I'm pretty sure American Fork or some other HS in the Utah circuit did it years ago... can't remember which year though... the post 05 era I think?

I would also say their "book" is hard. Used in a sentence: "Crownguard has a GREAT sabre book.. lots of hard twirls with body. Their flag book is a bit easier.. not so tricky."

Hey Jim, I'm actually the current president of the NWPA (www.northwestpageantry.org.) Theres not TOO much of that kind of colorguard still going on. The closest is actually the group of people who do the ROTC group for the Seattle Gay Pride parade. Lots of old skool rifle. I know ron meir is still around as is john fisher. They're both judges now however and don't really teach.

I'm from the NW but I've never heard that name. Do you know where they are teaching?

If using a 6ft 1inch diameter pole I always just use a 2 inch long carriage bolt. They're fairly easy to find at any hardware store. they fit RIGHT in the crutch tip for the pole and don't rattle around and don't make the flag OBSCENELY heavy ;o)

I would... tentatively agree. A group that has a weapon line that can throw a 7 cleanly together and catch it with technique would not IN GENERAL be an A guard. However there is far more to the classification standards than how high the weapon line can toss. There are PLENTY of very talented A guards out there that definitely belong in the class because of the level of design the show displays. Design is SUCH a huge part of this class (Hell of ALL the classes) that people seem to forget... too many of us think like equipment or movement techs and don't take the up top general view of the show like a show designer (I am guilty of this often!). I think a few ways to tell a guard is solidly A class is looking at the amount of movement they are doing with their equipment, and how much of the triad they are maxxing out over the course of the whole show, but yes... a group throwing very large tosses together is a SIGN that they MIGHT be misclassified but it is not the end all be all ;o) As for the amount of A guards that moved onto Open class... that doesn't neccesarily mean they were misclassified and should have been moved up earlier. If anything I think A class was very strong last year and demonstrated A class performers and designers who GOT IT. They understand what A class was and maxxed out the sheets and did it in an appropriate manner for the class. I think out of the top 3 groups I saw an ensemble 5 or 6 from each of the weapon lines and almost always there was a half, bobble, or drop. But thats just imho ;o)

Hahaha I've marched with people from LOTS of places.. I've seen ALL kinds of weighting. BTW... NEW fiberlgass poles are FAR FAR different than they used to be.. if anything.. they're LIGHTER than metal poles now.. and they don't splinter because its pressed different than it used to be. I LOVE them because they don't get cold or hot (it gets COLD in the NW by the time the marching season is over. Plus I use tape marks and white tape on a while pole doesn't show ;o) But OMG to the post about using a 5.5 inch weight!!!!!!!! LIke WOAH.. heaviest flag EVER..... ;o) I changed my bolt to a 2 inch bolt for the fiber glass pole cause I changed the shape of my flag a bit... It spins JUST right.. no pulse.. but no slowing down in the middle of a toss.. Plus.. the whole thing is just light enough... you don't have to struggle through! I like writing work from the bottom tip.. and a heavy pole makes that CRAZY hard... We used 6ft fiberglass poles at BD and used pretty much the same weight as I do.. either a 1.5 or 2 inch carriage bolt.

I'm guessing Will is from the midwest or east coast ;o) I use fiber glass poles and metal poles with different groups I teach. We weight them differently. a 6 ft fiber glass pole uses a 1.5 inch carriage bolt in the top. a 6ft metal pole uses a 2 inch carriage bolt in the top. If you have a normal sized silk on the pole these weights will make the pole not "pulse" while rotating. You might WANT that pulse.... it's a personal choice. I want my flags to rotate evenly and cleanly so that the silk stays open as much as possible (the point of a flag is to show varying degrees of color based on choreography right?). But like I said... it's a personal choice. Try out a couple ways and see waht feels comfortable for you.

Agreed! this is how I do it with my kids.. and how we did it in every guard I've ever been in (that used tapes I mean... not everyone does. We didn't at cascades and we didn't at NL... but TJ at BD was ALL about it...)

I've painted flags before... I just used spray paint.. But I wasn't going for a "picture" or design.. just trying to make it have a darker part on one side...

Everyone and their mom got promoted in A class.. What was it like the top 9 or 10?!

Holy old Rifle Lines batman ;o) Jk jk... I love that old school stuff sometimes ;o) One of my favorite rifle lines ever is Blue Devils 2001. A couple of cavalier years (although cavies have always been kind of sloppy in my book). Cadets 03-04 also awesome. And NOT that theres video of it... (stupid DCI camera man ZOOMED in during a halt.. and the rifles were all on side 1) but my rifle line in 04 was pretty sweet... If you listen to the judges commentary from the guard judge on the 04 dvd's he goes "Well done gentleman..." Bah! *shakes fist*

Is that a flag spot or a weapon spot? Just thinking of some boys I teach I want to send off on tour ;o)

Hahaha... it's actually a variation of a Quote I say all the time that I stole from Tracy Wooton (Hoss)... He always used to tell me to not think about it so much/hard (I tend to.. over analyze everything.. colorguard included) and he'd say "It's just flags in a gym... stop thinking so hard" I say the same thing to my high schoolers... "Sometime we just need to realize its just flags on a field or flags in a gym.. it's not that deep.." ;o) Call me the master of motivation...

I actually think 06 had the best strap work. But none of it is really that hard. Just... different. If you find an Northern Light somewhere.. it wouldn't take very long for them to teach you the strap work ;o) And I only poke fun about it being watered.. cause we had this ONE boy who kept dropping this stupid grab in the strap... Even World guards are still just flags in a gym...

Northern Lights Strap work isn't THAT hard ;o) Certainly not after being watered half way through a season... ;o)

Nah... its just that back in the day NL used to be all about the kids. So during the Circuit champs they would turn their floor around and perform to the high school kinds instead of the judges and audience ;o)
