  1. Hey everyone, I just moved to Syracuse in May, and the High School line I teach has a good number of kids looking into winter programs but tehy nor I (since having just moved here) know of any in the area that are still active... Any info would be great. Thanks.
  2. Start Simple... learn a measure, memorize it... then work on multiple measures, then chunks, then whole tunes... Try to do the chunks intermitenly... like measure 8-16 then 37-42 then 1-7, etc. That way you are forced to learn the music... Yea recordings work really well, in the way that you are forced to "hear" your specific part. As Aristotle once said "we are what we repeadetly do"... practice makes perferct supposedly. Have fun... jam to it... Peace, Cullen.
  3. Ok Guys, I come to drum corps planet to get away from Theory fanatics at Berklee... lol I'm only messing around... yes the v can exist. However with Greecian modes as we now know were translated improperly. One of the reasons why we have Melodic and Harmonic minors, or adversly, the reason why we don't have 2 minors, depending on the school of thought. In other words... It's a DARN good thing DCI didn't vote to drop on field warm-ups!!! b**bs b**bs b**bs b**bs Ok time to get back to scoring this short film... what am I saying "get back to" I need to actually start! :P Peace, Cullen. (editting by request)
  4. I am not a Mello player (Well maybe I will be for the mini-corps) but I hear the Mello 6V is the mouth peice of top Mello lines. At least I remember Gino Cipriani telling our Mellis to get on Mello 6V... Check it out! Cullen.
  5. WOW... someone mentioned it... I swore it wouldn't happen... I know I complain about Berklee... but the fact is no matter where you go you will always run into Administration problems. Berklee is PHENOMINAL! One of the greatest school on the Planet. But it's very hard to stick around and be an individual. Being in Drum Corps you will fair much better then the average guitar player who can't read music. go to www.berklee.edu for more info. I'm a FILM SCORING major... just keep in mind that a career in music is not just Limited to Teaching... however if that is what you want, more power to you! Best of Luck! Cullen.
  6. I have seen this... as a matter of fact I even tried to have a "POWER HOUSE 3rd sopline" at Brigs this season but they were affraid that there would be TOO much power on 3rd and not enough balance on 2nd. I mean everyone in the line would have played LEAD somewhere else before!!!! We have worked out and are maintaining a UNITY amongst the sopranos. Parts are assigned yes but we don't reffer to each other as Upper Upper Upper Leads and Lower Lower Lower 3rds. We are SOPRANOS. Cool shtuff isn't it!? I remember a few friend and I were going to try out for 3rd sop/2nd mello at Blue Devils in the late 90's because we were all the Leads for our various "MARCHING UNITS and district/all-state music offerings"... but alas... we suck. Ok time for ritual animal beatings... Cullen.
  7. Kyle, NICE CHOICE!!! I hope it serves you well. Treat it as the most beautiful woman in the world, spoil it... play her every day, clean her often and give her a rub down (polish cloth you sickos!) and love her more and more and I garuntee you she will never steer you wrong! Peace, Cullen.
  8. Well... the question remains what kid of horn are you looking into buying? I have a reversed lead pipe and a straight old standard lead pipe, both bachs. I love both my horns. Neither have tonality issues and both play very well. The idea is that less AIR is lost from small gaps between the lead pipe and the tuning slide. But to be honest I do not think you will notice the difference. My advice has been and will always be, go to the store go to another store, and another store... etc... until you find a horn that apeals to you!! Try horns multiple times. Pick horns aren't like picking your nose... you do have a choice! Cullen
  9. Lucas is right... Still, the names Soprano, Alto, Baritone, Contrabass all come from chorale writting. The brass section is really just a brass chorale... I still don't see why they can't just call them Sopranos, Contra's etc. And to be honest they were the only change. You've gotta love Symantics! Cullen.
  10. Yes Please Let me know as well, I am looking to buy a Sop... Also, what are the new horns? Bb/G? Yamaha/Deg/King/other??? The world wants to know!
  11. I own three Strad's... one custom Bb: 37 light weight bell standard leap pipe made in 1952. one standard Bb 43: HEAVY Weight bell reversed tuning slide xl bore made in 1996 one flughel Bb: 183 last series made in Flughel. I love all my horns. I know people who swear by Schilke, Yamaha, Benge, and others. I have played on yamaha horns that have never been seen in public thanks to a teacher who is a Yamaha sponsor. What I recomend is spend the time and play around... you may find another make you like better. I prefer my strads... but that is me. Cullen.
