since 1967, make that pre-DCI, and getting the opportunity to do so in a Kingsmen cadet uniform with 300 of my brothers and sisters is something I cannot convey yet in words. Thanks to DCI, the Staff, Committee members and the rest of the marching members of The Kingsmen Alumni Corps for making this possible. We certainly hope that you will be entertained by our part in the festivities because we're really doing all this for you, the fans. No politics, no hidden agendas, no conspiracies, just the full on love of drum corps and respect for the fans. If there is one underlying motive in our appearance it is to honor Mr. Don Porter, Sr., the late Anaheim Kingmen director and co-founder, in his induction into the Hall Of Fame and as well as to honor the memory of those Kingsmen who have passed away. Thanks to all the folks who have written to us and otherwise expressed their support for The Kingsmen Alumni Corps. Having said that.......please join us in supporting Madison's Alumni at this year's 2006 DCI. Then we'll see you all in California in 2007. All respect, RON HOUSLEY 2nd Baritone 06-07 Kingsmen Alumni Corps
  24. Mr. Groh and I are going to celebrate our 60th birthdays in 2007. We thought we'd hold the party in the Rose Bowl the night of DCI semi-finals. We've invited over 300 of our friends in to play for you. That would be The Kingsmen Alumni Corps. Hey,I thought we had 16 contras last Sunday, April 23rd. I know we had than many french horns! I know the percussionauts were stoked with their brand new gear. Under the game face they were grinning ear to ear. It's going to be great sharing a Los Angeles LMS venue with The Renegades....the announcement WAS made last practice. So nice of Renegades to invite us to the proceedings. RON HOUSLEY KAC 2nd Baritone
  25. A word to the wise rather than just a hint. Re: headchoppers. Really a big thing in the 60s. Anaheim Kingsmen did two versions.....a faster one in 67 and a slightly different one in 68. We're talking about the horn line here.......if one were to forget to duck, OR changed places in the opening sequence and had to change from "turn first" to "duck first"....and didn't duck, there would be a loud, resound BINNGGGGGGG!! when your face was creased by the edge of a horn bell whipping through at just under supersonic speed. This happened at an early 67 rehearsal and I literally knocked a guy off his feet when he couldn't remember he was now a "ducker." I told him "...get it right this time, 'cuz I'm not going to check-swing on you and I'm comin' around HARD....!" I still remember that sound......and I bet he still has a scar or at least one heck of an indentation in his forehead. RON HOUSLEY 07 Kingsmen Alumni Corps
