  1. Another one of your long winded posts ?
  2. I guess I'm sorta slow but I read "Brand New" & "opened last August" in the article. So, maybe it's all about not getting the stadium to practice in since the article also stated that they ( kids at the school ) were marking 2 fields for the Cadets.
  3. I would normally agree but when it's a pompous ( sp ? ) ### doing the offending ?
  4. oooooooo you said RAMD, be carefull that " she who would will not be named" will conjure up EBBUB and such............ ( yea, I'm THAT "The other mike" )
  5. QUOTE: The Cadets typically stay at a school in the host city during performances, meaning the "housing" he refers to in Ocean Springs is the new $50 million high school which just opened last August it goes on to say that band kids at the school were marking 2 TWO fields for them. So exactly what is the problem ? I think tar and feathers are the only thing missing.
  6. Ahhhh how soon we forget. If this was the RAMD days and people could really tell you how they feel you might just be in the corner crying like you used to do
  7. So I guess you missed the section about it being a brand new facility opened last August ?
  8. Sometimes I wondering if I'm watching and hearing the same shows as you guys ? I've only seen them on FN but I watched each one twice before making comments. Crown Other than the 3-d rotation, the visual book seems to be nothing but comet streaks side to side Horn book is very percussive AND CLEAN but I don't hear much depth SCV Sure nice to hear a hornline again, love the signatures in the drill but also some stale moments visually Cadets Sound good, look good, but I don't hear any emotion, very flat BD Good Lord, the depth both visually and musically are amazing. No one swings like BD, but, BUT you need 10 dumptrucks to haul the dirt to each show. If finals were in September ?
  9. Foul on the play. "Painting with too wide a brush" For most of my life I have been associated with a small private school in New Orleans. We hosted coaps every year I was asked. One year housing fell through for a New Orleans show ( due to the show sponsor not knowing ####) and even though being a very small school and already housing Cavies, Don Whitley ( sp ? ) asked for help. We didn't bat an eye. We ended up with Cavies, Crossmen, North Star and Spirit. ( that got me 8 "Gold Seats" in B'ham for finals) I have hosted Pioneer ( and even the Thing ), Madison ( at least 5 times), Teal, Cavies, Crossmen, Spirit, North Star and others I can't remember off the top of my head. Sure, our facilities were not great 30 years ago with no a/c and very few showers or restrooms in the gyms, but whenever I got the call, we responded. As years passed we had a/c in one gym and a larger locker room with showers added. A second campus for the elementary school was added 6 blocks away with another gym and showers. By the mid 80's we had by far the best practice field in the area besides college or pro facilities. Corps were given use of our ice machines, water and power as well as use of our facilities FOR FREE, every time. I was always up front and honest about the short comings of our facility when corps would inquire and in many cases they would say uhhh no thanks only to later need us. Madison ( during Scotts tenure ) would call me and ask if this is Mike %$#$% that is the band director at that little school outside of New Orleans.......and make plans at least a month in advance ( both because of our practice field and because of State Trooper friends of mine who marched corps would give them an escort to the Quarter) Sometimes I would be at a show and Moe Latour would find me and ask if I could do something for a corps who's housing fell through. Yep, lets go talk to the director and let him know what we have. I can't tell you how many times I got chewed out for things like a corps sstill sleeping in the hall when summer school started or a huge phone bill all to a certain area of the country. I can't tell you how many times I heard snide remarks from cooking staffs because we didn't have a kitchen available for their use. But no matter what, I always tried to help, afterall, I marched corps and these are my people. There have been several people and several schools in the New Orleans area that have bent over backwards to help as well as host drum corps. I retired due to health problems this past year but when I got an email about housing problems I started to make a few calls, that is, until I saw the FB posting and my 1st thought was "don't touch THAT hornets nest" Most schools have no clue as to what a drum & bugle corps is and most don't care. It's usually the band directors who either have marched or taught corps that make housing work out. Those people are all over the South just like other parts of the country, but to say the South isn't drum corps friendly, I sure hope you're talking about the weather because I can agree on that> Marching corps from 70-75 in corps out of New Orleans is a beast and we were used to the heat and humidity. < Stepping off soapbox and back to the quiet retired life >
  10. So, you've never heard about Hoople ? What a shame
  11. Once upon a time I LOVED them. The Jazz era of BC was what drum corps was ( in my mind ) what entertainment should be. Way back in the time machine I dreamed about BC because of Autumn Leaves and such but now it's like a thought of an old girlfriend that didn't work out. She changed her look, cut her hair and became like everyone else personaility wise and I no longer am enchanted by her smile. Looks count in the beginning but it's personality that will keep me interested and I just can't figure out BC's personality anymore. I'd rather BC of the mid-late 70's over what I see today. But I'm old fashioned that way.
  12. So, in this pipe dreaming world.... ( and this is just being a wize ### ) University of Southern North Dakota at Hoople decides to feature a Spring semester class call "Drum & Bugle Corps" that meets an hour a day and all day Saturday and Sunday. Everyone gets a music scolarship to play at basketball games. All members of the Dakota Dimwits drum & bugle corps are required to take this class every spring where they learn their show for the upcoming season. They get performance credit for the summer semester as well as master classes etc. Ya gonna punish them ?
  13. Well, DCI was NEVER about the kids, even in 72.
  14. corn fields and horn ripples ? I can't wait till the off season
  15. This is a kid I started teaching in pre K, taught him song flute in 2nd grade, started him on trumpet in 3rd grade. He lived 6 houses down the street and by the time he was in high school he knew more about music than I did. He was like an assistant so I taught him about school politics, band politics, how to deal with stupidity. He finally turned 21 and was able to teach him about "drinking" 3 days before he left for move ins. Each year he leaves a finalast patch on my door for me. It's his age out year and in many ways feels like he's my son that I never had. Just wish he had marched SCV He IS that student that only comes around once in a band directors life. So if you're around the Blue DEvils, tell Nathan how proud I am of him !!!!! Sorry for hijacking the thread, but that kid is that special Now I'll go back to FB and ask him again " So Nathan, how does the back of Crowns uniform look ? "
  16. The packages I drop off are usually: ( and I have a kid marching BD and will see him twice ) Wet Wipes Kleenx Gold Bond cotton swabs socks 10- $1 bills for junk machines roll of quarters for wash days socks suction cups hangers new toothbrush & paste roll of stamps box of post cards roll of duct tape Batteries & new cheap ear phones Box of Hubic pies ( but the plant burned down ) A Roast Beef Po-Boy or a muffaletta a botle of Vagisal ( an inside joke from when he washed his head with some) and a letter telling him how proud I am of him and remind him to wear my 1975 finalist patch on the field for finals from time to time I add other things depending what I find walking through a drum drug store.
  17. I marched junior corps when I was 25 I was helping instruct a very small corps and the drum major got violent ill throwing up all afternoon. We discussed our options and some how I was convienced to be drum major for the night.......wait, WHAT ? Well, I was the youngest staff member who had been a drum major and I was a band director. The embarassment of wearing an aussie hat 5 sizes too small ( dumped after the salute ), black socks as shoes a silk blouse 3 times to large and womans streach pants that were 8 inches too short and you can picture it. I will say that while people pointed at me, no one laughed realizing what was going on. The judges I knew could not help themsevels but at least laughed behind their clip boards. Since we were going to be in last place and all the other small corps there understood the problem, no other corps there would file a protest. I just didn't like being announced as Laura Perez as drum major.....full beard and all. And now, you know the rest of the story sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do
