  1. Ok, I'll translate. You're correct my writing there was actually unacceptable and not proofread. Let me translate. Studies performed in regards to the "Mozart Effect" have created a large amount of controversy and debate throughout both music educators, scientists, and well meaning parents. Following the results presented across the board the effect has been dubbed inconclusive at best. Figures in the Psychology field have speculated on the possibility that this unexplained effect, tested several times, with varied results is more likely the preparation of the brain to receive auditory information and sounds with a possible increase in retention. As seen in figure 1, (My previous website post.) Science has shown an increase in certain areas of the human brain upon exposure to Mozart in subjects however, this remains inconclusive as well. Consensus in the scientific community see this as a credible question as to what this activity truly occurs and what it means however, many variables may account for inconsistencies in their results. Some in the psychological field note this as prepping the brain to learn, similar to a mental run through as performed by athletes such as Micheal Phelps who does this regularly for habit building purposes. This study although a popular topic with music educators is often misquoted, used for fundraising and enrollment purposes with parent audiences using what they claim to see as an increase in intelligence although the results are quite different. Originally I meant to make a point on the chart. How different would the chart appear to us here if (Horn teacher I didn't aim this at you you can be on offense again call the defenders in.) that if that 5th grader was given a musical goal other than band music they would possibly sit for more than 5 minutes and god help directors excel. Band retains many of the brightest students in their schools. A students fill research jobs, B and C students begin companies because they don't get hired and become very innovative. (See Bill Gates, Miles Davis, and others.) That 5th grader may be an amazing asset to music, and popular music may change entirely and become very artful again IF Music education programs included those "terrible" Hip hop artists, Rock Guitar that is too loud and full of parallel fifths, and jazz that cannot be seen with Roman Numeral analysis done in Bach. Music Education hasn't changed since 1950 causing falling enrollment leading to lower funding thus causing great misunderstanding of studies such as the one presented here. Many institutions inform students of principals such as these fostering a greater than thou sense that alienates pop musicians that have no interest in band or orchestra. They join and become educated in music and see how the entire chart at the top changes. How many times have you seen a "musician" asked to improvise or just jam with us and they say, "I need a part." Yes you can prime your brain like you prime yourself to perform a piece of music or "Get in the Zone" to march finals. Or, prime your legs to sprint by a nice walk around the track to get the blood flowing. See also wine tasting in which you eat a cracker in between wines to prep or "prime" the palette in your mouth for the next taste. Any Questions
  2. Correct acts as a primer much like an appetizer. 12 minute warm up. From http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1281386 An enhancement of spatial-temporal reasoning performance after listening to Mozart's music for 10 minutes has been reported by several, but not all, researchers. Even in the studies with positive results the enhancement is small and lasts about 12 minutes. The effect varies between individuals and depends upon the spatial tasks chosen; general intelligence is not affected. Rather more impressively, there is a beneficial effect on some patients with epilepsy. The results are not specific to Mozart's compositions but the exact musical criteria required have not been completely defined. Epilepsy aside. Brain and Ear warm up. Like an appetizer puts you in the mood for more. " Music primes the brain " ? What pseudo science makes this scientific conclusion ? Some idiot psychologist must have made it up.....(well it is from a govt site. That's bad credibility alone.) Power of suggestion, Placebo effect......our Brains do strange things.
  3. Stabbing a DM was innovative new and exciting.......Program music from a film storied into drum corps is performed at a sub champ cleaniness. Yes, BD did win those captions, and yes the show is a spin off idea wise and concept wise of '08 that got shafted by a very entertaining but much less creative and less difficult deal. This group was tight, moved their butts off in small yet lightning fast drill that's easy to miss if not watched and yes, like people are finally mentioning '08, this year was a game changer and will be admitted let's say 2017 ish when scv, phantom and crown join in on the style like groups have followed BD, cadet, and star models. So no not memorable and great yet but around 2017 people will admit it. 40 sopranos in the opening.........HEY CROWN AND PHANTOM WATCH THIS! BD can do it too!!!!! Play your game. The dude just watches and abides by what he sees. (Yes I was in a top 1-3 Corps, No not necessarily BD or Cadets, yes I have seen most of these shows in question live.) Scoring.......other guys can get better and reach a 99 if they'd like. There is no bias.
