  1. I like Bread as well. My favorite was "Baby I'm-A Want You."
  2. What about an A-B transition: The Audubon Bon Bons
  3. Actually, that's not what I said. On another forum, I was discussing two active Southern California corps. I then said (and I quote) "The Kingsmen are another matter entirely. They can all rot in whatever level of hell the drum corps gods want to assign them to." At any rate, my opinions are personal, and do not reflect on SoCal Dream or its relationship to the Kingsmen. The two corps have performed and amicably associated with each other often, and will do so again this weekend. I'm not surprised that you're unable to find anyone who is willing to defend the Kingmen's director's actions. That should tell you more than I ever could.
  4. Wow, I don't know who you are, but I'm surprised that anyone who knew me would believe that I, or any member of my family, would have anything to do with the Kingsmen. We did not enjoy being raped by Rocco's Raiders, and we have no interest in wearing faded blue. One thing the Kingsmen got right: You are known by your actions.
  5. Whatever they tell you to play . . . down an octave.
  6. Why the six o'clock start time, with an almost hour-long break in the middle? Why not have a later start time coupled with a conventional break, which will still finish the show at a reasonable hour? Here's the view from the field for the first few corps:
  7. Great. And I really miss the starting gun. See what you can do for me, OK?
  8. Nothing beats the power of a G bugle in experienced hands.
  9. The Spirit of Troy -- The University of Southern California Trojan Marching Band. Here's a nifty move we lifted from the Troopers:
  10. From the mouth of legendary marching instructor Charlie Groh: "Center your hole!" "Control your meat!" "March erect!"
  11. From Heat Wave's web site: Good Bye, Farewell Heat Wave Inactive ORLANDO, FLORIDA - May 5, 2007 - After substantial recruitment efforts, the membership of the Heat Wave Drum and Bugle Corps unanimously agreed to go inactive. Due to newly created DCA rules regarding minimum corps size, there are currently no plans to return to the field of competition. According to the Board President, Bill Slover, "Heat Wave leaves drum corps and DCA with zero debt". In 2007 Heat Wave was able to raise nearly 50,000 dollars to bring the corps out of debt. The immediate plan for the corps is to complete contractual obligations for performances. Many members have asked to stay and perform at conventions as well as other events. Heat Wave would like to thank our fans and community for allowing us to be part of the local and drum corps community. The board would further like to thank the many dedicated members and support staff for a tremendous effort. Finally we would like to thank John (JJ) Johnson for his tireless efforts attempting to rebuild the corps. Heat Wave Drum and Bugle Corps Last Updated ( May 21, 2007 at 03:12 PM )

  14. I marched with him in the Velvet Knights in 1974.
  15. Velvet Knights, 1977. Love those busses -- 1950's era Greyhounds. We had a lot of trouble getting together to rehearse. Our rehearsal "facility" was the dirt on the inside of a freeway cloverleaf behind Angel Stadium. We never seemed to have everyone there at the same time. So on the day we left for second tour we stopped at a rest stop and formed a company front so that someone could count noses. 128!
  16. SoCal Dream used one in 2005 for the "whistling" parts of Kill Bill. Here's a picture of a very big man with a very little . . . um, er . . . horn: But, it was the Velvet Knights in 1976 that introduced the two-valve prototype:
  17. Penalties have a long and honored tradition in drum corps. My favorite part of drum corps shows used to be watching the "Timing and Penalties" judge. He'd be the one firing the starting gun (I really miss that), running his stopwatch on breaks and concert formations, checking to see that no one got in front of the Nationals during the color presentation, making sure everyone went around the pylon at the goal line before they turned to troop the stands . . . The good T&P judges would run around more than the marching judges would.
