  1. This was posted on Break.com...a great site for videos and odd photos. It is a snare solo by Ivan Pacheco from 2004. Break.com I & E solo
  2. It's not "me", but my brother Jeff (AKA Flash that year) is the blond with the sunglasses. They are lined up waiting to go on for DCI Midwest Prelims in 1981. He'll be wearing the same uniform next Wednesday and Friday. I couldn't be more proud of him!

  4. I'm not being childish, I looked at his background to see where his point of view was formed. Based on his own assertion that he only marched and taught bands, I can safely say that his paradigm is different than mine. I certainly would not insult someone on half ###ed information and assume that if one's viewpoint differs from mine then that person must be a "bando" (A term I have never used). Think before you post lest you embarass yourself.
  5. So, as a band guy, it's what you like. As a drum corps guy, I don't want our activity to be confused with bands. Singing is fine for high school groups, but I think it takes away from the drum corps activity.
  6. I attended a show in Sun Prairie a few weeks ago that displayed the inevitable progression of drum corps. It was the Championships of a low level competitive summer marching band circuit. Bad sax and flute solos, un-understandable props used for the sake of having a prop and clarinets leaning back and wailing with their bells to the box...it was painful. Then the Madison Scouts Alumni Reunion Project performed on the same field as the marching bands. Familiar music was nice, but the drill looked slow by today's standards. The dichotomy between the bands and the MSARP was huge. I love old style drum corps. I understand and accept some of the changes that have been made over the past decade, but I loathe where the activity is headed. I am no longer a drum corps fan; rather I stay committed because of the kids. I know we are still building the same great citizens now that we were back when I marched in the 1970s and 1980s. My friends from then are still my friends, that will never change. But I don’t believe singing belongs in an acoustic activity. People way smarter than I have said “drum corps needs to evolve like marching bands in order to pull large crowds and make money”, which is probably true, but I won’t be attending any shows unless I am obligated by my position. I haven’t for several years. For the record…I like what Devils did with amps in 2004. I like how Cavies have pushed the activity. I think amped pits can add nice color to charts, but any sound originating in the human body should not be amped. Woodwinds, god no! This is my opinion and mine alone. It is not meant to represent any organization with which I am associated. Hate me if you must, but leave everyone else out of it.
  7. Stef, I was talking to Jeff when you guys sent my brother over to get me to leave (something about needing wine after the sax solo)!!!! I didn't know you two hadn't met yet.
  8. Looking at trend lines from the past two years, juxtaposed with this year, there is a possibility that Madison may place in the top five. The show has a lot more room for cleaning, unlike the past two seasons when they were rolling along until Allentown, only to drop 3 spots during the last week of the season. If Bluecoats and Crown were able to do it, why do some people think the season is over for Madison? Last week, several enlightened posters had Madison placing 14th again. Three weeks is a looooong time, folks. Relax and enjoy the ride!
  9. I heard people taliking about this at the Sunday MSARP rehearsal as well. We can't necessarily read into high ticket sales as a direct desire for old time drum corps, but I am fairly certain that Madison supporters, family members, freinds, and everyone else interested in seeing the MSARP perform will come out in droves. Although the current Scouts and the MSARP are performing on Wednesday August 9, it will be an entirely different engery on Friday night in Camp Randall. My brother's (Actual brother, not my other 3000 Madison Scout brothers!) family can't make it Wednesday, but all 5 of them have purchased tickets for Semi Finals.
  10. The Stadium Bar does sell food. I eat there often and it's not bad. Cops like it too, if that means anything.......
  11. The Stadium Bar is the official fans site for Madison Scouts. It is the best location for quick entrance and egress to Camp Randall. The outside area has lots of room for the DCPers to gather and finally put faces to names. I'll be at Uncle Z's on Tuesday, golfing in the MDBCA $1,000,000 Shoot-Out golf outing at Hawks Landing Golf Club on Wednesday, the Madison Scouts/Madison Scouts' Alumni Reunion Project/Jubal/Capital Sound exhibition Wednesday night, and then Camp Randall/Stadium Bar the remainder of the time. How do we identify one another????????