  4. I swear......had Regiment, coats, crown, or maybe another had scored a 99.65 this discussion would be opposite and the sheets I think would be deemed appropriate. 14 BD was killer, 02 Rosemont was killer, 94 BD killer, 05 cadets killer, the list goes on. Every year devils dominate there is a million critics that disagree. Maybe a record number of championships (16) and horn titles should be debated next. I'd like to debate the '08 Phantom title. BD got a 19.95 visual score if I'm correct. Their drum line got killed in 5th , but let's say they were not maxed at that 20 in visual 1.........08 would be a devils title. Their marching was in a different league than Regiment. SO, these great scores....get over the system or give BD an 08 ring. That 20.5 or lowering phantom's score due to being less proficient than thought and in comparison to the follow up changes things greatly. (08 Regiment, which as stated awesome entertaining musical) That change would leave BD with one more ring and Phantom one less. Food for thought on a VERY clean moving 08 group. I guess the system doesn't work well when BD sweeps yet again. Personally I'd like to see Scouts sweep but......we will keep hoping. I say we give the judges room, I have a feeling 08 would have ended differently despite the WGI theater show BD would have been laughed at with. (Granted not their style. Not pushing the envelope and not very cerebral. Regiment was good that year.) Great entertaining show but very WGI I guess only a problem with BD. Where were all these arguments then? Yes, I'm that guy. Just give a well approached response..........I'm open to it. If I was a Blue Devil in '15 I would make a point to repeat just to set off DCP again.
  5. Alot of it doesn't come from the movie. Main theme is a bit different. It costs to much to buy those rights as DCI sells a product and BD and DCI most likely didn't want royalty charges out the A**.
  6. I'll revise them to make everyone happy. I figured it out. "No corps left behind act." Gold medals for all and a trophy that says winner. Who needs scores.
  7. Boywonder, corps saved my life. Literally. PM me maybe i'll explain but it was the only thing I had for 7 years of my life in a tight spot. Thank you for the positive post and not bashing the groups that are at the top in some way. Refreshing. Really.....saved my life.
  8. Once again, I have read these forums for years and this year I am posting. BDB put together a finished product that was well done. If someone attempts a product that isn't cleaned and to hard.....the sheets speak for themselves sorry. OC needs to hold their heads high and be proud. EX. 02 Magic. When Capital Regiment lost what was Division 2, I was there and they said, "Magic was far and away better." Nobody really expected a finals finish from them but they were highly complimented. Vanguard Cadets have knocked off several Division 1 groups out of Semis several years with a great product I wish to see them repeat. My question is why are we up in arms because Devils have dominated this last few years in both classes. Is it instruction? I see outright selling the show they have. The members should be proud of themselves in OC, Academy as they have appeared in an activity that is unforgiving to new groups and both have made extraordinary strides. Stop getting down when a BD organization wins. They have a performance quality that sells the show and an attitude of pride for the rest of their lives of "Bleed Blue." Get a show you can achieve and sell it. Even BD in 05 had some of the most difficult drill I've ever seen and the members struggled along with you can't say yowzer in your show. (Lose one place for that alone.) If people are tired of it, hold your head up high and decide you are going to be better than your own corps the year before. Most of it comes from the tradition of the members such as Vanguard Cadets being consistent in their class. They have an identity and tradition. Without identity we're fishing and making hard to sell, sometimes to hard as we all learn as humans in baby steps year to year. Sorry, but BDB deserved where they placed. Why are there no complaints about so many groups other than BD? The members use this as fuel to prove all wrong. So, in short find an identity, grow your corps, and finally....... GET BETTER. Energy wasted whining about others that beat you is not energy towards getting better and stepping back and asking why. No the system isn't rigged, if it was all those years BD was cleaner and lost due to GE they may have at least 2 or 3 more rings I can think of. EX. '96 '99, '08. They channeled that energy into becoming a better Blue Devil corps instead of worrying about who else is doing what and where they placed. Lesson to be learned? I think so. In short, congrats OC, Academy, Mandarins, and scvc. You guys did great the community is proud of you and look into next year with a little extra fire and see what happens. I know SCVC has this approach. Get those SCV members with the same mindset and they too will rise. I remember crown in 17th...... The Concord organization gets determined to prove they are the top, not whine about others. If people disagree so strongly about them work harder and take a step back and take notes. That's how success is done along with tailoring a show their members are capable of. Did we mention the young age of BDB? They have an attitude where a friend sat next to the members of BDB on a bus after finals and they knew the champion years and almost every show design he quizzed them on. Just look at what they are doing, adapt it to your style and use all that time to whine about BD winning to improve your own group or find a way to help them improve. Can't change sheets every year it doesn't go your way. That would be politicians. I don't see near the complaints and questioning when someone else wins. Get over it and improve yourselves for next season. Refer to the other post directly above this one. They are not as direct as me. I solve problems not discuss how I got screwed.
