  1. Do they show the entire show start to finish? Or are we wathcing clips of the performaces?
  2. Sorry, I know this thread is old, but rereading it is bring back so many memories.. I think on our return to finals in 1989, we yelled "Play Ball" on finals night. Can any former members confirm that? The parade rest thing, man that was fun! I loved getting the attention fo the other coprs at retreat.
  3. Don't be cheap, shell out the dough, support the kids, get some #####in music!
  4. Good for them. I reposted it. Hooray for me!
  5. Ok, I was just inspired by Stef's femur bone post, so I thought I would throw out this question... If your favorite corps was a cereal, what would it be and why? b**bs b**bs b**bs b**bs b**bs
  6. I agree with Chuck on Phantom's show, they are in for trouble. From a less technical standpoint, the GE is lacking. I really want to like this show, just having a hard time finding moments that will allow me to get excited. Anyone else having this problem?
  7. I am really starting to like this You Tube thing. Check out this calssic VK/Blue Devils moment from 1982. For those of you that have never seen vintage VK at retreat, you'll love this. VK tries to upstage the BD DM's at BD's home show, but the devils drum majors have a come back. Enjoy
  8. Sucking is bad... not sucking is good! Having a stick thrown at you... its just drum corps. No harm, no foul. If you are wimpy enough to whine becuase a stick hit your feet, you don't belong in drum corps, none the less a top 12 corps. (sounds worse than I meant it, but feel free to flame away!) As for the heat, after spedning the majority of my youth in Bakersfield, and most of my marching summers at the other end of the San Juaqiun(sp?) Valley, it's freaking hot! In the mid 90's byu the time rehearsal starts in the morning, and in the triple digits before lunch. Hot is hot, doesn't matter where you are at.
  9. Charles, As for the issue of being gay: it's a non issue, so let's move on. As for the issue of which instrument... he needs to make that decision himself. Having played low brass, I will say that its more wear and tear on the back as the season progresses. And contras (tubas) obviously are a tad heavier, but after a few weeks on the road, it won't matter. Also, I see a lot of people talking about how difficult it is to make the corps. This is pure hogwash! If your son has the dedication and can put forth 110% effort every day, he will make any corps he auditions for. The most important factor in drum corps is determening the potential and dedication in future members. A horn staff can teach your son to play better if he is willing to put in the work. I have witnessed violin players, with no brass experience at all, walk into a division I corps and make the hornline after several weeks of auditions simply becuase they possesed the determination and grit to stick with it and not give up. And remember, there is a certain amount of autrition that occurs over the winter and spring as well, leaving many corps looking for members in May and June. My advice to you, since you are in the midwest, find out where a corps is rehearsing this summer and take him out for the day to see the corps go through the in's and outs of a typical day on tour. Any corps would be happy to let you watch and get an idea of what the experience is like. Watch the rehearsals, check out the gyms where the kids sleep, take a look at the food trucks, and follow them to a show, watch the hornline warm up, and follow them in to the stadium and watch the show. Nothing beats getting first hand knowledge. Good luck to both of you and welcome to the world of drum corps b**bs
  10. I know there has been talk of DCI's proposal to move to Indianapolis and the offer to have the stadium for ten years, but someone told me today that Championships are all but set for Indy in 2008? Any truth to this? Did not know this was close to being a done deal. If it is, I think it's very cool, Indy is a great city!
  11. It's 5 and a half hours from Phoenix to my home in Claremont (I have lived in both Phoenix and So Cal and made the drive more times than I would like to recall). Currently I am about 30 minutes from Pasadena. I would say 6 hours is a good estimate. But does it really matter? In fact, this year, the corps have a show in Bakersfield, then hop on the busses and head all the way to Mesa, AZ for a show the next night. Talk about a LONG overnight trip. Get off the bus, warm up and straight to the starting line. I would say that will be about a ten hour trip, probably more.
  12. Anyone else get the impression that some of us have way too much time on their hands...
  13. No real comment, just wanted to repost the picture b**bs
  14. As nice of a thought as it is, it would never happen, nor does it need to. DCI is fine with what it has now. Keith Jackson is one of the greatest broadcasters of all time, in my opinion far surpassing Curt Gowdy (no easy task, Curt was awesome!). Jackson has been doing Pac-Ten games since his first "retirement" seven years ago, staying close to his Los Angeles home. I think the traveling has finally taken its toll, and it was no secret that he was going to retire this or next season. Best wishes to him, he will be sorely missed.
  15. Why is it that when anyone picks corps "long gone", VK, Suncoast and Star are the only ones mentioned? No disrespect to these great units, but there are others corps that were just as entertaining and competitive.