  12. Hi Rich, The best bet really is the MDBCA $1,000,000 Shoot-Out at Hawk's Landing. It's a great course and it's close to Madison. University Ridge is nearby, but to golf with drum corps fans and benefit the Madison Scouts just makes more sense! The possible prize money is great for all comers. We will be wrapped up in time to make it to the Wednesday night combined performance of the Madison Scouts, Madison Scouts Alumni Reunion Progect, Jubal, and Capital Sound. That venue is on the same side of the city as the golf course. Advertisement to follow..... The Madison Drum & Bugle Corps Association, Inc. and its premier performance group, the Madison Scouts, will stage their first annual $1,000,000 Shoot-Out golf outing at Hawks Landing Golf Club in Madison, WI, on Wednesday, August 9. The start time is 11:30 AM. Scheduled during the week of the Drum Corps International Championships that will be held at the University of Wisconsin's Camp Randall Stadium, it is open to local golfers from across Southern Wisconsin, as well as drum corps fans in Madison for the competition. The $150.00 cost per golfer includes 18-holes, a cart, box lunch, 19th-hole cash bar and and steak dinner, along with participation in the Longest Drive, $1,000,000 Hole-In-One and $25,000 Putt contests. Rental clubs are available in the course pro show for $21.10, including tax for out-of-town golfers who don't want to bring their own clubs to Madison. At the afternoon-ending awards banquet, there will also be a silent auction, with dining certificates, vacation packages and sports memorabilia among the items up for bid. Proceeds will help fund the international champion Madison Scouts Drum & Bugle Corps. The $1,000,000 Hole-In-One contest calls for the special tee shot prize to be split between the winner and the Madison Drum & Bugle Corps Association, Inc., an IRS-registered, 501©(3) non-profit organization. Sponsors are also being accepted for tees, the banquet meal, carts and the insurance policy covering the pay-out for the major cash prizes. American Family Insurance, with their international headquarters located in Madison, has committed to be one of two prime sponsors. The number of participants is limited to 36 foursomes or 144 total golfers. Registration form at http://www.madisonscouts.org/pages/golf.htm For further information, call the Madison Scouts office at 608-837-0707.
  13. In 1982, they talked to us about the Madison Darth Vader look during rehearsals and before shows. Should that have been disheartening? What is the Scouts' style? Is it the Scouts from the '30s, '40s, '50s, '60s, '70s or your five years that you'd like to see? The current members "signed up" for modern drum corps performed by the Madison Scouts. I think what is inside the uniform is far more important than what is performed in any show during any era. I respect your opinion, Brian. I just think it stinks. Keep in mind that this is not an official opinion of anyone but me. MYNWA (From a 1982 Madison Scout who did drum corps different than they did in 1986 - 1990.)
  14. You're welcome! Jeff Manion and his committee get the credit for the way the show is run. Jeff has a incredible project plan in place and is the King of follow-up. DOP could not happen without Jeff. Scott and Brian measured out the seat widths...too bad they can't do Camp Randall! The Reunion Project could not fit the camp schedule with DOP...it would have been great, but Randy, Scott, and Scott were unable to arrange it. So...come out and see Madison past and present on Wednesday August 9 at the same stadium. They'll be joined by Jubal and Capital Sound. We may have as many as 500 current and former Madison Scouts singing Never Walk at the end of the event. The first corps will step off promptly at 8:00 PM and the show should be concluded by 9:30 PM. All seating will be general admission and tickets are $10.00 for adults and $20.00 for a family (two adults, up to four children under age 12). Fans should be prepared to pay cash as there will be no printed tickets, no checks accepted and no credit card charges.
  15. Wow...I change clothes everyday. I wonder of my students are actually reacting the same way when I walk into the classroom. If so; I suck!
  16. How about we add a caveat? Only those who have seen every corps this season can predict the outcome on Agust 12th. :P
  17. It looks like it could happen again tomorrow night. With more than a full day of rehearsals, there could be major improvements this time of year.
  18. Ticket sales are picking up. Don't wait to long! With the Cavies and 'Coats neck and neck it could be a night o' high drama! When was the last time 'Coats beat Cavies?
  19. Thank you, Clay. That was a tremendously mature approach. I love the current group of Madison Scouts. They represent everything that is great about being a Man of Madison. And I think you're right about the show. It's demanding, and it will get clean. It's still early on my calendar! MYNWA
  20. As an alumnus, I disagree with the original poster. I marched in 1982, could have been back until '85 if not for the a signed contract to join the Marine Corps, and I was shocked when I heard the 1983 show. It wasn't Slaughter, Soup, and Ice Castles. The Soup arrangement they did wasn't the Soup arrangement I played, thr uniform they wore wasn't a dressed up janitor's uniform, and I was OK with all of it. I'm not going to throw the corps under the bus because the music genre isn't the same that I played. These kids work harder than I did when I marched (The drill is like a five mile run). I respect the current generation for the effort they put in and their desire to be a part of the same fraternity that I wanted to join from the first time I saw the Scouts in 1975. Admittedly, I wear green colored glasses, and knowing the guys personally sways my opinion, but I like Madison. Just like in 1975, 1982, and the corps that will be fielded for years to come. Just MY opinion, and not that of any group with which I may be affiliated.
  21. It takes a soprano to make this picture look good! You see me and Scott Pearson in this one. Madison 1982
  22. Uncle Z, it was you who turned me onto Zappa, but here are the lyrics that make me think of drum corps. Like a crunchin twig, n up jumped the devil...hes about this big... He had a red suit on An a widows peak An then a pointed tail n like a sulphur reek Yes, it was him awright I sweared I knowed it was He had some human flesh Stuck underneath his claws You know it looked to me Like it was t_tty skin I said, you sonofab_tch! cause I was mad at him, Well he just got out his floss n started cleanin his fang So I shot him with my shooter Said: bang bang bang ...... She said I got me three beers and a fistful of downs And Im gonna get ripped, so f__k, you clowns! Then she gave us the finger, it was rigid and stiff Thats when the devil, he farted And she went right over the cliff! The devil was mad, I took off to my pad I swear I do declare, how did she get back there?