  9. If BD can march and play well in any capacity as you say, then why have they not done it in the past 8 years? That is your quote. Insulting to BD? Yes..because they have done it in the past 8 years. I have read this forum for years and have seen great posts and uninformed ones. I lost the ability to remain silent based on those that are tired of not seeing what they want to see or refuse to see. Yes, I am intense and have short patience for points with no merit. Seems as though most of the world does think they move and play quite well. I'm glad I could help. Not a good idea to call someone on insulting with a post of that nature. I have no issue being "that guy" when nobody else will.
  10. No. We don't feel bad. This thread didn't appear when BD lost to a play in 08, or got jumped in 06, or got jumped on quarters in 04, or any other year someone got jumped in finals. I'm sorry but no. The kids completed their summer and can hold their heads high.
  11. Well buddy. I'll put you in the category that thinks Justin Beiber is innovative. Easy, flashy, loud, and showy. Anyone can pull that off. The rest of us will enjoy Parker, Coltrane, the Vienna Phil, Liquid Tension experiments, Frank Zappa and the Debussy and others. You can keep baby throwing, Bieber, Snooki and One Direction. I think that fits your style. Easy to understand and no effort or thought required. Based on that I'm done. You have run out of even arguable points and only have posts left to try to make it sound good. Loud baby throwing is for big 12 marching band at the bowl games. We will keep our shows you may have to see more than once. Not to mention Gordon Goodwin wrote parts. That's pretty impressive baby throwing material. Any questions? P.S. If average is ok than we all should worry Also, congrats to all the members this year and years past for creating an activity that I myself did for 5 years and it saved my life. You all entertain and always remember to strive to be better than yourself the year before. That philosophy is why the Blue Devils are so successful. They work to beat themselves and the past Blue Devils every year. Not other corps.
  12. Ok, I'll repeat. Did you watch the drill????? They are changing places in a box in the trumpets while jazz running at a high tempo. INTRICACY. Not everyone has to make it a large spread form to move. I'm sure you missed alot due to not understanding detailed drill. They move and rotate a circle and float it at the same time that is stupid difficult to pull off.......Pass through moves everywhere get into the decade of 2010. We are past company fronts and high mark time. Yes, it is not dancing, the members are taught to move gracefully like a dancer not marching clunky and bouncy. Their style is based on dance which is why they are incredibly fluid, controlled, relaxed looking, and smooth. The drill is designed to be compact making it even more precise. If someone misses a spot they get hurt. The days of 4 and 6 step intervals all the time are not there. They did the large shapes you speak of already, innovators change what they do and take a chance. Their show flows incredibly well giving them no need to stop and count off. That's becoming old school. I challenge you to tap the tempo in the faster parts on a met and let me know how fast they go. In the next life I see a Blue Devil in you due to the adamant way you insist they aren't good. I guess next time you can have a trophy too so you feel better. Bottom line, if it looks hard you aren't doing it well. Great quarterbacks make that long throw look easy, great musicians make those incredible fast lines seem easy. Low achievement = looking out of control. According to your evaluation the greats at anything were given "easy" material because it doesn't look hard. The Blue Devils are hauling for a long time with....wait for it......No real halts to catch a breath and count off. I guess a continuous 11 minutes is easy. Or is everyone else so out of control and out of shape they have to halt? I guess next trip I'll make sure you get a trophy too so you won't have to downplay what the other team did as well as grade your papers with blue ink and a smiley face. I'll front you the cash for glasses so you may see the details of their drill that isn't spread over the field because that's been done already. If you don't like it.....get better. The Cadets are good at it, the cavies were, crown did........ Next year I'll make sure they have a good pause so it looks hard enough for you. This year maybe the members were in shape enough they didn't need it. Bad performance looks hard because it isn't controlled. It's stupid that because someone is good people trash them. JUST GET BETTER and you to will have success instead of whining about it do something about it. It's like saying my house is dirty and I hate it but not working to fix it. Next.... Oh yea, I'd like a video of you moving anywhere near that fast once you get those glasses to see the crazy details of their drill. You can reference their 08 show too. Super intricate harmonically and visually like this year.
