  1. SCV in the 70's doing a high mark time in a company front with the white bucks. Crossmen did a box collapsing that seemed to keep collapsing when they did their Superman show. I think it was around 1979 or 80. Tony Smith was their drill writer at the time. BD did a circle unwind thing in thelate 70's early 80's. Bridgemen company front on their knees Iconic moves = Garfield Z pull; 27's Danny Boy wheel; Rockford File feature for Phantom; Troopers burst
  2. Sorry for the "mispost" Regarding the topic, I had asked if the Op was serious. Is the off season that boring this topic was started? C'mon and keep with things that have substance, even if they are controversial or argumentative but something that elicits better discussion than cereal.
  3. I don't think this qualifies as a random encounter as much as it was a fortunate encounter. Years ago I was about to head out on tour with BAC but I wasn't able to travel with the corps at the start of the second half of the tour. It 1982 and a lot of not so good stuff was happening. We had just come back from a disasterous 3 weeks in Europe and were to go out for the balance of tour. First stop, Whitewater. So when I left the corps in Boston they were to get on busses and head to WW. I thought I would make an adventure of it; fly to Milwaukee and hitch to Whitewater. You could hitch rides back in those days. So I got to Milwaukee in the early evening and took a taxi from the airport, believe it or not, to a highway interchange where I knew there would be people heading to the show (DCI Midwest)and I could hitch a ride pretty easily. I thought I should make a sign to make it easier to get picked up but as I headed to a K-Mart to get stuff to make a sign, it closed for the night. Now reality started to set in. How was I really going to get to WW? I figured it might be along night so when I saw a Dunkin Donuts nearby I thought I needed coffee for this impending sojourn. So I am sitting in DD's not really knowing exactly where I was; I think West Allis but maybe not, pondering this bad idea and how I was going to meet the corps, I look up and in walks someone I knew from 27th Lancers, Jack Cash. Our "rivals". Thankfully we had been getting past the old bad feelings between each corps by this time, and I had known Jack for a little while. This is both the random and fortunate part. How he came to pick this particular DD to stop at on his way to WW I'll never know. But he sees me and nonchalantly says Hi, like we were in a DD back home meeting for coffee. I asked him if he had a car (kind of obvious) and if he wouldn't mind giving me a ride to Whitewater. So he did and we enjoyed a bit of drink once we arrived there. This was a most fortunate encounter for me and I am happy it tunred out as good as it did considering how bad an idea it really was. Oh and BAC never did come to Whitewater. There was an issue with busses and paying for them (sounds a lot like what hapened with other corps recently) so the corps left Boston too late to make it to Whitewater. Now I had to get myself to Michigan City where they did get to, to start the second part of tour.
  4. I sense you missed my meaning. Oh well other posters have made the point.
  5. Hmm. No company fronts, no box rotation, no box compression or expansions. Isn't everything a direct repeat or variation on what has been done before? That to me is what pushes the creativity- how to do something a little differently or better than before. Now if you manage something entirely new, all the better.
  6. Don't limit this to math skills but also to sensibility. Cadets do a tribute to Star??? I wouldn't think a multi time champion would do a tribute to a corps like Star. I look at Tribute rock and roll band as a wanna be band. Although entertaining, they are a non-serious novelty. Maybe that would apply here.
  7. Great photos Liahona, thanks. Congratulations to the Crusaders this year. What a great year. Look forward to seeing thrm get better next year. Congrats to Thompson. You are an impressive young man. The corps will miss you but not forget you. Lastly, I read the note about the girl in the corps who marched with sight in one eye and she is losing that. She is an amazing inspiration to all her fellow Ginats and to us alumni to remind us why we marched. For the love of drum corps and for the love of performing. Her story represents the best of drum corps. She is a True Blue Crusader..a Giant forever.
  8. In 1978 in Oklahoma City, National Guard Armory, blazing hot, no A/C, so they left the garage door open to let air /breeze in. "excuse me sir, are there any insects in here, like scorpions?" "Well yes there are, but y'all don't need to worry because they're afraid of people...it's the spiders that are the problem and not the green ones but the brown ones." " Oh but how do you tell the difference in the dark?" No one slept very well that night.
