  1. Again ... you are confusing intonation with dissonance ... there is a difference. From what I heard they were playing the dissonance with great intonation. If they are playing dissonance with great intonation they should be getting credit ... not be penalized!
  2. Boy, you can really twist things around to support your viewpoint. Have you ever listened to the original City of Glass by Kenton ... I suppose you think that Stan Kenton "sounds terrible" as well. Also .. have you ever tried to play dissonance IN TUNE ... it's not easy.
  3. Are you fracking crazy? I was also at Denver, watching BD in the parking lot warming up and during the show. Out of the many years I've been following them this brass line, along with these instruments, were the most balanced, with the best intonation I've ever heard from them. Maybe the altitude was affecting your hearing!
  4. When DCI was formed in 1972, only the top 12 corps ("Full Members") could vote on anything. Corps 13-25 ("Associate Members") could "sit at the table", but couldn't vote. Corps 26 and lower (I don't remember how many corps ... but I do remember there were 3 days of prelims ... with none of this Quarters/Prelims stuff) weren't even allowed at the DCI meetings. Also, in 1972, DCI also had an "All-Girls" Championship, separate from the A-Corps (now World) championship. I don't know their participation ... probably none.
  5. I passed a lot of them on the elevator!
  6. Once you are on, don't forget to hit the "Play" Button!
  7. Yeah ... I can see BD videos on the BD app, but can't see DCI videos on the DCI app ... what's up with that?
  8. Also ... Why is there no information for Open Class corps? They are relegated to the bottom of the "Corps" listing, and when you go there, there's no info on any of the OC corps, just a listing. I guess this shows the importance of Open Class corps to DCI.
  9. Be careful ... If you tap on "Corps" on the bottom ... and scroll down and tap on "Open Class Corps" you are taken to list of Open Class corps (to which there is NO supplementary info). THEN ... if you click on the little "home" icon, you are not taken back to "Corps", you are taken to "DCI.org Mobile", which looks like it takes you to the same places, only it has this DCI.org Mobile banner (which eats up screen real estate) ... and it presents you with the same information in a different format. It's sort of confusing.
  10. Wow ... checking on shows for this weekend: - Bowling Green: Ticket information coming soon! - Normal: Ticket information not available at this time - Clovis: Tickets on sale soon! - Stanford: Tickets on sale soon! - Arlington: Ticket information coming soon! One would hope that if the shows are this weekend, the ticket info would be up!
  11. I thought this thread was about 2010 Fan Network general questions & VOD ... ... not about shows or opinions on judging. DCP is getting a bit "loose" on staying on thread topics!
  12. I'm a fan of BD, SCV, Phantom, Cavies, Colts, Spirit, Troopers, drum corps past, drum corps present, the future of drum corps, Senior Corps, Jr. Corps., Blast ... etc. Why does that matter? This is a thread about BD Mediabox.
  13. SWEET! BD just (again) raised the bar on Drum Corps media!
  14. ... World Class Directors voting Hopkins and Gibbs off the Board ... Just as a point of fact ... Gibbs hasn't been on the DCI Board for awhile now.
  15. Great post Tony ... cut's right to the "meat". There's the "entertainment value" of the larger corps vs. the "family values of 'let's watch little Bobby perform'" ... those should be 2 different types of shows, just as Las Vegas shows are different from Community Theater. I can't agree more ... I HATE spending a lot of time watching the "crap schleping". That's gotta go. I came to watch drum corps, not the Bekins movers. And finally ... I do think the G7 know something about successfully running drum corps ... they know the intimate workings of DCI, and probably have a lot more information that all of DCP posters put together! Again ... great post!
