  1. Depends on how far away you're sitting, but yeah generally the eye can't see the difference between 720p and 1080p on typical sets at typical distances. However, I still want as much resolution packed into the recordings as possible for when I get my wall-sized screen... next year, yeah, that's it.
  2. Full show, one work: Le Sacre du Printemps
  3. I guess it depends on what you're familiar with going in. Phantom and Glassmen are the only finalists that didn't include at least some music I was already familiar with. Glassmen is the only one I can't now hum at least part of.
  4. The only similarity I see is a common musical selection, and not even the main one. The primary works in the two shows were different. The design was wildly different. I'm kind of tired of comparing them. That said, I voted SCV 2010. I think SCV 2010 is a more honest, less self-indulgent design, and has better music and more entertaining visuals. I think Star gets a lot of unconscious credit (from me, too! not slamming anyone) for it having been their last year.
  5. I don't feel that DCP is very negative at all. It's certainly a lot less negative than people typically are in the real world about any other topic. There are some posters who just slam everything that's happened since 2000 or 1970 or whatever, but they're a tiny minority. The thing is, in a given season everyone is going to see shows they just don't enjoy, or see shows that have one or two things that just really bother them, and yes, as Michael Boo said, people are far more motivated to talk about things they don't like than things that they do like. And yes, while the season is going on and rankings are being made by different people with different criteria, it can feel frustrating, and posting here is one way to vent that feeling. But generally I think most of the posts here are positive and respectful.
  6. Absolutely. Best year in a loooong time, maybe ever, in terms of the number of truly enjoyable shows.
  7. Where is this from? I thought dues were like $2500 tops. Maybe they're including all the other costs?
  8. Decades can start in any year. 1986-1995 is a decade. The 00s, whatever you want to call them, are 2000-2009. However, I think most of these threads are being pretty clear what they mean by "decade" by quoting it. We just finished 2010. It makes sense to include it. If you're going to drop anything, drop 2000. In 2015 we'll want to vote on the best shows of the past decade, and that decade will be 2006-2015.
  9. IIRC, they started Division II, won that in 1994 and then they've been in Division I/World Class finals every year since except 2002.
  10. I haven't listened to the QF APDs, but I do remember that the Cadets show had a LOT of bass on the final hit. Could be overloading your system, maybe, if others aren't having the problem. Of course, there's only so much the DCI mixers can do since they don't have original audio streams. If the corps mixed the pit poorly, then that is not very fixable.
  11. In no real order: Boston: side-hops Boston: the loudest ever ballad climax Crown: opening number Crown: baris twirling flags with their feet Bluecoats: final minute Blue Devils: gauzy "Laura" pit work between brass hits Cavaliers: this is my rifle (including the rifle throws across the field) Cavaliers: triangle formation with guard in the center Cavaliers: rifle throwaways at the ending Blue Stars: hands free guard work Blue Stars: finals week ending SCV: accelerando into tight circle Phantom: the entrance Cadets: entrance, when the flags first pop out old skool style Madison: opening push
  12. They had one at Kalamazoo I think. I did not attempt to participate. I think I was dazed by the sun... I don't really remember that show. Anyone who goes next year, try to get seats as low and to the right as you can while still enjoying the show. The sun was BRUTAL until the last two or three corps.
  13. According to the DCI.org news item: http://www.dci.org/news/view.cfm?news_id=4...e6-f96afc662bd4 So it sounds like the Normal show will probably still happen, though it won't be a "DCI Premier Event" or be associated with the Music for All camp. Hopefully the Normal show will still have a good lineup. I just moved from southwest Virginia to central Illinois this summer and it was sad to leave the awesome Salem VA show behind, but having the Normal show so close worked out even better since the lineup was stronger. I mean, this year, Crown, Cavies, Cadets, Blue Stars, Madison--it was awesome!
  14. Opinion is split on 2009's show more than I expected. I loved 2008 and 2007 and they have great moments, but looking back, 2009 just blew them away in design and music (selections, arrangement, and playing), and the general performance. There is not a moment of the 2009 show when I'm not on the edge of my seat eager to see the next bit. 2009 The Grass is Always Greener 2007 Triple Crown 2008 Finis 2006 In.Trance.It 2005 Angelus 2010 A Second Chance 2000 Mask of Zorro 2001 Industry 2002 Greek Mythology - never saw it 2004 Bohemia - despite the good moments, the bad ones were worse than they were good
  15. Yeah, but Hopkins is the person ultimately responsible for the rule change (yeah yeah, majority of corps directors voted in favor blah blah). And anyway, that's exactly why it would be awesome for the Cadets to the be the corps to do it.
  16. So given the glut of "favorite of the decade" polls around here at the moment, I was poking around at various shows on the Fan Network and I was inspired to rewatch most of Star's shows, and they had some great ones. Every year has some amazing playing, and they were pushing the limits on the visuals (hot pink uniforms! alien "flags"!) and repertoire (hey, I love Belshazzar's Feast, but I would not expect it in a drum corps show) from the very start. Everyone talks about 1991 and 1993, and justifiably so, but those weren't the only great shows they put on. Despite all that, I still rate Roman Images the top of the top. And just to keep it interesting, and maybe spread the poll results around, what was your least favorite? Not to hate, but I'm just curious. Personally, the theme in 1992 was pushed so hard that it turned me off entirely to anything good they were doing out there. But then I'm squeamish about that kind of super-positive-feelgood show in general. So as cheesy as the ET/Star Wars theme was, I voted for 92. Finally, I never saw Brass Theatre or Blast but I wonder if there are folks out there who really did enjoy those efforts?
  17. Unfortunately the realm of copyright especially regarding anything involving music is really complicated re songwriter, arrangement, and every time there's a different way of accessing that content, either live, CD, MP3, video streams, DVD, Blu-Ray, etc, there are additional rights to acquire and it's not always 100% clear who to get what rights from. There are clearinghouses to work with, but sometimes the rightsholders themselves will not have approved a certain work for a certain use and then there has to be negotiation, etc etc. It looks messy because it is. Just like law and the tax code, it's never 100% clear what the right answer is in certain situations.
  18. Agreed. Best children's/science museum I've ever been to, hands down, both when I was seven and when my daughter was seven.
  19. I know the decision isn't up to you, but this doesn't make sense in a number of ways. The video on demand includes this unlicensed content. And I'm not sure what "fairness" re judging has to do with what you put on recordings for the fans. Crown's preshow does not include unlicensed content, so we should get it. If the Cadet's or Cavies preshow music wasn't licensed, how can you stream it? It sounds like you're saying the preshows won't be on the CD. Is that true? What about the Blu-Ray? Finally, disclaimers really need to be added to the ordering page. It should be clear that content from the performance was excluded or that there are problems in the source material (eg Phantom), or you're going to have a lot of unhappy customers.
  20. That's a strange name for a piece of music. Who's the composer?
  21. Phew, glad I didn't buy Crown's APD before I read this thread. I'd be upset. I assume the finals preshow will make it onto the CD?