  12. There isn't any use trying to argue the point. I like Brass... all brass... even if they allowed Trombones into Corps I wouldn't mind. I would mind if Woodwinds were allowed. I think the name thing is a tradition more then anything else... Because as a Soprano you name that group as the Highest section in a Brass Choir. All Drum Corps really did was raise the key by a Minor 3rd... nothing more... I know some lines are using F mello's and such but still... I heard the arguement about the Timbre's being differnet so mixing a Bb line with G didn't work so hot. I still feel as my teachers have taught me: "Sometimes it's the Plumber... not the Plumbing!" I really enjoy playing a G Kanstul Powerbore Sop... but if marched Bb I would gladly bring out my Bach 42 XLbore, Reverse tuning slide heavey weight bell custome Bb Trumpet! Just give me a horn and tell me where to stand! Now if Dyansty invents a "Wedge Bugle" I'll laugh my ### off!!!!!!!! As I think I have made the Dynasty people unhappy many times, "I refuse to play on this crappy dynasty anymore! Wait... Crappy Dynasty... isn't that a redundancy?" lol Sorry Deg people... Anyway... BRING IT ON!!!! Where's my horn? *looking franticlly* Cullen
  13. Scratch that! I saw the Avitar and thought it was Geoff... must be the valve oil I have been drinking. Cullen.
  14. Geoff, That was one of the Longest Posts I have seen you post!!!! As for Mouth Peices, Vince you should remember Gino's little rant about Mellos.... 6V end of story. Cullen.

I sent you a private message, however if it didn't work send me an e-mail... Strad526@yahoo.com Peace, Cullen
  16. HIRE ME!!! I'll earn my money... Cullen I wonder when people are going to hire me?
  17. When I first started Drum Corps I used a Deg 2 valve soprano. Hated it because it didn't have a 3rd valve, but other then that it played well, good projection, little resistance. When I "graduated" up to a bigger corps I borrowed a friends horn (He marched Magic of Orlando back in I think 1996 or 1997) and I don't remember much about the horn except when I got it was very dirty and it took me like 3 days to clean it. My little time at Cadets in 99 I actually used a Crossmen horn didn't really pay much attention to it since I really felt like a fish out of water... When I went to Brigs I started on the DEG "tune any note" soprano and got my thumb stuck in the saddle and broke my thumb. I then passed it off for one of the other sops that wasn't a "t.a.n." horn................... HATED IT THE ENTIRE SUMMER!!!!!!!! I am use to playing on a custome Large Bore, 72 bell, reverse tunning slide, heavy weight Bach Stradivarious. Playing on that deg was like digging my Bundy Student trumpet out of the closet... ehhhhh This past summer it was like a cornicopia (sp?) of horns for me... I started out on a Deg, the same horn I used for the most part in 2001. Then I borrowed a Power Bore from one of the other sops. Then Back to the Deg. Until about July when the guy who let me borrow his Power Bore bought another Kanstul this time a standard bore. I cleaned it up, worked the valves, added some bumpers on the slides, changed the pads and put new springs in (had them laying around from old horns). It played Great!!!!!!!! As far as I am concerned If I never have to touch a Deg horn again I could die a Happy Man! I am in the market to buy a Kanstul Sop... but being a senior in college, those lovely school loans are begining to haunt me. Kanstul is the way to go for me... I know a lot of people who like the Degs... and that is what it's all about... preference! As for key relation... I like the G horns especially in the Sopranos obviously being a minor 3rd lower they are darker, however it feels like drum corps, when I hear "TRUMPETS, Take it back to measure 12" it feels like Marching Band... The Benefits for Bb horns... I could use one of my own horns and wouldn't have to spend $700 on a bugle... DCA Should go all Kanstul... lol I know I am in a corps endorsed by Dynasty... and I think the Brass guy was upset with me when I said: "Crappy Deg, wait... isn't that a Redundancy?" Sorry guy, didn't mean anything by it... It would be cool to see mixed horn lines... Going all Bb didn't really solve the problem of bringing over Marching Band people in my mind. Why not Some G, F, Bb and C instruments... I know some arrangers would go ape since they don't know how to hit "transpose" in Finale. Sopranos will be fine in Bb or G why not have both in one corps? Mellos (if you are going "concert style" on us) should be in F Bari/Euphs in C Contras in BBb or C And people who say "#### it, it's a trumpet not a Soprano!"... Dude, aren't trumpets the "soprano" voice of the brass chior known as drum corps? Tubas, same thing... just say Basses if the word Contra offends you... Mellophones, cool... it would be nice to see more French. Lover of the Kanstul, Cullen
  18. Magic and Boston Close? As for Conducting... well it's a style thing... find which one best suits you and your corps and go for it... stay relaxed and work on tempo stability, the biggest problem with Conductor's /DM's is that they slow down. Aaron Osminki (sp?) can probably give you some better advice then me especially since he conducted for PR. As a conductor in "real life" (had to laugh) I prefer to march then to be on the podium. Peace, Cullen
  19. <<<I guess we'll all just have to go to Scranton and cheer on our respective favorite corps and be happy we're getting entertained by these great groups... regardless of who wins... or by how much. After all, it is about the audience in DCA, is it not? --Miker >>> Well Said! See everyone on Saturday! Best of luck to all! To Ange, Steve and Trish in Bucc's guard, see you guys soon havin' fun!!!! To Kilian, Katie, Tina, Jamie and Bob in Bush! You go!!! Peace Cullen ^0^