  16. Hi Ray ... I feel your pain ... I'm an old "rotor-valve" guy myself. IMHO, it is the people who post all the negative c*ap on DCP that are sucking the life out of me, ergo I'm only reading DCP when I feel strong enough! But, I think the DCP postings are finally switching from "b*tching mode" to "substantive discussion mode", which is becoming more interesting. Also, I know a few of the directors of the G7 ... these are smart people. Another DCP post said (and I paraphrase) "they know more about running a drum corps in their little pinky than we do collectively". They won't let the activity die, because if it does, they will die. I'm not a "George fanboi", but George is only 1/7th of the G7. I wish DCP posters would "let the George stuff go" ... George was only the messenger for ALL 7 corps. I'm sure the G7 directors have "seen some sort of handwriting on the wall" and hence came up with this proposal. Again, they are smart people and I have to assume that they are 1) looking out for themselves, individually and collectively; and 2) see that the current DCI model isn't working ... hence the proposal (read that again ... "proposal" not "takeover") ... that was presented in the normal flow of DCI business ... noone banged their shoe on the table and walked out. I don't agree with all the G7 points, and I'm glad to see the open discussion on DCP, as there are a number of good alternatives / considerations brought up. But, Ray ... remember all the old VFW and AL guys who thought that The Combine / DCI "was the end of drum corps" ... it turned out that change was OK.
  17. EXCELLENT POST! I agree with you on not liking the voting monopoly. I truly believe that the Board of Directors should be 1) comprised of people passionate about the activity; 2) a set of people with a diverse set of requisite business skills (i.e., legal, marketing, finance, etc.); 3) (IMHO most important) comprised of people with no direct ties to corps (i.e., no Corps Directors, no members of Corps Board of Directors). As a corollary to #3 - the participating corps should NOT be the ones to elect the Board of Directors ... if there are corps that can band together and oust a board, the board has no real power.
  18. Historically, DCI has been a group of corps directors deciding on tour planning, judging, and marketing. It has evolved to an organization that puts a majority of its effort into promoting it's headliner shows (i.e., Indy, San Antonio, Atlanta, etc.) DCI, IMHO, should be restructured to remove all corps directors from the Board of Directors. It should be run by a board who is passionate about the drum corps activity, has a mix of the business skills that are required to run a multi-million dollar organization, and no ties to any of the participating corps. Parents/family/friends of the participants. Drum Corps Alumni. Other musicians (i.e., marching bands). 1) Nationwide touring corps; 2) Regional touring corps; and 3) local corps. Only those that are able to safely and can afford to tour nationwide will be allowed in the Nationwide circuit. Corps that can only afford to safely travel in their region will be allowed to join the Regional tours. All other corps should be restricted to a reasonable distance for their shows.
  19. JW ... you know of what you speak!  :worthy: :worthy:
  20. I forgot about this! ONLY the G12 (i.e. the top 12) could vote on anything. However, the corps that placed 13-25 could "sit at the table", but couldn't vote. Corps from 26 down, weren't even allowed to attend the meetings! (And at that time there were over 250 corps in the US.) Such were the original rules of DCI, much more restrictive than now.
  21. I've been on the Board of 7 non-profits, and you are almost correct. From an attorney friend;: "There is no general requirement that Board minutes be public - though some jurisdictions have laws that they must be available to members." And if you're in California: California Corporations Code section 6333 (under Division 2, Part 2 -- Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporations): "The accounting books and records and minutes of proceedings of the members and the board and committees of the board shall be open to inspection upon the written demand on the corporation of any member at any reasonable time, for a purpose reasonably related to such person's interests as a member." However, if you are not a membership based organization, there is still no requirement to make the minutes public. If you are in New Jersey, the state statute is silent about the public having access to the minutes or the names and addresses of the members. Since the members have to run through some hoops to get records, it appears that the public does not have a legal right to review the minutes or have access to the list of members. Of course the allegation of fraud or conflict of interest in a court proceeding by someone from the public may open those books to inspection as part of discovery.
  22. I thought the birth of DCI was because of "The Combine" breaking away from VFW and AL. If I remember correctly, the combine consisted of only the following corps: Troopers Blue Stars Cavaliers Santa Clara Vanguard (was there one or two more?) They put out their own LP in 1971 ... "Combine West '71" with a picture of the drum majors on the cover. So, would you call the members of The Combine the "G4"? And if you were VFW or AL fanboys, wouldn't you call them "the Greedy 4"? Also, if you were an AL or VFW fanboy, wouldn't you call for a boycott of these corps records, or t-shirts, or shows they were now in? Would you get all pissy about them breaking away. The AL/VFW fanboys probably did. Yeah ... and THAT worked!
  23. So ... audiodb ... if you have the proposal, it would be nice if you post it, so the rest of us could become informed!