  16. The oil situation might just dictate that Indy become the permanate home, at least for the next several years, and I don't think that's a bad thing at all. BOA and WGI draw great crowds every year, and I see many benefits to this for DCI from an orginizational standpoint. As for things to do in Indianapolis, you just have to know where to look. C'mon guys, can you tell me that there haven't been worse locations for finals? As for things to do, here is a short list: Caribbean Cove Indoor Water Park Imax Theater Tour the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Indianapolis Arts Center Indianapolis Zoo Take in an Indianpolis Indians game (great Stadium next door to the new Colts stadium) Explore one of the MANY beautiful parks Spend the Afternoon shopping at Circle Center Mall Spend the night partying in Broad Ripple (The Vogue and Landsharks are two of my favorites) Take a day trip to Indiana Beach Visit Hinkle Fieldhouse on the Butler University Campus (The same arena where the movie Hoosiers was filmed in the 1980's) Take in one of the many area malls Visit the State Capitol Have dinner at the Eagles Nest (at the Hyatt Downtown) Day trip to Chicago (2 and a half hours north) Take a stroll through White River Gardens Spend the day at the Indiana State Fair (Early through Mid-August) Catch a flick and have some dinner at Hollywood Bar and Filmworks See the home of President Benjamin Harris Spend the afternoon at the NCAA Hall of Champions Colonel Eli Lilly Civil War Museum Go for a bike ride on one of the cities many bike paths
  17. We love ya Ma!!!! And we love Star too! PLease bring'em back Jim!!!! :)
  18. Is stupid the best you can do? What does traveling have to do with getting ESPN2? Although it is cable, it is pretty widely distributed. I can't travel to most finals but I still manage to see it on TV every year. Weak argument stupid...
  19. 1988 - Beatrix - Holland(28th in Prelims) 1983 - The British Crusaders - UK (22nd in Quarter Finals) 1991 - Beatrix (29th Place) 1996 & 1999 - Yokohama Scouts - Japan (Division III) These are the corps I know about, but I assime there are more.
  20. First of all, there are other corps that have folded and returned to DCI to do rather well, even top 12 status, after being out of the acitivity. I voted no on both questions, simply becuase whether or not a corps makes a jump to Div 1 is not based on how another corps did. There are too many midigating factors involved. To say that the Blue Stars success would be an inspiration would be another thing. But their success would be based on the strength of the corps management and their "business plan". And to say that other corps would be able to use the same path that the BLue Stars have would be highly irrespnsible as well.
  21. My God, we just got on ESPN 2, do we really need to resurect this discussion all over again. When will you people ever be happy?!?!?!?! Sheesh! Someone please explain to me why network television is needed?
  22. Ummm, guys.... why is everyone jumping all over AZEuph. If you go back and read his posts, it is fairly obvious that his intention was to ask about Star's history. And for that, you guys are jumping all over him. He never ONCE said anything negative about the orginization. I understand Star has recieved a lot of crap in recent years, but those of us who truely understand the orginization and appreciate everything that Star has contributed to the activity, we know these alligations are false. You can't please everyone, and you have to let the naysers go. You and I know the real history and the true contribtions, what other people say can't be controlled. And along those lines, jumping all over someone that is simply asking a question about the true upbringing of Star makes the orginization look that much worse. If you want to share the true history behind Star of Indiana, than make it a positive. You are the ambassadors of the Star legacy, and its your job to provide a positive insight into one of the truely great youth arts orginizations that has ever graced this country. By using these forums to snap at someone with good intentions, you make yourself and Star look that much more guilty of the false rumors that are being spread by a few angry fans. If you want to jump all over someone for starting a harmless thread, do it in a private message. In my opinion, not cool
  23. All of these have been great examples of solutions that could and should be emplemented. But the fact of the matter is, we are very close to putting some of the corps in serious financial jeapordy THIS YEAR! I hate to say it, but 3.50 a gallon will be the norm by this summer, and in some places, it could reach $4 a gallon. If Hop's numbers are correct, it is going to cost the Cadets $350,000 for their summer tour this year. Imagine what the West Coast corps will be paying this year, and what the east coast corps will have to pay next year. That is simply astronomical! With fubdrasing becoming more difficult, and the economy becoming weaker as a result of the higher fuel prices, you are going to see less people traveling to shows or willing to spend their hard earned money on a ticket to a drum corps show, which means gates will be down. Increased tour fees in the next two years will also have an impact (and unfortuanetly, this is going to have to happen). The fuel crisis is going to have a serious trickle down effect on the activity. Its time for some tough choices to be made, and they need to be made now, not tomorrow or next week, but now. Some great ideas for using alternative fuels have been given here, but what is being missed is how much it will cost each corps to implement the changes needed on their equipment to make this happen. Converting diesel busses to run on alternative fuels wont be cheap, and for some would require purchasing brand new equipment. I would encourage DCI to start putting a contengency plan in place and would think a special BOD meeting is needed to address this issue alone. The lively hood of the activity is at stake.
  24. Hmmm... you became a network news planning editor when? CBS Network news ain't exactly big media? And just what exactly constitutes big media? When did you become an expert on what the media covers and why they cover it? If you would really like to know what they cover and what they don't cover, and why, just let me know and we'll have this discussion offline.
