Not only is modern pop music a relatively untapped source of playable music, this inclusion would directly attract younger audiences to drum corps, which, without a shadow of a doubt, is something the activity needs. In addition, unlike classical pieces of music that has to be chopped up to be formally placed in a show, pop music commonly lasts between three and six minutes; this would provide arrangers with an easier time handling the pieces and leave room for diverse mixing and matching. I, however, still wouldn't support (or imagine) a screamo drum corps show...

From what I witnessed with Teal Sound, I noticed that: A) Teal embraced typical circus themes, such as classical circus motifs, dress in guard, choreography, and shenanigans (such as spinning cymbals on drum sticks and acrobatics in the contra section) B) Musical package was not over-the-top, but contained features for all sections, most notably the passing around of a singular circus melody to different sections of the ensemble C) Visual package was not memorable to me, but I distinctly remember a few holes on field, whether they were formed from illness or absences The show was given a great response by Chambersburg audience; if I recall correctly, portions of the audience gave it a standing-o. Entertaining for sure!

Raiders: surprising sound from the corps - great volume and clarity. Love fourth movement! Teal: Spinning cymbals were unique, got a loud roar from audience. Other than a few stragglers on phrases, well done. Colt: All By Myself drew audience in to close. Solid performance. Crossmen: World drill/visual at beginning was really interesting. Love the volume this corps puts out, quiet ending warmly received. Crown: burned down the house, no doubt, Brass was impeccable as usual; visually, work to be done (though I heard new closer drill is being given out soon!). Cadets: first I heard/saw of th show - excellent brass, and arguably the cleanest visually tonight. Great surprise, as I was a doubter of 12.25. Cannot wait to see what they do next!

Oh my gosh, I didn't even know they were practicing at CV. Totally showing up to that now.

I will be at this show as well!

Louisville Liquor and Beer Emporium

Thank you, Elmo Blatch, for the updates from Louisville. Much appreciated! -
I don't think I'll be seeing Caberet live this year, but I think all this flack being shot the Devil's way is slightly too early... I, for one, won't be delving into this nonsense that is trashing a show before a single note has been performed. Good luck to BD with a Dada-inspired production! I can't wait to hear and see what the organization has in store for audiences this fall.

Best Max Volume Brass Sounds

I will only voice my input on the only decade I've seen live - 2010's thus far = Crown, without a doubt. -
Suitable, I think. And if I keep listening in on these corps, even to a greater extent than last year, I may need an aid myself!

I went to a practice and heard the corps perform the show that evening (in late June of 2010). This was my first exposure to drum corps of any type, so they blew me away as well! When I went to DCI Allentown (my first actual show!), the Crossmen, Blue Devils, and Carolina Crown blew my face off in the drizzle of the night.

Things you are most excited for this season?

Just listened to SCV's line up for this upcoming season, and I am pretty freaking excited for it (especially how they put Whitacre on field. So pumped)! -

Just purchased tickets for DCI East, Night 2. It's going to be a party (let's just wish for a dry night, unlike last year)! -
The OFFICIAL 2012 Prediction Thread
Measton replied to Schickmeister's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Crown, if the visual package is relentless and engaging, might have it's year. However, I am not going to place all of my stock in Crown as I did last year with the Bluecoats (and that was slightly disheartening for me). The Blue Devils are a rational choice for the top spot, though, as with every year preceding this season, the top five or six spots could move in any direction. Spot fluidity and competition, I find, builds tensions and encourages creativity for each show (Cadet's incredible fight scene, Cavalier's upside-down stunts, Crown's truss's and encore - this list is not exhaustive). However, my understanding of corps is solely based on ONE live event and copious amounts of YouTube involvement. I do not claim my list to be a complete truth ;) 1. Blue Devils 2. Cavaliers 3. Crown 4. Cadets 5. Phantom 6. Santa Clara 7. Bluecoats 8. Crusaders 9. Madison 10. Knights 11. Academy 12. Stars -
First show I saw in person was Cavalier's "Mad World." Didn't understand what was going on until I looked up DCI in November and was introduced to Carolina Crown's "A Second Chance." I am pretty sure I have listened to Mad World, Second Chance, Through a Glass Darkly, and Metropolis 100+ times apiece.

.................. Absolutely beautiful video.

I'm a 17 year-old male from Pennsylvania strongly considering doing DCI. I have narrowed down my choices of corps to audition with based on distance, production quality, and how I view the corps as being managed and run. My top two choices are Cavaliers and Crown, with Bluecoats and Cadets in the "dugout." I am a competent (not intending to sound so pretentious, but I am pretty talented) baritone/euphonium player, and I see my playing as competitive enough to land me a spot in these organizations. In addition, my marching band leaves me with a basic background in visual technique. My biggest problem, though, is with my parents, who do not take me completely seriously when I show them videos or talk with them about these corps. My mother and I went to Allentown for the Eastern Classic, so some exposure was made there, but I am getting the vibes that they don't think I will actually go through with marching a corps. I compiled a list of audition dates and prices for them, in the hopes of sitting down with them and discussing the chance for me to simply audition this year. Note, I will not try to convince them that I NEED to march with a corps if I make it, but that going to an audition camp will provide me with valuable experience and knowledge for future auditions. I also know that it would be highly unlikely for me to march upcoming season anyways, seeing as the conflict between DCI pre-season and public school graduation would make ALL of my parents' hairs turn grey. Are there any words of advice anyone has regarding auditioning and that process? The Cavalier's audition in Chicago is my best bet, but that would require planning of flights, packing, etc. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated :)

1) The percussion changes their plumes from red to white in the ballad, as if signaling a change in allegiance (hence, Revolution!) and come back to join with the band. If the whole percussion wasn't wearing the same colour plumes, then that is a whole other story I can't answer. 2) At least since Allentown

What does Deborah Torchia have against the Cavaliers?
Measton replied to grjt's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
That is an excellent point regarding Cavs in the early 2000's and BD as of late. Change is necessary, but the "change" the Cavs seem to be putting in is the same "change" as what they were doing to shake things up back then. -
What does Deborah Torchia have against the Cavaliers?
Measton replied to grjt's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
So the things that are new and exciting are... expected new and exciting things? Thus, anything the Cavies do is, in fact, a contradiction? ;) So, to break this pattern, next year, their show must be "OrdinarY," where they simply break out Appalachian Spring and Variations, with drill that is closer to early 90's rather than late 2000's. Bets for/against? :heavysarcasm:
