  1. Word...Are you in the DEP? If so when is your DOE? When do you leave for basic? And you know, what...if you cant do drum corpsl, the Air Force equivalent (and I will say is much harder, <personal experience>) is Tops in Blue. If DCI doesnt work out try out for Tops in Blue. I did...and I got to travel to 27 countries in 8 months. Its a tough gig, but its worth it. I know what its like man...I enlisted two years after I aged out.
  2. I really dig the 81 Scouts version. It grooves and everytime I listen to it, I start bobbing my head. Great show! One of my favorite Madison Shows of all time.
  3. More video from Marine Corps land: CAUTION!! Swearing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zeX5HSBFooI
  4. This was like the first day of Memorial Weekend camp in Madison...Ha!! Just kidding. While we did have instructors in Madison yell from time to time (rare occasion) its because THEY knew we could do better. And there was a trust between member and instructor (who had marched in our same shoes), that they had good reason to be ###### off if we were performing like crap and not upholding the performance level of our corps. This got me thinking. Yelling: Is it good/bad to motivate in drum corps. What say you? CAUTION!!!: A few Blue "cuss" words will follow if you click on the link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYVBlXGuVYg
  5. Bates Lights?? Anyone...After you break into them (aka..after the bloody heels) they work great and look good.
  6. Music first...I'd rather take a standstill performance with no visuals and loud exciting music over a visual performance with no music.
  7. Wow! Old school. The TRIANGLE. That is still there. I was down there this past Jan or Feb. at Kessler with Tops in Blue and the surrounding community looked like a war zone. (Still recovering with the hurricane.) The base didnt look all too bad, but still...a lot of things were closed...the commissary, the Enlisted club. 84 BD...Bad ###...Looking forward to the BD alumni Ens.
  8. Nope, never been in the pit. You ever have a 12 hr set up for a show, and a 6 hr take down?
  9. Well here's something I know a bit about. I toured with Tops in Blue last year for the '05 tour as a trumpet player. If you thought Drum Corps was hard, TIB trumps that 3 fold. Its a tough gig, since YOU and your teammates (about 35 or so other Airmen) put up at least 1 semi full of equipment (consisting of lights, audio, staging, etc). I lost about 20 Lbs during tour. It really was a good experience though. How often can you get to visit 27 countries in approximately 8 months, and all at the governments expense? As for drum corps people, I was on tour with someone that marched 95 Glassmen. This years tour has someone that marched 97-98, (or it might be 98-99) Carolina Crown and another person that marched in a So Cal Corps (Esperanza?). A few years ago there was even a guy that marched in the 70's with the Freelancers. Tops in Blue is like a Vegas type show, with singers/dancers/technician/musicians. The show itself usually last about 90 minutes. And I also believe, if you are in the Reserves, or National Guard, and you have the talent to perform, the Director of Tops in Blue can probably work you back into Active Duty for that one year you are on tour with Tops in Blue. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to PM me.
  10. Dont think we ever did morning runs. We always had Breathing block after lunch...and the worst breathing blocks came after those Taco Surprise lunches.
  11. Yeah that was awesome. If they had like a monthly or quarterly get together of just random folks, (they dont have to be famous) in drum corps talk about their DCI experiences from say...only 82 guard members or 93 staff members, 77 brass guys, or 68 drumline dudes that would be entertaining. Sooo many good stories...
  12. I'd also put in Madison for the 98 and 99 finals company fronts. Since I was in the group I feel that these were the worst of all year, but somehow managed to gather before the start of the show. 98 Side 1- Company front breaks while guy lines field. 99 Side 2- Company front breaks due to loud cheering. Also I think a tech might have mistakenly counted off the step off at the near front side line. He thought the DM at the center counted off the CF, but sadly he wasnt, he was mistaken. I think it took about 30 or 40 yards to self correct, but somehow, I'm not really sure, we got it back straight again. Two good memories. :)
  13. Like the Kids in the Hall reference...:) Derrill or is it Darryl ?
  14. Hey Bogey, What you up to these days. PM me.
  15. Adam Carolla...Adam's dad played trumpet/flugelhorn Also Jimmy Kimmel played clarinet in high school band. Get him out there to do a segment.
  16. I also think that professors that would embrace drum corps could add to their summer income and also recruit some good players for their respective universities. For example, could you imagine if Bobby Shew was on Staff somewhere, that might get some more people to try out for X corps. Unfortunately, I dont think too many of those big league players would like to spend a summer on the gym floor eating PB&honey, and I'm not sure X corps could afford a top tier performer(s). Then again, look at PR and all their great professional performers they have had/do have on their staff. I know a guy that marched 98 PR primarily b/c Peter Bond was instructing for a good part of the season.
  17. I had somewhat of a similar experience. I know that many of the profs didnt like the activity, but there were some profs that had marched. So what I did, was not mention my intentions to march to those profs that didnt care for it, and then got encouragement from friends and profs that did march. Surround yourself with positive people.
  18. 89 BD...one of my fav shows...I wish DCI still had shows like that...
  19. Lackland AFB does have a drum and and bugle corps. From what I remember if you had any musical ability when you arrived for basic training, they put you in the D&BC flight, in which you would have to perform for the weekly graduations. You would still go through the rigors of basic, but you would also have the additional task of the D&BC. I never got asked, so I never made a stink about it. I know Keesler (MS) has a D&BC too. But I was going to school at night time, so I wasnt able to participate in their group. I do recall there being some guys and gals from DCI in that group. (Southwind, and BD)
  20. That is definitely 2002...Seattle Cascades in 12th, Magic, Boston higher than Glassmen... Oops my bad, you are right...
  21. Yeah, I had that shot as my desktop wallpaper for a while... I'm not sure if you all have seen Charles R. Frey's DCI photographs but you can find them at this site. (They are from 04). He has some outstanding shots. http://community.webshots.com/user/crfrey71?start=0
  22. I always liked this one: http://drumcorps.mbw.usmc.mil/classic/dci%20finale.jpg
