  1. In Drum Corps, "The Donald" was often used to speak of Don Angelica. Sometimes of Don Warren, more oftenly called lovingly by Cavaliers as "The Old Man." or when DCI was based in Illinois office, CEO Don Pesceone, more oftenly called "Da Boss." I guess, Tekk, it's one of those "modern era/error" drum corps things again, ha, ha?
  2. That's the way to go Mike! Throw the book at 'im!!! Who said T&P judging with their rulebooks is dead???
  3. Is this from show last summer, he, he?
  4. Very well done presentation, mostly in the words of the MMs, Gino Cipriani, and Michael Terry (hiding behind his stache) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUH8QndIZ3E&feature=share

  7. What the obit doesn't speak of was Jerome's courage to deal with diabetes, loss of limb, and struggles to maintain hope against great odds. Never did he give up on himself or others. His own battles drew him to empathy for others, courage to address some of the societal battles of the cities where he lived, and always with a blunt, genuine, and so often humorous wisdom. He was a man of great faith which led him to dig deeply into every community he touched whether be it his church, The Cadets, senior corps or just drum corps fans spending time before shows tailgating out in the lot. I will always be appreciative of his discussions with me during those years with Garfield and his support along the way in later years. May the Lord Who is Goodness itself now give Jerome the rest and peace that is the blessing for a life marched true. FHNSAB.
  8. here's an interesting audition/first camp comment from one DCI director who included it in the footnotes of his assessment of first camp for 2016; he's not a Western figure. "Only 20% or so of the folks who ask for information and indicate interest actually come to a camp. It’s tough to look into the face of NO!! But as we all have become aware, the only way to get the YES, is to risk the NO. And .. these folks did that !!!! I love it !!!"
  9. the topic discussion has seemed to hit a nerve...and a reality. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/raiders-stadium-limps-along-using-paper-cups-for-repairs/
  10. Angels and Demons was 2011 award winning show. 2012 was the "Christmas show" which may regain popularity in the next two weeks.
  11. While music may excite and draw MMs, show theme or show publicity may turn off as many as it entices. The snip and paste cut-up of the music disappoints MMs too. MMs are quite astute at suspecting when designers or admin seem to be convincing themselves as much as the auditionees and general fan base about how wonderful a show theme will be and the reality of what it is when it is plated for the judges in August. There is some great wisdom and prudence in the silence of Crown, the transparency of Cadets, the approach of others to ascertain licensing first; but there are also consequences to each of these different approaches. I've always wanted to lock the admins, publicity persons, and show designers in a room the night before prelims and make them watch and hear every notice given since last Championships about how great their imagined show would be. Penalty enough when dreams hit reality. But these same folks will have a dozen spins ready to defend themselves, and I'm not talking about rifles and flags twirling in circles.
  12. No matter how much $$$ Tekk offers you to find out early, hold out until he matches your son's tour fees and costs for this summer. Other posters are Screaming the seconds until the big announcement.
  13. This may put a crimp on those show design plans, particularly if the designers and techs want the MMs to practice at home between winter camps: http://abcnews.go.com/US/delta-air-lines-banned-hoverboards/story?id=35699893
  14. Safe travels for all headed to camp (and possibly show announcement) today.
  15. Take it from one who learned: "not always."
  16. To which they might retort: " r-e-a-m is a four letter word, preceded by another one."
  17. And with Garfield's announcement, Inspire office has now found another way to increase income for future seasons. "Thanks" Garf for spilling the (Boston) beans.
  18. It is far from unusual for a recently widowed person in any profession to effect some adjustment of interests, schedule, activities, and pressures after a transition period that gets one through the tough times of grieving and confronting life and death. Marie and her husband Gary, not dead yet two drum corps seasons 12/13/2013, contributed greatly to the DCI judging community. She as an instructor and then as a judge, and one of the youngest then in the activity (and he as a major drill writer and then a judge) have been with DCI since it began in the early 1970's. That's over forty years zipping about the country and Canada adjudicating under pressured travel time commitments and often with far from enough rest and sleep. Congratulations to her for finding a way to maximize her skills, experience, accumulated wisdom, and continuing interests for the betterment of others in her beloved Illinois. While I realize that my comments are quite personal, I have known her, Gary, and her brothers Hank and Frank (both who also judged DCI) since those beginnings. Those who even hint of any duality of conspiracy or breach of conflict interests show their lack of understanding DCI's practices and policies especially since the blow-up in the judging community several decades back when Shirlee Whitcomb did some sessions with a high school band taught by Freddie Martin (now of Cavaliers and again Spirit of Atlanta.) Posters playing the victim card demean both the corps of whom they profess to be fans as well as the Regiment who would not put its reputation or integrity at risk if Marie had not retired (either permanently or for a season or two) from DCI judging. Jay Kennedy, William Chumley, JJ Pepitone and many others have shown us the sabbatical process that DCI judges implement to return to teaching corps again for a season or two so to not lose that instructional aspect and to keep themselves updated on the current experiences of today's marching members. This process makes them better judges when they comment and when those comments are heard in either critique or by the MMs. All the best to Marie and to the Regiment.
  19. Given the Channellettes and other posters complaining already about the not-yet-officially-announced show theme having previously been done by such and such bandos, this is too funny, for real. http://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/stonehenge-rocks-might-have-come-other-monuments-n476406 plus Tekk (cf next post) found this: http://www.cnn.com/2015/12/07/travel/the-stonehenge-ikea-monument/index.html
  20. These facts and figures come from the most recent GH fundraising letter. The increased numbers of MMs would include the 4 alternates I presume. we have our second rehearsal and audition of the 2016 season coming up this weekend in New Jersey. I can assure you, the 154 Cadets who are preparing to hit the road this summer are already excited and working very hard, and I write to you today about a very special opportunity that is completely new this year. For the very first time, YOU can be a seat partner to your very own Cadet - or even to more than one if you like. Yes indeed, in a unique way, YOU CAN BE ON TOUR with us in 2016! Here's how it works. It costs $1.3 million to fund The Cadets each year. Between tuition, performance fees and income from other fundraisers, The Cadets raise about $900,000 annually. That remaining $400,000 comes from merchandise sales, some assistance from music merchandise partners, and most importantly, from YOU, our FRIENDS, FANS and ALUMNI. We don't always meet our fundraising goals, but we have been close over the past few years, and to say that we are grateful, well, that would be a great understatement. In 2015, your generosity provided a second motor-coach for our volunteers, and this year we have a NEW TWIST: We are asking you to sponsor a bus seat for a real member of The 2016 Cadets! Each bus costs $55,000 to operate during the summer tour. That works out to just about $1,000 per seat, or $1,000 per member of the corps. So, with a donation of $1,000, YOU can cover the full cost of one Cadet's transportation on your choice of the Drum Bus, Brass Bus or Guard Bus. Click here to become a Cadet's Seat Partner for Summer 2016.
  21. Oh I'm sure the quarry will be hard at work harvesting everything it can.
  22. only some. Don't give in to characterures as if it is universal truth. Corporal punishment also occurred in public schools bitd.
  23. just a tiny, little bittee, wee technicality? Who pays the licensing on any corps music used? Or is it going to be a movie of interviews, voice-overs, and editorials???.................sans any music by either corps.
