  1. Let me know how that goes for you Dan.I tried it once but I ended up in 3 different places. Look out NEW York........It's MAD PLAID TIME!!!!!
  2. Got my bags packed and I'm all ready for the 16 hr drive to Syracuse. I really don't know how I let them talk me into driving. But one has to experiance a road trip once in awhile. I remember when we did the show in 99,WOW what great crowd responce!
  3. Here's a little Trivia on leaving shoes on the field. Ray "Moon" Johnson,(Kilties Jr) was the first person to leave thier shoes on the field. What year was it? The Broadcast even zoomed in on his shoes at the end of the show.
  4. I thought last year was going to be my Finale. But then I got "The Kiltie of the Year"award and decided wellllll maybe one more year. I really want to go out having made Finals, one more time. Truthfully with the advances the corps is taking,it is getting more difficult to keep up.Not being a natural musician,I already have to work my butt off to play the charts. Right now I'm being told I'm doing fine. But, I don't want to hang around till someone drops the ball on me and says "Time to get off the field,Seymour" I don't want to be a liability to the corps.
  5. I remember when Thunderfoot Jensen took her over over the curb in Ishpeming MI., at 50 miles an hour. She went airbourne for a good ways did a perfect 4 point landing did a little shimmy and kept on a going!
  6. Always the lost one you are! Take Rawson ave to 15th ave, north on 15th to S Milwaukee High school. And should it read Former Contra John :)
  7. One of the things I remember from when I started playing 40 years ago,was Lloyd Pesola saying You got to play low,to go high. It still holds true to this day.
  8. George Fennel,Kiltie Jr alum, has a great site with pictures of Kilties,Skokie Indians, and the Boys of 76,just to name a few. Pictures
  9. If you ever get to DCA,finals or get to see the Renegades look up a guy called Pooh Bear.
  10. I believe last year they were working on a Prototype with King.
  11. We're not allowed anything sugary before we play -- not good for the horns. If we do have bug juice or iced tea, we have to rinse our mouth out. But I think the lemons might work. And the H2O bottle is an awesome idea, but probablly not allowed either in our corps. I'm pretty sure the guy using the water bottle said the judges never said anything. I believe he also used it when he was with Empire. It's not real big in diameter and it fits in a way that it's kind of hidden.
  12. I dry up so bad that it becomes impossible to play.I have tried lemons and these only proved not to work long enough to get me through the show. I think, for me the dryness is all caused by nerves. I can play all day during practice.but come time for the show and three seconds after stepping off,it's cotton mouth time. I've resorted to keeping a piece of gum tucked away between my cheek and gum. Another one of the sopranos has a water bottle attached to his horn with a bite tip on it. I've thought about trying it.
  13. Wrong. Pioneer was two points ahead in percussion. they were 6 points ahead in guard alone And the were 9 over all. I would say the majority was guard as my post stated.
  14. The point spread between Pioneer and the Kilties was almost entirely from the guard score. The guard got hit really hard for not having the entire drill. The rest of the captions very close.
  15. I play on a Bach 3cw,it's a little more forgiving on the the chops. I also used a CG3 but was just the opposite,I loved it for the concert stuff but had a hard time playing on it while doing drill.
  16. Great Job guys. Pooh, when you got done with your gig the judges were grinning ear to ear.Knew you had in you pocket right then and there.
  17. I play 3rd sop and do not sight read. I have to hear the part first then I can follow along. What I do is have someone tape my part so I have a copy. If I can't get a tape, I put my part on the computer with Print Music. When I have the part down I'll take a full hornline tape and try to play along. I know I'll get gigged for this but I don't always memorize how many counts a rest is. I just try to listen to all the parts and use musical cues whether they are cues from the hornline or a drumline cue. That way I don't have to worry about counting out a 4 (or however long) bar rest The guys at work thought I had some kind of affliction because I was always walking around doing Air fingerings. I had to explain what I was doing. Now when they see me doing it they ask if I got a new part to learn.
  18. I play on a Bach 3cw it works for the parts I have to play(3rd) I tried a CG3 and loved it in the rehersal room but had a bit of a hard time on the field with it. One question. When people talk about Blue Devils CG3 is it the one and the same as the Claude Gordon CG3 mouthpiece?

    Polish

I tried Tarnex and didnt care for it.Even after I thought I had it all rinsed off I still got black all over my gloves. You need a lot of water to rinse and this is not always available. I use Wrights silver polish now. I also carry a polishing cloth which does a good job when you are in a hurry. B)
  20. LOL LOL LOL - never figured out those skid marks either... Although it does make it exciting for the fans... Like - did you hear those mother####### sopranos scream that last passage - got to love it - and the Renegades are full of hosses like that - can't wait to hear you this summer. That's an easy one to answer. We just turn everything into a jazz lick. Then it's law you have to hangover.
  21. Thanks CozyChops. I just got to this thread and was surprised it took that long for Jim's name to come up. You are so correct. When discussing Lloyd's injury and drum corps' loss of Jim, a fellow Spirit alumnus said it best, "I am haunted by what might have been." Surely junior corps brass playing would have evolved away from what it was at the time (and actually it had already begun to), but I always wonder what might have been different if Jim were still going to critique. Indeed, Loud is Beautiful. It took some coaxing but LLOYD is back instructing. He is working with the Menominee Northernaires and the Ishpeming BlueNotes. And he hasn't dropped a beat.
  22. I think it is totaly amazing to see what the corps are doing today. Even in the shows that have music I don't like, I always find something to go WOW didyaseethat about.
  23. Kilties use different deep breathing exercises to start things off. (Use warm air)the best that I can explain this is, filling up with air and using all of it trying to get at ths botom air in your lungs which would be the warmest in theory.Doing this you are less likely to choke you air off cause you have to stay open to get at that bottom air If you ask around I am sure someone more capable than I can explain this concept. But it does work. A brief lip buzzing, then lip slurs. Then on to Clarke and Goldman. We also have some other exercises that the various staff members have come up with over the years. I played contra in Juniors and I wish we would have focused more on the deep breathing.Because breathing is where it all starts.
  24. No George I still like all the corps. Its the music selection by some I have a problem with