  9. First off, keep religion out of the behavioral shaping of marching members. It should be the mm's personal choice and pursuit and if something is made available to them in the operation of a corps then they should pursue it but keep it individualized. Second; raise a responsible trustworthy kid and let them grow with an appropriate for them corps you as their parent thoroughly researched Third; volunteer be witness to corps behavior and learn what is truly needing correction or cessation or what in the grand scheme of things is pretty harmless Fourth; see if the corps you select lives up to your research. What is the member makeup? Do they have sufficient staffing? What are their touring accommodations? Fifth; check up on your kid during the season. They won't mind. Well they shouldn't! Sixth; remember stories often are exaggerated. Gather facts if you hear of an incident. Seventh; set YOUR ground rules for your kid. He/ she is ultimately your FULL responsibility. Corps are responsible for kids safety and well being while in their care but that doesn't mean you say " phew, he/ she gone for the summer, let's go places and eat things" ( 3 Stooges ref. sorry) Lastly; trust them, call them, cut the apron strings. Oh and give them plenty of condoms:-)
  10. 1. Santa Clara (they put it all together) 2. Phantom (almost...again) 3. Blue Devils (slight set back because of new show..mama) 4. Crown (percussion slight pick up, brass drops) 5. Cadets (Does an easter show but it doesn't work...bunny problems with PETA) 6. BAC (improves again..playing somone elses "famous" music H better; right Cop?) 7. Bluecoats They don't get worse, everyone just gets better) 8. Cavies (doing a two step insted of a dubstep to see if that works) 9. Blue Knights (steps it up a bit) 10. Crossmen (momemtum baby) 11. Spirit (slight toe stub) 12. Madison (but everyone will scream for them more than Crown and Surf) Disclaimer: These are predictions with nothng to base them on at all just like the other predictions here that plug corps in places :judt because. I predict better predictions would be best suited for late winter when staff changes are done and camps are had and shows are selected. Have a good off season everyone.

  14. You have learned quickly and well. Sovsorryvto hear of your past experience but what you've mentioned seems like an appropriate amount of due diligence. I am happy to see you've considered BAC. They work with parents/kids on payment plans. They've been through the financial problems, well documented. But a key factor in this is for your kids to look at all the corps to determine which ones appeal to his musical liked, his marching likes. Select one two or more, then due your due diligence about how they are structured, how they tour, how they teach, how they are supported (alumni, volunteers). Also consider proximity and winter camp requirements. There is a lot to think about. Best of luck to you.

  16. Lowell MA, Regal Theater. 1st time to this theater. Does it sell out? Haven't bought ticket yet
  17. There is a certain amount of irony in this.
  18. Hi Holton, I wasn't directing my response to/at you but more relative to what you had posted. Kind of thinking out loud and hoping someone from Teal (the new Teal) would be listening. I am sure there are many people involved with this organization who have the best interest at heart. But I have lived through the rebirth of BAC in the "Boston" days and can speak from experience, that being conservative and patient is paramount to future success. It also takes a lot of people to make it work. Plan, plan, plan, then execute the plan rigoroulsy.
  19. Maybe it's me but since Teal has only been gone for a few weeks (and especially seeing how appeared to unravel) is it at all possible that a sufficiently good business plan has been developed, to engender trust in the abilities of a new organization? Mind you the 2012 DCI season is not yet over! I would be concerned there is again an endevour being pursued, built on hopes rather than reality. I wish them all the best but I should think a truly vetted and viable busines plan and a realistic, acheivable mission statement has been composed; along with a board of directors and an executive corps leadership/structure is assembled before they go too much further. Maybe this announcement is a bit premature. Want some advice? Slow this down.
  20. Was this the same day that someone got hit & killed (6 others hurt) by lightning at the NASCAR race at Pocono? Seems like it was a call on the safe side.
