  1. They had a trumpet and a mello on the sideline marching their show while they were doing ensemble block this past saturday. Not sure when they will get the green light to be in the show
  2. I think you are right . . . the more I thought about it the more it seemed to be Madison's show. I'll have to dig up my CD. Haven't heard 96 in ages. To actually contribute to this thread: There's a video on youtube at the RCC show from this year where exactly ONE guy yelled "Vanguard" at seemingly a decent moment in the show. Perhaps it will gather steam?
  3. My fondest SCV CD memory is 96's "Spank ME!" . . . . "shut up" EDIT: 18 years ago was awhile . . . thinking it was Madison's show that year
  4. Having grown up down the street from Lassiter and fond memories of hearing Alfred yelling over the long ranger from my driveway, I've been thinking about the story most of the day. Their winter concert is tomorrow night . . . if I didn't live an hour and half in Atlanta traffic from them I'd go just to experience the awkwardness and potential fireworks.
  5. Sounds like Stanford's marching band. High schoolers need instruction. How many classes/rehearsals/sectionals have you been in and had the sections split up to work on parts and only to hear it not get any better after 20 minutes? Clubs get things done just not at the level current band programs do.
  6. Glad to see Madison 95 on there even if the list is . That show was the fan favorite that year and would have won if judging was done by applause.
  7. "I wish Lassiter luck in finding a replacement that every single parent and student approves of. This seems like it will be a difficult task now that there is an article telling every future candidate for the position what kind of treatment they should expect to receive." No doubt about it.
  8. The last statement unfortunately people do get hung up on. Hindsight is always 20/20 but really if I was Ginny I would have stayed away from Cobb County altogether eventhough some of the finest band programs in the state are there. You simply cannot be hired by your spouse (especially in the public sector) and not expect to come under scrutiny warranted or not. There are several other excellent programs in the metro Atlanta area and really the surrounding counties all have the potential to produce great programs besides which ones are already there. The hiring by her husband should be somewhat moot as she's been working as a band director in the county for some time now except that Gary made his decision to hire Ginny as band director at Lassiter on his way out the door. It's really an unfortunate situation all the way around in which every party could have taken steps to prevent this before it got spilled in a newspaper
  9. unfortunate circumstances. The truth will come out . . . one day. It's part David, Chip and Freddy teach in the Atlanta area still and part students at: Just about every school in Cobb County Pretty much every school in Forsyth County Half of the schools in Gwinnett County And about 15-20 schools in the Metro Atlanta area with BOA quality bands There are few other places in the country with the amount of willing students, middle-upper middle class families with disposable income, and amount of quality instructors. Marching band is big time in the Atlanta area . . .
  10. Weird situation there. I actually thought Andre was helping the hornline on the up and up after the cipriani void starting after 2004. I thought the 2009 hornline he was caption head for sounded great . . . not sure what ended up happening with the Academy. When they added Feagin and Gusseck after 2010 I thought they would have been a finalist contender
  11. Dan was there after JW left but I'm sure being a Vanguard alum helped
  12. Post 99 SCV, JW was tour director in a couple of different places . . . Glassmen through 2003, Division 2&3 coordinator from 2004-2007, Tour director at PR from 2007-2009 and then went back to Vanguard through 2012. So you could say he's been around the activity since the glory years of SCV there. I found this as far as an actual reference to the event is concerned: http://web.archive.org/web/20000711075136/www.scorpsboard.com/news/1999/scv_news.html
  13. no kidding . . . it's carolina crown. Where's the bluegrass show at? Someone at crown needs to get the sleepy man banjo boy's agent on the phone . . .
  14. Unless you live in an isolated world, you will see that wherever you go. As a choral teacher do you not have parents/boosters who complain? Opinions are like . . . can't remember the rest
  15. To a limited degree its already been done . . . I think Milton HS? (north Atlanta area) did a show last year that used LED lights in the bells of the brass instruments and on the woodwinds. Probably weren't the first . . . someone on the BOA/WGI circuit?
  16. This is my 2nd hand information so take it with a grain of salt . . . Todd did resign on his own. He wasn't forced out by the board but was evidently burnt out on doing primarily the administrative side of things.
  17. When you understand what DCA is and who participates in DCA it isn't that hard to see why: One of the reasons DCA isn't as highly attended is because of the age of the MM. DCI shows are filled with mostly people in the HS through college range which don't typically have the work obligations that the DCA crowd has (which is partly why the crowd is "older") or the MM's parents. I remember when I was in college going to several shows that were 3-4 hours drive to see my other friends march that particular year when they came through the south. There's no way I could do that now during the week with work not to mention I no longer have friends participating at the DCI level because we have all grown-up/aged-out. The people I know doing DCA are on opposite ends of the spectrum: 1 guy I know is a 11th grader at the school I work at who didn't make Spirit and ended up working a lot of the summer to save for tour next year. The others I know are educators/staff on high school programs who can't afford to be gone the entire summer on a staff with a DCI level corps. So the difference in who is on the field and the age of their friends really (to me anyways) say why DCI is more highly attended, because the fans that go can more easily afford to go time-wise.
  18. Great post BrassClef. I, like many other 15/16 year olds at the time of their first band experience, toyed with the idea of being a band director after hearing the full ensemble and watching how cool it was back home on tape. My HS band director never persuaded me otherwise but told me he wanted a serious conversation with me if I was ever serious about being a band director. Never had that conversation with him because I decided on not doing music education and instead ended up in machining/engineering. I say that to say this: I know now that I probably wouldn't be that great of a director. I absolutely love the experiences I've had and my current HS related position of woodwind caption head of a local HS and visual tech but I experience the BEST parts of education. I only deal with the kids and their playing for 10+hours a week . . . I'm not responsible for scheduling camps, buses, food, homecomings with chorus, dealing the the band parents association, dealing with the school faculty, setting/agreeing to the fiscal year budget, acquiring new instruments, scheduling repairs, and all the other administrative responsibilities a director has on top of teaching our young people. I literally show up before practice, leave after practice, attend games/competitions and work with the rest of the staff in the off-season on what next year's show will be. I literally get the part EVERYONE loves and none of what they don't. Marching band is my escape from work (love my job but its nice to be able to think musically when not in a machine shop) and I'm never burnt out which is really how I would like it to be.
  19. Just by looking at the finals recap: PR 18.8 - Cavies 18 in Brass and to a lesser degree the 18.7 to 18.2 in Music analysis. PR tied Coats achievement score in brass at a 95 . . . And really in a contextual way (I know the 2009 year is off as both Freddy and Michael were working in a medium capacity since at least 2006) using their 2009 figure: Brass: 2009 - 18.4 (6th place, corps scored 9th) 2010 - 18.5 (6th, corps at 6th) 2011 - 18.3 (6th, corps - 6th) 2012 - 19.4 (3rd, corps - 3rd) Obviously the last 2 years are really what's important here but I think it least answers the question if the Martins can help a hornline to perform at or above the rest of the captions in a top 6 corps. The major difference will be replacing Musick with McGrath. I think that comparison leaves little doubt in my mind that the hornline should be in more capable hands. Nothing against joe personally but he is incredibly young to have been a brass caption head for a corps at the level of the Cavaliers and doesn't have near the amount of knowledge of David or Freddy. Again, nothing against joe but I think he aged out in what 2007? Also subjectively speaking the cavies weren't that close in the lot in terms of achievement from my ears at quarters and semis even with PR on jupiters which fail miserably compared to Yamahas.
